TBL 11×14 – Today in not-scientifically-supported nonsense, Equine-assisted therapy!
Previously on The Biggest Loser Transformed… Blue won another victory, what the hell guys?
Josh of the Broken Rib was sent home at the resulting elimination, which made everyone rather sad.
Today! A mind health session in the countryside with Glenn, and a pony!
Training for Team Orange gets rough as the reality of the competition sets in. Not so much with the roughness for Blue in training.
Later, another team challenge, head to head mode again.
First, Blue Team tell Shannan that Josh has gone home. Shannan asks if he fell on his own sword, but the guys say it’s not so much that, but it probably played a role because he was in so much pain.
Today’s training session has Blue focusing on the “why” of their participation in the show. They’re halfway through the show, Shannan tells us, so it starts to become a grind. They’ve not been at home for a few weeks, they might still have a few weeks to go and the weightloss has slowed down. Shannan wants to keep his contestants fired up and motivated.
Brett says toughness is doing what you’re told you can’t do. Shannan tells us toughness isn’t “crass, aggressive or heartless”, it’s a state of mind.
Matt’s never really thought about what toughness is to him, Shannan says he’s seeing toughness emerge in Matt.
Lynton and Simmo both say toughness is never giving up, Amy says the same but also not giving up. Amy’s tough in the competition but it’s clear she still doesn’t feel like she’ll be tough on the outside. Shannan says she’s found solace in the work inside but it’s a while until she’ll be ready to face the outside.
Team Orange is doing it tough in training, nobody wanted to vote for Josh. Libby says he was their biggest loser, but the team knew he was in a lot of pain.
Libby says they’ve lost a few challenges in a row now and they’re the underdogs now. She wants that underdog status to drive them.
Girls, row to 250m! Guys, 300m! Chop chop!
They’re all getting a lot better at the rowing machines now it seems.
Luke’s still got Josh’s elimination on his mind, since he was partly responsible for it, having been the one who broke his rib. Lisa-Faye (not a real name) is having a sook during training, as is Nikki!
Nikki knows she has to keep pushing, she doesn’t want to leave knowing she hasn’t given 100%. They didn’t send someone home to then give up themselves.
Shannan has his team sit down for a chat after training because they’re having trouble seeing the changes since they came in. Particularly Amy.
When did Amy last like what she saw in the mirror? Three years ago. Shannan shows Amy a picture from her first day and she looks fat and very sad. Amy tells us she’d like to burn the photo, even her eyes look sad.
Shannan shows her a mirror, and she can see the changes now, at least in her face. She still can’t see the changes in her body though so she’s not sure she was ready to see the photo.
Simmo’s photos just looks like he’s got a shorter beard. Shannan says he looks ten years younger but he doesn’t really, just a bit skinnier. Shave the beard, then we’ll talk!
Lynton’s lost quite a bit around the neck, Brett too. Brett’s obviously really happy with his new look.
Matt thinks his picture has been distorted or something, but Shannan assures him it’s not. He looks younger and slimmer, everyone says.
Meanwhile Orange is still having to train! Poor Orange!
They’re pushing their heart rates to 85% of their maximum so they’ll keep burning calories for hours afterwards, Libby says. Luke’s still upset, still feels like he’s responsible for Josh’s injury. It keeps going over and over in his head, distracting him, and we have to keep hearing about it. Get on with it!
At the end of the session Libby says Luke is “getting cranky with it” and as if to demonstrate Luke throws the pole thing aside with an “ARGH!” Nikki, who wasn’t looking, nearly jumps out of her skin.
After an ad break (Vanilla Pepsi Max? WHY?) Luke insists he’s fine. He needs to deal with it though, Libby says. He’s frustrated with himself and it’s probably limiting him. What gets him through the sessions? The end of the line, getting to the finish. And he’s trying to keep Josh in his mind to keep pushing him.
Now the contestants are off in “the middle of nowhere” to meet Glenn Mackintosh in a field somewhere. Lots of horsies around and they’re wondering if they get to ride one. Most of them probably shouldn’t be getting atop an animal just yet…
Glenn knows they’re working hard in the house so he’s got them outside for the day. To get what they want from the competition they need to focus on more than just their weight. They all have their own reasons for being there, from improving self esteem, to finding love.
Simmo, where does your mind go when it wants to beat you up? Simmo thinks over the last couple of years, where he’s pushed away everyone who loves or cares about him. When his Mum passed away he lost the plot, quit his job, shut everyone out, was very lonely and depressed. He thinks even with an ideal body he wouldn’t have the relationships in his life he needs. Glenn thinks he needs to address where these feelings came from if he’s going to make progress.
Amy doesn’t talk about her emotions because it brings them all to the front. Everyone’s there to support her, Glenn assures her. Amy’s worried nobody will love her for herself. Her ex-partner was cheating on her with one of her best friends, so she lost them both and didn’t want to talk about it with anyone. She thought if they didn’t love her then what’s the point of making effort. Glenn says there’s a group of people with her now that know her for who she really is and they still care for her. Luke says she’s a beautiful person who cares about everyone. Nikki says she’s a weirdo, but she loves her. Aww!
Glenn says they’ve had a good chat, but they’re not there just to chat. They’re there for an “equine assisted therapy”, the facilitator for which is named Jackie. “The horses are your teachers, your healers, and your role models.”
I see we’re not done with the woo-woo nonsense just yet!
Jackie says the horses don’t care about your stories, just your body language and “body energy”. Glenn wants them all to stay in the present, like the horses, instead of worrying about the past. Amy tells us it’ll be tough for her, but it’s part of the transformation.
They’re going to explore the barriers to success, alongside their horse. Simmo tells us he’s skeptical of the therapy side of this, he’s just excited to get to hang out with horses.
Matt’s first to try and lead a horsie through the tiny obstacle course. He’s not having a lot of luck at first but he gives the horse a few hugs and pats and she’s off!
Amy gets a tiny horse! Cute! Amy’s horse is having none of the obstacle course, she’s just knocking over all the barrels. Amy tells us she’s clearly knocking down barriers and doesn’t care what anyone thinks.
Mayyyyyyybe because equine therapy is bullshit? Horses are suuuuuuper dumb, guys. They’re awesome, but so dumb.
Lisa-Faye (not a real name) loves it, of course.
Simmo’s struggling to get the horse to go the right way. The horse can receive his energy, so if he’s feeling hesitant… Simmo says he’s ready to go, not hesitant at all. Then out of nowhere the horse does the course all by itself. Because the therapy thing is nonsense and the horses just know what they’re expected to do…
As they’re saying their goodbyes Simmo is standing in the centre of the field and his horse comes up behind him and gives him a headbump and they have a little moment where Simmo cries. Awwww. What a good horsefriend!
Afterwards Simmo tells Glenn that it reminded him of his Mum. THE HORSE. OKAY.
Time for The Arena! Two treadmills are set up with a screen behind them. It’s another advantage challenge. Each team has a treadmill, first team to 5km wins the challenge. Each contestant must do at least one kilometre. The team that wins the challenge gets a 1kg advantage at the weigh in.
Team Orange only has four contestants, but Simon’s so fit… but their morale is so low after sending Josh home.
Fee confirms Team Orange will have to have someone run two kilometres. Simon tries to volunteer Nikki but the rest of the team says Simon. Simon knows it’ll be a slog, but if that’s what has to happen he’ll do it. He’s sick of losing these challenges.
Simon’s going to run first and last, hoping he gets time to rest in between his runs. Amy’s going to face up to him again because she smashed him last time. This time she doesn’t get an advantage though, last time he had to lift more weight than she was lifting.
Simon gets up to speed a lot quicker than Amy and is also running a bit faster than Amy at first. Amy’s sure he’s going to wreck himself in the first leg to prove he can beat her. Amy’s trying to keep a good, steady pace.
Simon’s first to 500m, Amy’s probably at 350m, then Amy hits 500m just ahead of Simon hitting 750m. Run run run!
As Simon approaches the 1km mark his team is a little worried about how fast he’s running, but he does get a good rest in between!
Facing up next for Orange is Nikki, who’s been working on the treadmill a fair bit. Lynton’s next for Blue but Nikki’s determined not to let Lynton catch her as he did in the sled push.
Lynton manages to close the gap somewhat over his run, though Orange has a 200m lead going into Luke’s leg versus Brett.
Brett’s had bragging rights since the tug of war challenge, Luke says, so he’s got to reclaim some honour now.
Luke swaps for Lisa-Faye (not a real name) who has a knee and ankle injury, so she’s going to go slower than the others, but they do have a good lead still.
Brett gets his sprint on for the last bit of his leg to try and reel the lead back in.
Simmo’s next for Blue. Lynton’s confident Simmo can run Lisa-Faye down, which would leave Matt versus Simon’s second run for the final leg probably? Could be close!
Nikki’s urging Lisa-Faye (not a real name) to push through the pain to keep them in the game. Simmo’s doing it really tough near the end of his leg, but he’s got them back to even at the final challenge.
Matt versus Simon! Simon’s already done 1km, but Matt’s obviously not as fit. Matt’s a very different person to the one who started the competition, Brett says. He knows now what it takes to compete.
Simon’s taken a lead over Matt, but he’s clearly exhausted. Nobody’s sure he can keep up the pace for the entire kilometre. He’s putting his hands on the supports a few times, but he tells us he’ll do this even if it kills him.
Orange manages to win by a narrow margin. Lisa-Faye (not a real name) is VERY EXCITED.
Matt’s proud of making it through his entire kilometre, even though they didn’t win the race.
Orange Team get the 1kg advantage, Blue will have to win the old fashioned way, Fiona tells them.
Fastest person on the Orange Team? Simon, of course. But on his second run!!
Fastest on Blue was Matt, surprisingly!
Go home, train hard, Fee will see you very soon!
Monday afternoon (probably?) is last chance training, a “devastating weigh-in” and another three-way elimination bout in the arena.
Mr Voiceover Man says “three of our favourites” but are there any that aren’t our favourites now? Except Lisa-Faye. Because she has a silly name.
