TBL 11×10 – Head to head tug offs and more!
Previously on The Biggest Loser Orange lost a team challenge and had to send someone home. And for some reason they chose to send Sophia home. Bit weird.
Tonight Blue Team training is “old school”, Josh gets his results from whatever his medical thing is about and later there’s an arena challenge which promises to “boil over” in some way.
But first, Nikki’s waking Lisa-Faye (not a real name) up and it’s rather quiet. No Steph, no Sophia. Only three girls left, eight guys. Crazy!
Simon’s got earplugs in his ears, apparently his snoring wakes him up. Hah!
People like getting an early training session in, or at least the orange team plus Amy from the Blues, before breakfast. Get 45 minutes in nice and early and they’re ready to go for the day.
Josh explains again that he and Luke were mucking around in the kitchen and Josh copped a stray elbow to the ribs. He’s got a dark bruise, but he’s still working out. The results from his x-ray still aren’t back for some reason? It doesn’t take that long to diagnose a broken rib, does it? Quick x-ray, find a crack, tell him to take it easy for a few weeks!
Shannan turns up to the house unexpectedly, went down to the downstairs gym first and it smelled sweaty but nobody was there. Josh’s face is still red, so he’s obviously been working Shannan can tell. Everyone’s up? Good news for Blue, they’re off for off-site training in Hayden Quinn’s gym, The Cube? On the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Ooh!
Blue is mostly excited, except for Matt who is still being a massive fucking wuss about it. He’s been working out in gyms for weeks now. Oh here we go again…
Amy tells him they’re going into the gym together, Simmo says it’ll be just like a normal training session. Exactly!
Libby’s got her team at the on-site gym, she’s really nervous to see who’s gone home. Sophia! Nikki was shocked, Jake says she wanted to lose the weight and get it done but she wasn’t prepared to deal with the rest of the competition. Not sure what he means by that, but okay!
Libby says they’ve got to focus on keeping the remaining six together. She’s a big energy boost for the group. Josh is working out again already… but the medic has finally arrived!
Josh does indeed have a fully fractured rib, the fifth one. It’s “frontal” which means chest muscles are involved. This means he can’t compete in any team challenges until the medics clear him, which given it’s a fracture is likely to be a long time, probably until after they’re all meant to go home.
Josh is worried because this means he won’t be able to contribute to the team in challenges or do much by way of weightloss. So he’s probably doomed!
Meanwhile, Blue are at their off-site session in Hayden’s retro style gym. No high tech equipment, just lots of weights and push-sleds and ropes and stuff.
Amy’s a Northern Beaches girl, so she’s happy to be out there. Hayden says he better see her in the gym right after they’re finished on the show. Hah!
Lynton’s got to get his fitness back up to keep being a pilot instructor. Matt’s still nervous about being in a gym, but Shannan’s sure he can do it since he’s got the team there with him.
They do some basic training with bars and squats at the start, with the final exercise being the Superman Challenge. Dragging weights across the gym, unclip the weight and carry other weights back, shove another sled across the gym, carry a medicine ball back and finish! Brett says it’s good to feel alive again and he gets it done in 58 seconds, likely to be the best one.
Simmo’s time is 1min 12secs, but he’s completely knackered.
Amy’s smashing it out as well, though she’s also doing some of the same weights as the much bigger men. Very impressive! She tells us a women’s strength isn’t less than a man’s strength.
Lynton’s started off strong and manages a good time of 1min1sec.
Can Matt manage to post a good time too? If his face pulling is anything to go by, he certainly can!
And somehow he manages 51 seconds? Hmm, that seems a little suspicious to be honest. Faster than Brett? Hmmmmmmm.
Anyway, his team is impressed with his effort and he’s obviously really happy about it too. “Well done, braaaah!”
Nikki’s having a less than good day emotionally, she’s been feeling like giving up a bit over the last week. She’s lacking confidence and wondering if she should even be there.
After training Libby has a chat with Nikki, saying when she came in it looked like Nikki thought she wasn’t good enough. Libby used to beat up on herself too, so much acne and self-hate. It took a long time to get out of that, but Nikki can too. Nikki motivates people, leads the team and they look to her, even though she’s the smallest. And she’s beautiful and Libby needs her to know that.
Libby’s brought Nikki a rock. Girls love rocks! Libby says the rock is like her, not the worst looking rock, but it’s not the best either. But flip it over and that’s how the rest see her. Oooh, it’s all sparkly and stuff inside. Cooool!
And now time for another session with Glenn Mackintosh. What weird shit will he get up to this time? Remember last time? With the mind-palace pizza?
They’re going through some sports psychology stuff today. Lynton tells us he’s never done any of that before because he’s never done sports before!
The psychological skills are to improve performance, make activities more enjoyable and the skills are transferable to other areas of life.
What are some simple mantras you can say to yourself that will help you get going? Start strong! Inch by inch it’s going to be a cinch! Don’t stop! Okayyyy…
Glenn now wants them to imagine they’re all on bikes and of course they’re imagining spinbikes instead of a real bike. Feel it start to hurt a bit, feel the sweat pour off you, working really hard, legs burning, gasping for air, but your mantra is bigger than the pain.
Brett used to use visualising when he was a boxer, saw himself walking to the ring and stuff. Doesn’t use it as a Dad though.
Now, back to The Arena! They’re there for a team advantage challenge. Head to head competitions, five rounds, first to win three rounds gets whatever the advantage will be. Can’t use the same person each round, each team will have to pick which person will go in each time.
Josh, of course, will have to sit out with his broken rib. Suckers!
First round? A repeat of the rope climb! Steph and Sophia had this in the second round of their elimination challenge and neither of them could actually climb the rope.
First to scale the rope three times and ring the bell three times will win the round for their team. Jake’s keen to have a go at the rope, Simmo from the Blue team steps up as well.
Luke says they only had one option, Jake. He might get up there and flick his hair a bit, sparkle a little, but he’ll get it done.
Jake’s first up to the top to ring the bell, Simmo’s quite a bit behind. Fiona’s making a lot of faces behind them, obviously worried someone’s going to stack it.
For the final bell it’s neck and neck, with Simmo maybe a knot higher? But it’s not to be, Jake manages to win the round putting Orange one round up.
Next up is rowing. Lisa-Faye (not a real name) thinks she’d be better at the rowing than any other challenge, Lynton is basically dumped in it because he won’t be any good at the other rounds either. So it’s two who don’t feel confident against each other.
First to row 500 metres wins the round.
Lisa-Faye (not a real name) is 20 years older than Lynton, which she says is a bit confronting, but they’re both around the same weight and fitness so it should be close.
They’re neck and neck at the 400m mark and it looks like Lynton’s probably going a bit slower… but he manages to just pull out the win. He’s chuffed to beat someone in a head to head challenge.
Lisa-Faye (not a real name) got to 470m, which is only a few strokes behind. Not bad!
Round three, tug of war. Luke is picked for it and Brett for the Blues. With all Brett’s supposed foot problems you’d think that’s an odd choice?
Luke jerks Brett almost off his feet at the start because Fiona didn’t make them take the slack properly. Bad Fee!
Brett gets down low and starts pulling back against Luke, pulling Luke back across the arena and manages to pull out a surprise win. Both men have a hug afterwards though, no hard feelings, good fight!
Blue’s up by a point, 2-1. Next round is a barbell raise beep test. Who’s going to rep each team for this one? Amy’s stepped up for Blue, not surprising because the only other option is Matt.
Orange send in Simon. So Amy’s worried, Simon’s really fit. Simon knows Amy’s stubborn though.
Simon does have to lift slightly more weight than Amy. Nikki tells us everyone knows Simon’s the strongest on their team and she doesn’t think any of the girls could beat him.
The beep test means having to lift the bar 5 times in 30 seconds, then 6 times in 30 seconds. It keeps increasing up to 15 in 30 seconds, meaning a lift per 2 seconds. Don’t think it’ll go that long though?
If Simon loses, Blue wins the challenge and the 1kg weight advantage. If Amy loses it goes to sudden death, Matt vs Nikki. Which would also be a fun competition! But it’s 8.30pm and they’ve gone to an ad break. Don’t expect it to go much longer… unless they’re going to pull some bullshit suspense ending.
After an ad break they’re up to 15 reps. So we’re just skipping heaps then!
Neither Simon nor Amy look bothered yet. Simon’s a little sweaty, Amy’s puffing a little bit.
Amy’s trying to psych him out. Simon says she’s got shorter arms, Amy retorts that his arms should be stronger.
Fiona announces they’re up to their 20th beep. Crazy!
Amy smashes out her 15 to get herself a short rest. Simon has to pause partway through his reps, clearly slowing down. Amy says she decided to start channeling Brett by stepping in closer to Simon to get in his face.
Simon puts his bar down right as the beep for the next round sounds and has to have a breather. Amy’s finished in plenty of time and Simon’s not able to pick it back up in time to get all 15 reps in.
Huge result for Amy, smashed Simon out of the race with ease! Everyone, including the orange team, congratulates Amy on a great effort.
Blue Team now have a 1kg weight advantage at the weigh-in on Monday night. 7.30pm. Be there! Or be here?
Because it’s going to get ugly in the weigh-in room. And then a “shock” elimination in The Arena. So maybe stay tuned?
