TBL 11×08 – Keep those loins moist!

Previously on The Biggest Loser Transformed we said goodbye to Steph after she failed to hold on to a rope for as long as Sophia could hold on to a rope. Eliminations sure have changed.

Tonight the contestants are still too bigly and will have to do some more training. Plus, Hayden Quinn is in the kitchen for some healthy cooking advice, along with making a small budget go a long way. Looks like Shannan and Libby will be in the kitchen this time as well!

Sophia’s feeling guilty about having sent Steph home at the elimination, but everyone’s telling her she deserves to stay as much as Steph did. Sophia was convincing herself she didn’t need to be there as much as Steph did, but she does!

Orange is out on the tennis court playing a bit of basketball, mostly. Sophia’s walking laps of the court. Amy’s the only blue team member present, which everyone thinks is unlikely to impress Shannan. Apparently the blue boys all like a big sleep in.

The boys have finally woken up and are having a chat, at least Simmo, Brett and Lynton are chatting. No clue where Matt’s at?

Simmo’s glad they won the weigh in for once and is hopeful that Steph being sent home will ratttle the orange team a bit. It’s a proper competition now. Simmo actually says that if you don’t give it 100% every day you’re going to lose people.

While he’s still lazing in bed instead of working out. Silly.

There’s only two basketballs to play with so Sophia’s not just going to stand around shooting hoops, she’s dancing around the court instead. Nikki thinks Sophia’s hilarious!

Luke asks Josh what he’d’ve said if one of his mates had asked him to come play basketball. I’m sure that was completely unprompted by production. Very off the cuff.

Josh says he’d’ve thought his friends were mad. Lisa-Faye (not a real name) says that weekends are for catching up with people, doing the food shopping, washing, etc. Jake would’ve given lots of excuses. Simon says he always thought it was too expensive, but you can do some exercise, get your heart rate up with friends just running around shooting hoops.

Time for breakfast? Yes!

After breakfast Libby and Shannan turn up at the posh digs that serve as Camp this year. Did everyone train this morning? Sophia did. Many of the others did. Lynton looks like he just woke up, Shannan says. Lynton says he did a “really, really, really super low impact training session.” Everyone else found it funny, Shannan not so much! When Lynton stands on the scales at the end of the week will he be able to say he’s given 100%? No!

There’s always an excuse for not working out, Shannan says. They’ve got to start making excuses to get some training in. Okay, enough awkward lecturing. Time to learn how to do a bunch of training without equipment. Libby says the turning point for her was realising she didn’t need a bunch of expensive equipment “to get this”, she says, gesturing at her body.

Shannan’s going to show them how much fun it can be to get outside with simple equipment and train. Tennis balls first, bouncing it on the court. If they miss a bounce they have to stop and do a burpee.

Matt’s pretty uncoordinated, but Shannan tells him it’s just a matter of rewiring his brain. Not sure about that Shannan, some people are just bloody unco!

Amy’s a tough woman, she can work out as hard as the boys while still being a girl. Was this in doubt? It’s not like anyone looks at Libby and thinks she’s a boy and she’s the fittest girl there!

Matt’s doing it tough, feeling like he’s going to throw up. Shannan wants him to keep going, his body will look after him and he’s got to learn that.

Lynton’s also finding it hard and Shannan wants them to do another sprint… it does not go well, Lynton takes a tumble! Uhoh!

Shannan’s worried Lynton might’ve injured himself, Lynton’s legs have turned to jelly but he’s determined to keep going. He manages to finish out the session, remains to be seen if he’s done himself a mischief.

Libby’s got her people inside the house today for an indoor workout without much equipment. She wants to show them they can get good workout in regardless. What she’s really doing is ensuring that house is going to PONG!

Simon didn’t lose a lot of weight this week. He’s got to work harder than everyone else because he’s lighter and fitter than many of the others.

They’re doing “pulse squats” which is basically bumping your butt up and down on the couch and jumping on the way up. It’s clearly working for Jake who’s doing his usual grunts and groans.

Sophia’s feeling a bit down still. She crushed Steph’s dream, she tells us she thinks orange should huddle around her. Libby asks her if she feels like an imposter? Yeah, she doesn’t feel like she deserves it. Just get on with it!

Sophia has a clear role at home, Libby tells us. She’s a Mum and a strong, independent woman in her family. So she’s stepping into a leadership role today, acting as the trainer for a bit with Libby’s guidance. She’s having a lot of fun.

Lisa-Faye (not a real name) says the living room is for ice cream and hanging out.

After the workout, they’re dragged into the kitchen for a lesson on affordable healthy cooking. Hayden Quinn’s rocked up to talk to them about food!

Food’s everything to Hayden, it fuels his body and his life. His Mum loved cooking, he was always in there asking questions and learning from her. From then he wanted to learn more, wanted to impress girls. Apparently it works? I don’t see a ring on his finger!

Today’s challenge is for the teams to prepare a healthy meal for a family of five for just $25.

So, a loaf of bread and some sliced meats? DONE.

Jake thinks $25 is a bit of a stretch for five people. Libby tells them they also have some “dry goods” back in the kitchen, so it’s not even $25 really!

Libby’s giving them some tips, like the 80-20 rule. Spend 80% of your time in the outer aisles, the produce aisles, 20% in the rest of the store. Shannan says shop on a Monday because if you shop at the end of the week you’ll stock up for a weekend gorge. Also, don’t shop hungry. Have a list, take emotion out of shopping.

Hayden says to keep it simple, delicious and colourful.

Orange gets to have a chat with Hayden first before they go shopping. Lisa-Faye (not a real name) and Jake are volunteered to be the team chefs because the other boys don’t cook. Lisa-Faye (not a real name) is worried because every time she gets in the kitchen they screw up.

They’re doing chicken with roasted vegetables and a salad. They’re thinking about some corn and Jake suggests a bit of butter on them. DERP. Hayden suggests maybe some extra virgin olive oil instead.

Blue’s discussing their own meal plan without Hayden. Amy and Brett are the cooks for the blues, with Amy as head chef and Brett as her second. Amy wants to do a couscous, but Hayden says it’s a highly processed grain and a brown rice would be a better choice.

To the shops! Coles, of course. Just like Masterchef’s supermarket of choice!

Orange is getting an avocado, because apparently they’re spending 1/10th of their budget on one tiny disgusting item!

Blue seems to be making smarter choices with their vegetable shopping, with big capsicums and onions and sweet potatoes. No avocados! They also decide to skimp on the chicken, getting tenderloins instead of the thigh pieces they were going to get. Much cheaper, apparently.

Cut to Team Orange at the checkout, and they’ve gone over budget. Big surprise there! They decide to change the chicken, of all things. How far were they over? Because they only got a bit over $9 worth of chicken!

Blue Team, on the other hand, came in at $24.85 on their first attempt. Well done!

Orange is back at the butcher section, asking for 500g of breast chicken. Shame about the other chicken they got packaged up!

Back at the register again, it looks like they’ll be over again… but they manage to come in at $24.98 after dropping out the red capsicum, which was apparently $3.30? But you can eat practically all of that, where you have to peel and remove the stone from an avocado. Sophia suggested the avocado go away because the red capsicum is a better colour. Oh dear!

Blue’s first back to the big kitchen and they were 15c under budget, which impressed the trainers and Hayden.

Hayden has a look at the cut of chicken they’ve got, apparently the thigh has more iron in it. They’ll have to trim some of the gristle and fat and marinade it.

Amy’s going to work on a pear, walnut and rocket salad, plus a tomato, onion and balsamic salad, plus a chargrilled vegetable and rice salad.

Blue’s started prep work before Orange even get back. Oops!

Orange is cooking a lemon, herb and caper chicken, plus a vegetable quinoa salad, paprika corn, a garden salad and some roasted vegetables.

Not sure how either menu equates to a practical dinner for a family of five…

Jake’s a bit nervous about being in a cooking challenge. Sweating up a storm!

We look over at Brett and he’s throwing some bits of chicken into the bin, much to Hayden’s horror. It’s gristle and fat that he’s trimmed off the tenderloins but apparently that’s wasteful? He cut a bit too much of the actual chicken off, which is bad. But realistically you could have just cooked it without trimming it. Won’t hurt you, swear!

Jake’s done a bit of a poor job with the veggies. Chunky zucchini and he’s put about twice as much in one tray as he should’ve. Hayden’s onto it though, spread it out over two trays, make sure they’re not all touching each other or they’ll just get sweaty.

Blue’s got to keep an eye on their tenderloins while they’re cooking to ensure they don’t dry out. They’ve got a nice coating of some kind of sauce on them though, so it should taste nice regardless.

Hayden tells us adding lemon or lime to food slows down the release of carbohydrates into your body, but don’t use the pith because it tastes bitter. Did Orange use the pith? Yes, yes they did.

He gives them another tip though, fried capers maybe? Make it look pretty? They’re a bit salty apparently, nice.

Jake would normally put some butter on his corn to get salt or whatever to stick but he’s struggling this time. Hayden suggests maybe not using too much of the paprika he’s planning on using but Jake’s planning on ignoring him. Drown it in paprika!

Blue is also using the smoked paprika on their chicken, along with some chilli flakes, oregano and lemon. They’re planning on grilling it, but Hayden’s worried about overcooking it. Keep the loins moist!

Jake’s gone ahead with smashing his corn into his bowl of paprika, much to everyone else’s horror. Even Sophia knows you just sprinkle a little bit on. Now the corn has orange sludge all over it. Tasty!

30 seconds left! Get food on plates! Brett’s worried their chicken isn’t cooked. Undercooked chicken would be an elimination in the old days of Masterchef, nowadays you can undercook everything and still win!

Time to serve up the meals to Libby, Shannan and Hayden. Brett says their meal is restaurant or cafe quality. He’s really happy with their efforts today as usually, at home, he takes the easy options of BBQ and so on.

Hayden says $25 and some pantry staples and look what they’ve come up with. $24.85, Amy reminds him. Hah!

Everyone’s tucking into the chicken so it looks like it’s been cooked well enough or Hayden probably wouldn’t’ve let them eat it.

Shannan asks what the hardest bit was and Brett says having to do the chicken in an orange colour. Everyone has a good chuckle at that. Hayden says the chicken is great, the rice salad is really good too. The tomato salad needed some kind of herbs with it.

Orange Team’s turn, they’re pretty happy with their efforts too. It’s healthy and tasty, but it does look a little bland. Lots of orange, carrots, sweet potato.

They’ve got little parcels of chicken to tuck into, which is quite zesty and lemony. The zucchini might be a bit overcooked, Jake thinks.

No oil or butter on the corn, Shannan asks? Nope, just paprika. It’s just the right amount, now that they managed to salvage it from the sludge.

So, who won? First, an assessment of how they went.

Orange’s garden salad was good, the corn was cooked beautifully, the sprinkling of paprika was nice. They fell down on the chicken and zucchini. Too much lemon on the chicken and the zucchini was ruined. Hayden loves zucchini so he was really sad it was no good.

Blue’s tomato salad needed some herbs, but the chicken was wonderful and he’d happily have that on his table every night. So for that reason, they’ve won the challenge!

Blue’s won something else! It’s a miracle!

Shannan says the three parents who were cooking today now have a much better idea of what they can do back at home to live a healthier life. And he’s particularly chuffed his team has won the advantage for the physical challenge tomorrow night.

“Winner winner chicken dinner!”

Tomorrow night… Glenworth Valley? Obstacle course! Pigs in mud! Swimming through lakes, jumping over logs, putting logs in holes and generally doing a lot of very physically demanding tasks.

And they won’t want to come last as the losing team will face elimination. They’re really ripping through those this year, huh?
