TBL 11×07 – In an orange shirt Josh looks like a sweet potato

Previously on The Biggest Loser the Blue Team won a challenge thing! Mostly thanks to the athleticism of Brett.

Tonight, the guy who wants to be a cop, Josh, is too lazy to stick it out in training and so he threatens to walk. Libby points out it’s basically a death sentence but I guess he misses his family? They’ll miss you more when you’re dead, mate!

Also, the second weigh-in of the season is upon us.

Josh thinks he’s maybe doing it harder than the other contestants, he’s questioning if he wants to still be there. Pretty sure some of the others have families they’d like to get back to as well!

Lisa-Faye (not a real name!) is organising breakfasts. Steph’s been struggling with the food in the house because she’s a vegetarian. So to get her protein she’s been eating a lot of eggs. Hope nobody points out eggs are not a vegetarian dish!

She has them fried this morning because she’s been eating so many eggs hard boiled. It seems to help a bit.

Nikki’s nervous for weigh-in because Blue has a 2kg advantage and they get to sit someone out of the totals. Nikki’s also looking very pale and drawn at breakfast, though she looks better when talking to the camera later. Maybe they got some makeup on her then?

Orange is hoping their advantage of having exclusive use of the gym for the week will help them, plus they work together better and they’re more strict on training and diet than Blue.

Shannan’s hoping his team has brought the same intensity they had after winning the challenge yesterday. 2kg advantage is big, Shannan knows some weigh-ins come down to hundreds of grams. But what’s their strategy going into weigh-in? Lose the weight, Shannan is very pleased by that reply. They want to go in like they have no advantage and do it on their own merits.

Amy loves training, she gets to shut everything out and work hard. Brett’s also emerging as the leader of the team, keeping everyone motivated in training. And he’s got to lead by example if he wants to keep the momentum up.

Apparently Brett struggles with squats. He was born with his feet in reverse and they had to break all the bones in his feet and move them around. And despite that, he won’t a squat challenge! Shannan’s doubly impressed by Brett’s triumph after hearing that. He’s seeing the toughness and determination and Brett at last.

It’s last chance training time, so everyone’s got to be smashing it out. Shannan’s hopeful, it’s been a good week for them and they’ve worked out hard in training so they should all be proud of their results this week regardless of whether they go to elimination or not.

Most of Orange is doing okay on turning up to training, except Steph. She’s having a sook about only eating vegetables and eggs. Libby tells us it’s very important Steph actually eats properly so her body doesn’t start storing fat when she does eat more food.

High cardio and high rep strength work for Libby’s team today.

Sophia’s pushing hard as usual, Luke is, Jake’s grunting and groaning as usual. Steph’s got to focus on the things she can control this session.

Josh is getting frustrated, Libby tells us, so she’s going to have a chat with him. He misses home, misses his kids. What does he miss most about them, Libby asks. Josh says she’s not going to get him, Libby says she’s not trying to get him to cry. Put your hands out and put the frustrations about the house into his hands. He says he’s not really that frustrated by anything in the house, he just misses home. He tells us if he’d been in a good state of mind the exercise might have worked, but in his current state of mind not so much.

Libby’s going to keep pushing him. She thinks it’s better for him if he has a blow up with her and they work through it today. Libby’s worried he wants to go home and Josh says if that’s what she wants he’ll walk right now.

After an ad break Josh says he’d basically convinced himself he’d go home right now. He thinks Libby wants him to go home, Libby is mystified, doesn’t understand how he got that from what she was saying. She decides to let him go and cool off for a bit. At the end of the training session Josh doesn’t really want to do the “hands in” cheer but Libby gets him in anyway.

After training Josh comes back into the gym for a chat with Libby. He didn’t want to blow up with her like that, he apologises to her and explains he’d just hit 1km on the treadmill which was good, but also had his family feels hit him at the same time. He’s realised it’s not just the weight it’s the emotional and mental side of things too. Josh is worried he’s going to cry again so Libby gives him a big hug so the cameras can’t see. CAN I HAVE A HUG TOO PLEASE?

Time for the weigh-in! Blue’s still trying to decide between Sophia, Josh and Luke to sit out of the weigh-in. Josh seems a poor choice after his sook in training, but you never know!

Libby’s hoping her team hasn’t let the disadvantages get to them, she wanted them to have a laugh and get on with it.

And a reminder of the new system this year! Bottom three contestants in the losing team will face an elimination challenge in The Arena.

Lynton’s up first for Blue this week.

Lynton Previous Weight: 117.9kg
Current: 115.2kg
Loss: 2.7kg

Not a huge loss, but it’s week two. Week two losses are always a little low after the first week. Lynton’s not happy with the result, but it’s probably fine.

Matt’s up next. He’s hoping his 100% effort this week is better than his 70% last week.

Matt Previous Weight: 111.7kg
Current: 109.5kg
Loss: 2.2kg

Shannan asks what Matt thinks Shannan will be thinking of his lower-by-numbers weightloss this week. Matt pauses a moment and says he thinks Shannan will be happy, because it was 100% effort and Shannan says exactly, it was a good effort and he shouldn’t focus on just the numbers.

Simmo Previous Weight: 125.7kg
Current: 121.6kg
Loss: 4.1kg

Nice result, Simmo! He’s glad to have contributed a good result, he knows the team can’t afford to lose another contestant already.

Amy Previous Weight: 101.6kg
Current: 99.9kg
Loss: 1.7kg

Well done, double digit club! Everyone’s very happy for her too, applause all round. She still feels like she let the team down a little.

Brett Previous Weight: 110.4kg
Current: 108.1kg
Loss: 2.3kg

Blue Team Total: 13kg (+2kg advantage)
Percentage: 2.64%

Simmo: 3.26%
Lynton: 2.29%
Brett: 2.08%
Matt: 1.97%
Amy: 1.67%

Brett, Matt and Amy will face elimination if their team loses. Probably bad news for Amy, going against two men could be tough if Brett or Matt don’t agree to throw it.

So, Simmo, who on Orange Team will be sitting out of the weigh-in?

After a near 5-minute ad break… Simmo announces Josh will be sitting out. Could be a risk! He was a big loser last week, but will he be this week?

Well, he’s up first since his weight won’t count to the team total!

Josh Previous Weight: 138.6kg
Current: 133.7kg
Loss: 4.9kg

Pretty good result, Blue might have chosen wisely!

Nikki Previous Weight: 74.2kg
Current: 72.3kg
Loss: 1.9kg

Not bad! She says to Fiona that she’s always saying she’s there for her daughter, but she’s also there for herself. She was suffering outside all the time, and she’s realised that by being inside the house. She’s not sure other people realise how rough she’s had it.

Luke Previous Weight: 116.6kg
Current: 113.3kg
Loss: 3.3kg

Another good result for Orange!

Lisa-Faye (not a real name!) Previous Weight: 97.2kg
Current: 94.6kg
Loss: 2.6kg

Jake Previous Weight: 116.9kg
Current: 113.5kg
Loss: 3.4kg

Jake’s now got a continuous glucose monitor on his belly along with the insulin pump. It keeps track of his blood glucose at five minute intervals and if his levels are fine the pump will switch off, then when they’re getting back out of whack the pump comes back on, which is huge for him. His wife worries he’ll die in his sleep, which has Fiona a bit teary as well.

Steph Previous Weight: 95.9kg
Current: 93.8kg
Loss: 2.1kg

She’s happy with the number for herself, but worried for her team. She can see some physical changes in herself, but she can also see herself being successful now. She might be able to fit into her wedding dress!

Two left for Orange, 5.3kg still to lose.

Simon Previous Weight: 102.3kg
Current: 100.9kg
Loss: 1.4kg

He said before getting on the scales he’s been putting in the effort all week, every spare minute he’s training, he’s eaten everything he should.

One person left, Sophia, who got good results last week… They’ve left her for last so she must be close to the 3.9kg they need to get?

Sophia Previous Weight: 99.7kg
Current: 98.1kg
Loss: 1.6kg

She’s gobsmacked, she tells us. She feels bad for the team and embarassed.

Orange will finally face an elimination! But which three will face it?

Orange Total Loss: 16.3kg
Percentage: 2.32%

Shannan’s very proud of his team, particularly in light of them having no gym equipment.

Josh: 3.54%
Jake: 2.91%
Luke: 2.83%
Lisa-Faye (not a real name!): 2.67%
Nikki: 2.56%
Steph: 2.19%
Sophia: 1.60%
Simon: 1.37%

Steph, Sophia and Simon will now battle in The Arena to decide who goes home.

This week’s challenge will test the three pillars of fitness: Agility, Strength and Balance.

First round, stand in the centre of six FitLite trainers. They’ll light up in a certain sequence, each contestant will have to race over and hit each one to make the next light up. First one to get through the 50 light sequence will be safe from elimination with the other two having to face off in the second round.

Simon’s pretty agile, Libby says, so he’s flying through it. Simon tells us he’s only focusing on his lights, not the girls, so he has no idea how well they’re doing.

He’s definitely going a lot faster than the girls. Steph and Sophia are both chugging along. Sophia thinks she might be going faster than Simon but I’m pretty sure she’s dreaming! She is a lot shorter though, and the lights are set on the ground.

And yes, Simon does win. Not really surprising to anyone watching. Steph and Sophia will now have to battle it out in the second round.

First stage of the second round is a balance beam, with more of the FitLites placed to the side of it. Stop along the way, deactivate the lights with your feet. If you fall off the beam you go back to the start. At the end, climb a knotted rope and deactivate another light at the top.

Steph wants to stay, though she’s sorry it’ll come at Sophia’s expense if she’s successful. Sophia completely understands though.

Sophia’s “a dancer” so she ought to have good balance for the beam. In theory. She’s also a big girl right now!

Steph has taken an early lead, but she’s also the first to fall off. Sophia follows not long after. Both girls need to slow down a bit and concentrate on not falling off. Restarting is costing them both a lot of time, but Sophia’s managed to stay atop the beam for a whole run. If she can climb the rope, she could win easily. But it’s not something they’ve practiced…

Steph’s encouraged to keep going, not give up. She’s still in with a chance. She’s trying not to look over at Sophia, but she can tell Sophia’s struggling.

Sophia can’t manage to pull herself up the rope, her arms aren’t strong enough and she’s not making good use of her legs. Can Steph pull through?

Maybe! She manages to deactivate the final light, kinda dubiously. Pretty sure she didn’t touch it, but she’s off the end of the beam and onto the rope climb.

Sophia’s huffing and puffing from her attempts at climbing. Steph’s only just starting, but she’s also finding it really hard to climb up. Sophia’s hands are developing blisters from her attempts. Team Orange is trying to shout instructions to use their feet, but neither seems able to get up the rope.

Libby says it’s become obvious neither girl will be able to climb to the top of the rope, so they’ve come up with a sudden death challenge. Both girls will place their feet on the lowest knot of the rope and hang on. First one to fall off is out.

Surely a bit of an advantage for Steph who hasn’t been trying to climb it for as long as Sophia!

Sophia’s struggling early while Steph is trying to get into the zone. Everyone thinks Steph has it in the bag, if Sophia can just hang on… She’s about to let go and Libby calls for her to hang on, it’s her spot in the competition!

Steph can hear Sophia huffing and puffing away and she’s just thinking to herself that Sophia will drop soon… but then Steph’s foot slips off the bottom knot and she’s out. Bad luck, bye bye Steph!

Lots of hugs all round for Steph. She’s got a lot of respect for Libby, both for her knowledge and the way she treats people. Steph’s also really enjoyed meeting all the new people. She’s sure she’ll come back for finale just as hot as she would have been if she’d stayed in the house the whole time. We’ll see!

Simmo now has to hand over the power… to Josh! Josh was this week’s Biggest Loser so he gets The Power. This week, if Orange loses and faces elimination in the team challenge, Josh will have two votes. Which is not really a power Josh wanted!

Tomorrow night, Sophia’s got her groove back, Blue’s getting smashed in training and another food challenge – create a healthy, budget meal, that also tastes good.

So, probably not McDonalds?
