TBL 11×07 – Eat 5,000 calories guilt-free by not giving a fuck!

Previously on The Biggest Loser Team Blue suffered another setback, losing another team challenge and thus having to eliminate another member of their team. This time they chose to send Anna home.

Tonight, Shannan’s got to try and get his team to work together before they’re all eliminated.

Later, The Arena is another team challenge with a 2kg weight advantage at the weigh in to play for. Needless to say, Blue better smash it!

First up, training! Shannan’s disappointed Anna went home, but he’s trying not to focus on it. Amy’s the last girl left, it’s not a boy’s club is it? No, Amy says, she’s been training with the boys over the weekend. It’s fine. Who takes charge in training? Who’s in charge of strategy?

Crickets! Nobody’s in charge. Shannan tells us Libby’s team is always working together, in harmony, playing off each other’s strengths. Shannan tells them their individual efforts yesterday were great but their communication and teamwork let them down. Today’s training session will focus on getting them to work together. So this should be fun!

They’re tasked with moving a variety of heavy things 100m down the way, which seems easy. But only four team members feet can touch the ground at any one time. They’ve got ten minutes to get it done.

They’re all heavy people, but they’ve realised they’ll have to carry at least one person. A minute into the challenge and they haven’t moved a single thing. Brett’s being macho and suggesting he can just carry everything. Shannan says if Brett wants to be the leader he’s going to have to change his approach.

Two minutes in, they’re still at the start line. Shannan tells us the smart thing to do is to lay one person on the torpedo bag, like a big tackling bag, and carry the person and the bag down the other end.

Instead of that, the four boys each carry a thing and set off without Amy. Amy tries to follow but Shannan reminds her it’s only four sets of feet on the ground!

Eventually the boys come back and carry Amy, one limb each. Very awkward, very slow. Shannan’s very unimpressed!

Meanwhile, Team Orange is perky as ever. Libby’s picked a celebrity workout for them today. They’re doing so well she figures they deserve a more fun workout this time. It’s based on Beyonce and Jay Z? Okay!

Nikki’s impressed Libby is making fitness fun.

Libby’s got the girls dancing while the boys run on the treadmill. I guess this is a reference of some kind? I am not cool.

Back in Blueville, they’re still a bloody shambles! Libby can hear Shannan shouting at his team so it’s time for Team Orange to pick up the pace as well. Less dancing, more lunges with hip wiggles.

Sophia, Libby’s Dancing Queen, got into ballroom dancing and other dancing before putting on the weight. She now wants to get a smoking hot body and get back on the dancefloor.

“Practice makes progress!” So sayeth Libby. Not long after Jake has to step out to puke. Libby applauds him on the way back in. Hah!

They can still hear Shannan hollering so Libby gets them to give a big ORANGE shout. Poor Blue!

Simmo’s trying to carry Brett to keep the feet up and Simmo’s had enough of being shouted at by Shannan. He can’t deal with it anymore, he just wants to quit. Shannan tells us the session was designed to break his team but with every breakdown there’s a breakthrough.

They managed to get through two thirds of the laps in ten minutes, they’re still struggling to work together and wasting so much time. How much better could they do with some organisation?

First up, Shannan points out they could have put Amy on the torpedo bag and carry her while they carry the other items. With the nudge from Shannan they complete the first lap in 56 seconds. First time they took seven and a half minutes!

Shannan’s pleased they’re finally working together and it should be a turning point for the team. They’re actually communicating at last!

Nine minutes thirty one seconds to complete the whole course the second time, much better!

Now, time for another session with Glenn Mackintosh. Mind health for the win, etc.

Today they’re going to use the power of the mind to transform their relationship with food. What are some of the foods they struggle with? Sophia’s right in with cheesecake!

Glenn asks who finds they’re generally distracted by other things while eating? e.g. watching TV, talking to other people, working. Apparently people eating high calorie foods while watching telly eat up to 70% more. They’re going to give “mindful eating” a go.

Glenn brings out a bunch of slices of chocolate. That’s Steph’s particular weakness, she will often get through a family block a night for dessert. She long ago gave up on just having a couple of squares of chocolate at a time. She’s been craving chocolate a lot so she’s scared of having any.

But for her long term success she needs to be able to eat these foods in sensible amounts. Lisa-Faye (not a real name!) will often eat an entire pack of Tim Tams while watching a movie.

First, Glenn wants them to look at the chocolate. Then smell it. Then pick it up in their hand. Feel it. Close your eyes, then when you’re ready take a bite of the chocolate. Notice the taste, the texture of the chocolate. Open your eyes, then repeat the whole process. Matt doesn’t, just chows down. Well done.

Steph says she feels quite relieved now, she managed to eat chocolate without devouring the whole thing. Nikki claims she’d be satisfied with just the one piece. Lynton thinks he wouldn’t be mad if Glenn took the chocolate away now. They all seem very excited by some boring chocolate!

Simmo, how much would you like a pizza right now? He admits if you put a pizza in front of him he’d eat the whole thing. Most nights he’ll eat two large ones, it’s simple and easy and tastes good. It’ll be hard for him to go home and not eat the pizza. Food is a comfort, when he’s lonely at home at night.

Glenn’s going to show them a way to say no to food and be happy about it. They’re going to eat 5,000 calories and not put on any weight. Erm, okayyyyyyyy?

5,000 calories completely guilt free. How, by just not giving a shit about it? That’s a pretty easy way!

Glenn pulls out three pizzas. Five thousand calories worth of pizza. Simmo reckons he could smash that in one night.

Glenn’s going to walk them through a mental exercise he calls the Mental Meal, they can visualise having eaten the pizza, without eating the pizza. Poppycock!

Sit back, close your eyes, take a few relaxed, comfortable breaths. Visualise yourself eating pizza. Set the scene in your mind, you can be anywhere you want. Be at home on the couch, on the beach, in a hotel, with a fancy waiter serving you the pizza. Look at the details and the shapes around you, then visualise the pizza itself. It can be any kind of pizza you like, and you can eat it completely guilt free.

Simmo’s pizza is a big one, half meatlovers with extra cheese and half pepperoni and pineapple. Smells of BBQ sauce and meat. Simmo’s excited! Take the pizza in your hand and eat it. Simmo can picture it, he’s eaten so many pizzas.

Brett wants to hurry up and eat his current slice so he can move on to the next slice.

This really doesn’t seem like a healthy attitude towards food. What happened to teaching them there’s healthy alternatives?

Glenn says it could be more pleasurable eating it in the mind than in real life. Simmo says he has no craving for pizza anymore, which seems a little suspicious. The only thing better than pizza is MORE PIZZA!!

Time for another challenge in The Arena. First time ever for an Arena team challenge, winning team will get a 2kg weight advantage at the weigh in. That’s a huge advantage for the second week when numbers typically fall.

Blue’s hoping their cooperative training session earlier will give them an advantage today. Orange team is a combined unit, Blue’s still struggling. Brett’s going to shoulder the physical things, Matt’s going to handle the morale. Lisa-Faye (not a real name!) says that until they start winning challenges it’s just talk.

While the advantage will go to a team, they’ll compete individually. Orange Team has a three person advantage so they have to sit three people out. Today’s a fitness test, so they have to choose now. Nikki has an injured ankle, Lisa-Faye (not a real name!) has an injured knee and Josh has a bad hip, so they’ll sit out today.

The challenge will be over four rounds, each round competitors will be eliminated until the deciding round.

The first round is box jumps! Steph and Sophia both look worried. One minute to complete as many box jumps as you can, whoever completes the fewest jumps will not progress to the next round.

Much jumping, many boxes! Matt falls down near the end, how unusual!

Most box jumps? Simon! 36 in a minute, not bad!

Second, Jake with 29.

Brett’s telling us there’s no sense burning all your energy in the first round. Did he do enough or did slacking off fail Blue again?

Steph managed 23 box jumps… making her SECOND LAST! So, who’s last then?

In last place and not progressing with a mere 17 box jumps… Matt. He doesn’t really seem that disappointed.

Next round, a minute’s worth of shoulder dropping. Pick up a medicine ball onto their shoulder and drop it back down. Jake’s worried because of his bung shoulder, but he is still a big strong dude.

Two go out this round, but the winner is announced first. 33 shoulder drops for… Simon! He’s won two of two so far, well done!

Both the two losers scored 26 and are both from the same team. Uhoh. Their names are Jake and Luke!

Blue’s in with a chance! A tiny chance, but it’s there!

Four Blues to three Oranges. Brett thinks they’re all doing a great job!

Planks are next round. First three to drop out of the position won’t go to round four.

Right from the start Lynton isn’t holding a proper plank so they have to tell him to straighten out a bit. He does by the tiniest amount, which I guess the judges decide is enough.

Around the minute mark Fiona says Amy and Lynton’s bums need to be in a straight line, but Amy can’t keep going and drops out… Simmo’s out not longer after, leaving just Brett and Lynton for Blue, but Lynton’s struggling.

Orange is still three strong.

Lynton’s moving around a lot, not sure that counts as planking either!

Doesn’t matter though, he’s next out anyway. Leaving Brett to fight it out against Steph, Sophia and Simon in the final round.

Final round is squats, which Sophia is bloody great at. Everyone knows Sophia’s the Queen of Squats.

It’s not a straight count of squats in a minute though. It’s a beep test. Each time a beep sounds you have to rise from a squat and jump, with your feet leaving the ground. The round will continue until everyone from a team has given up or can’t complete the jump.

Four minutes in and Steph’s the first one out for not having her feet leave the ground. Keep squatjumping!

Brett’s got his necklace his daughter made for him, he’s using it for motivation, it never leaves his side.

Fiona reminds everyone how to do a squat because most of them are basically just bent over, not squatting. It has been nearly fifteen minutes though, which is a pretty fair length of time for them to start losing their clean form!

Sophia’s next to quit, she thought she could have won that but the pain was too much for her.

Simon vs Brett. Brett’s looking a bit wobbly, Simon’s sweating a lot but his concentration seems excellent.

Nikki says Simon’s the strongest on their team but Brett’s mind has clicked into competitive mode. Neither of them seems likely to give up. But how long can they even keep going?

They’re now nearly up to half an hour of squatjumping. At least they’ll both have lost a bunch more weight for the weigh in!

Finally, nearly the 40 minute mark, Fiona calls Simon’s legs as being too straight meaning he is out. Brett is ELATED! Brett’s managed to power through and get the team a very much needed advantage. Maybe they can win a weigh in? They do get to sit someone out of the weigh in as well, so if they choose wisely they could smash it.

“Next time”, which at this point looks like Monday night, last chance training and the weigh in and another elimination challenge in The Arena.
Also on Monday night, Josh might walk! He misses his family, boohoohoo. Libby points out that walking will be a death sentence. Can she get through to him or will he be only the second person to voluntarily walk?

Why not tomorrow night for these things? Or Sunday night? Because apparently the ratings are really, really bad. So it’s down to three nights a week, Monday to Wednesday. Keep an eye out for more changes? Or possibly a channel shift to Eleven? Poor Biggest Loser.
