TBL 11×04 – Welcome to Thunderdome! Three fatties enter, two fatties leave!
Previously on The Biggest Loser we were only three episodes into the season and an elimination has already taken place. Poor old Jenny was sent home by Team Blue, mostly because she volunteered, so it wasn’t that sad.
Tonight we’re treated to the first weigh-in of the season. And then the losing team will be facing up to another elimination, but this season it’s different! The three lowest weightlosing contestants will face off in some kind of arena based competition… to the death?
Probably not to the death. The show isn’t that grim.
Don’t forget, we get to vote this year on who ultimately wins the show, based on the best transformation overall. Start saving your pennies, kids!
For now, the very first time having last chance training for the year. Jenny’s gone, Shannan asks what happened. Jenny was worried she might have to leave anyway so she was happy to go home. Matt also volunteered, Shannan asks him if he still wants to be there, and how much does he want to be there? 70%, Matt says. Which isn’t good enough for anyone.
Brett asks if we’d be happy getting 70% of your wages for the week. Dunno, ask a woman?
Matt feels like he’s achieved a lot in his first week, he’s a disciplined person in real life. Shannan asks him how much he weighs again, says 115kg isn’t a healthy, strong, functional body for someone less than 40 years old. He’s got to want to be there and change his head. He feels like maybe Matt dropped his bar because his head’s not in the game, ditto Lynton. 70% sent Jenny home.
Nevermind, Shannan’s got a plan to show them the error of their ways. He’s got them both to hold more weight than they held at the challenge and they’ve got to hold it while the rest of the team gets to work on a high intensity session ahead of getting on the scales.
Shannan tells Matt he’s certainly had a breakthrough and has made progress so far, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg.
The team’s feeling a bit down today so he’s trying to get them to perk up. Shannan asks Amy if she’s had a breakthrough yet and she says no, she’s a slow burner Shannan thinks. She admits she doesn’t like herself.
Amy’s 27 from the Northern Beaches of Sydney, she’s been single for three years and hasn’t been on a date. She wants to be out doing 27 year old things, having fun, maybe meeting a guy.
One of her friends reveals that a few years ago, just before Amy’s birthday, she found out her partner of 7 years had been cheating on her. Amy says that was the trigger for her weight gain.
Shannan tells Amy that if someone cheats on you, it’s not your fault. Amy thinks she could have done things differently and Shannan’s not having a bar of it. Shannan promises they’ll transform her body and mind, and Amy says she actually enjoys training because she can just put up a wall and smash out the session.
Meanwhile Matt and Lynton have been holding their bars for eleven minutes and haven’t given up yet. Keep going!
Libby’s excited for last chance training, has her team chanting it with her. Weirdo!
Bikini babe! Wedding dress goddess! Policeman in training, dancing queen, Lisa-Faye (not a real name) being the best she can be.
Jake’s worried going into last chance training and the weigh in. He knows he’ll have to work harder to burn the carbs he’s taken in. Libby’s managing to push him past the point he’d normally stop. Libby tells us it’s harder for people with diabetes to lose weight because of the need to balance blood sugar and so on, but it can be done.
Libby’s pleased her team is realising it’s about changing their mindset as much as it is the physical work.
Shannan’s boys are still holding their bars, 21 minutes down now. Lynton’s complaining, but they haven’t dropped it yet.
Sarah’s bad voices tell her she’s not good enough, she’s turned into an introvert. She’s had depression and anxiety for years, since her Dad died. He was her best friend. Aww!
Her Dad understood the sensitive little girl. Her and her Dad used to love walking around the dam. They started originally because he knew she tended to put on weight, so they’d go for walks. She’d love to run a marathon in his honour.
She’s now 32 and her Dad died when she was 18. That’s… quite a few years ago. You might have to stop using that as an excuse!
Oh, there’s Shannan saying exactly that! Well done me!
She has to start living her life again, Shannan tells her. Stop listening to the bad voices.
Everyone’s huffing and puffing and the boys are holding their bars up with great determination. Everyone’s much happier with the boys now. Shannan tells them that they could absolutely have done that, and he knew they were up for the challenge. He was disappointed they dropped the bars at the challenge but he doesn’t hold a grudge, they came back from that and he’s proud of them for it.
Blue for life!
And now… weigh-in day! And in a shock twist, everyone’s a bit nervous! Nobody wants to go home!
Fiona’s in an orange-red dress. Traitor!
Fiona’s rattling off the changed conditions for the overall competition this year, like following the final six and the public getting to vote on who wins the grand prize.
The team that loses the weigh-in will have the three lowest percentage contestants go into an arena challenge, with the loser of that challenge being eliminated. Should be interesting to see how the arena works, but we have to sit through a bunch of weighing in first!
Matt thinks he’s had a big turnaround this week but he’s ready to smash the arena if he goes in. Sarah says this is the most confronting thing she’s ever experienced. She’s most scared of being in the croptop and shorts they all weigh in.
Fiona, who has already been through this, confesses it was a hard time for her, too. And now she’s a professionally pretty lady!
No more faffing about, time to weigh in. First up, Team Orange!
Steph, you’re up!
Steph Start Weight: 102.2kg
Current Weight: 95.9kg
Loss: 6.3kg
Wow, great loss for the first week from such a relatively light lady by Loser standards. Already under 100kg! Steph feels more confident that she can actually do this now. Libby’s very happy and excited for her.
Nikki is immune from elimination this week, and she’s next!
Nikki Start Weight: 78.1kg
Current: 74.2kg
Loss: 3.9kg
Huge result from the smallest contestant! She knows she’s the smallest but is happy it’s gone down and she’s pushed hard with her team. And she already looks thinner around the face!
Simon Start Weight: 108.2kg
Current: 102.3kg
Loss: 5.9kg
Not bad!
Lisa-Faye (not a real name) Start Weight: 103.5kg
Current: 97.2kg
Loss: 6.3kg
Another great result for Team Orange!
First potentially sticky one… Jake!
Jake Start Weight: 122kg
Current: 116.9kg
Loss: 5.1kg
Pretty good, given his limitations. Libby says it’s more important for him to be on this journey than some, because it could have huge repercussions on his health. Early onset blindness is a real possibility. Jake wants to be there for his family. Many tears, much sobbing. His grandmother didn’t look after herself and she had a massive stroke, so Jake had to look after her. Then she died of diabetes related complications.
Fiona tells him it’s an incredible start and every week it will get better and better. He’s in the right place making the right decisions.
Sophia Start Weight: 106.3kg
Current: 99.7kg
Loss: 6.6kg
Yikes! That’s huge!
Luke Start Weight: 123.4kg
Current: 116.6kg
Loss: 6.8kg
Very nice!
Strange cut at that point, screen went black and then Fiona came back awkwardly to say the final person to weigh in is Josh. Re-shoot?
Josh Start Weight: 147.7kg
Current: 138.6kg
Loss: 9.1kg
That’s more like the losses we see on the regular show because he’s actually the kind of weight we usually see. He’s very proud and happy with his loss.
Orange Total Weight Loss: 50kg!
Percentage: 5.61%
Good result for first week losses.
Individual percentage time:
Sophia: 6.21%
Josh: 6.16%
Steph: 6.16%
Lisa-Faye (not a real name): 6.09%
Luke: 5.51%
Simon: 5.45%
Nikki: 4.99%
Jake: 4.18%
Nikki, of course, has immunity. Luke thus slips below the line with Simon and Jake. Ouch.
Nikki really loves Luke, they’ve formed a good bond, so it breaks her heart to have pushed him below the line.
Wouldn’t worry too much yet, Blue still have to weigh in! And they have to lose 46.6kg in total. With one fewer contestant.
Brett says he has a tiger on his chest and that tiger used to roar. Maybe there’s some fight in him yet?
Brett Start Weight: 116.8kg
Current: 110.4kg
Loss: 6.4kg
Brett’s happy with that for his first week. Pretty good for a lighter dude, yes!
Simmo Start Weight: 135kg
Current: 125.7kg
Loss: 9.3kg
Really good result. Says he can’t believe it and Shannan laughs with the rest of the team. Simmo’s tried to lose weight before and never managed it. Best he’d ever done was 2kg in a week, with cardio sessions and being strict. Clearly he was doing it wrong!
Amy Start Weight: 106kg
Current: 101.6kg
Loss: 4.4kg
Anna Start Weight: 117.2kg
Current: 111.3kg
Loss: 5.9kg
Sarah Start Weight: 114.5kg
Current: 109.3kg
Loss: 5.2kg
Good results from the girls. Sarah says it’s a relief, she doesn’t feel like she’s lost any weight yet. Shannan says she can love herself a bit more after this week, she’s got validation that she’s working hard.
Two contestants to go, 15.4kg left. Lynton and Matt, though. 7.5kg each, Shannan says it’s tight but doable. It would be if it wasn’t the two slackers of the team…
Matt Start Weight: 115.3kg
Current: 111.7kg
Loss: 3.6kg
That’s… Half what they needed. Matt’s proud of his result, he’s never lost that in a week before. Shannan looks PISSED. Uhoh.
Shannan doesn’t believe him, calls bullshit on him. That’s the result of giving 70% in training. Time for some tough love!
Physically his body can do it, his mind isn’t in it. His 70% result is going to impact 7 other people. Matt says he still feels proud of what he’s achieved this week, with the kayaking challenge and getting into a gym. Shannan agrees he’s come a long way, even when he came last in the kayak challenge Shannan applauded him. And he had a shift in last chance training. But that’s not a number to be proud of, Shannan’s not proud of him.
Lot of nervous shifting from the other contestants. Get used to it, it gets more awkward from here kids!
Lynton needs over 11kg and Shannan’s seen big numbers before… but let’s be real, Shannan. Lynton’s whined about his arms all week, he’s not going to get 11kg.
Lynton Start Weight: 124.2kg
Current: 117.9kg
Loss: 6.3kg
Well, we don’t need to check the overall team result then, do we?
Lynton’s happy to have gotten the result he did, but also a bit disappointed he couldn’t get the 11.8kg they needed.
Blue Total Weight Loss: 41.1kg
Percentage: 4.96%
Simmo: 6.89%
Brett: 5.48%
Lynton: 5.07%
Anna: 5.03%
Sarah: 4.54%
Amy: 4.15%
Matt: 3.12%
Meaning Sarah, Amy and Matt will now do battle in the arena… whatever that might mean!
Amy’s goal item is… a dress. That represents going out in public. Matt’s is a pair of shorts and a towel. He wants to go outside in those. Sarah’s is a running kit, representing her wish to run a marathon. A much more worthy goal than the other two!
The Arena is an actual arena, with a peanut gallery above for the other contestants to watch from.
Today’s challenge is… spin bikes! First round is a spring, do 3km in the fastest possible time. First to 3km is safe. The other two go into the second round.
They’ll each compete one at a time, apparently, I guess to avoid any dicking about with multiple cameras to judge first across the line?
Anyway, Sarah’s up first. She’s looking strong and confident on the bike and knocks it off in… 5:48.34!
That might be… good? We’ll see.
Amy’s next. She looks to be pushing harder than Sarah but that’s not always a good indication, could be a lot of movement for minimal progress.
Lots of encouragement coming down from the onlookers, which is lovely to see. Stupid voting process can go away, more cycling!
5:34.32! Sarah’s definitely facing the second round, but can Matt save himself from joining her?
Brett’s wondering if “Mr 70%” has left them at last. Matt’s really pushing hard and Sarah says it’s the first time she’s seen him really driven.
Matt’s final time… 4:56.19!
That’s a shame, one of the girls will have to go home instead of him. Matt tells Shannan that was definitely 100% and Shannan’s hoping he understands why he’d been so hard on Matt through the week.
Down to Amy and Sarah. Round one was a sprint, round two is a marathon. They’ll need to keep cycling at 50rpm. Every few minutes the resistance on the bike will increase. First to drop below 50rpm gets eliminated. Oof!
Amy needs to be there and as much as she loves Sarah, she’s going to give it everything she’s got, and she hopes Sarah will too. Sarah says they’re roomies, but this is the competition.
Amy’s feeling exhausted early, while Sarah looks quite comfortable. She’s been training on the bike all week, apparently. Could be a huge advantage, along with being taller!
Amy’s family and friends told her to never give up.
Shannan says he’ll be devastated whichever one goes home. Put the resistance up to 30%! They’re both still above 60rpm, so they have a safety net for now. But the longer it goes on the harder it’s going to get.
Fiona gets them to increase the resistance to 50%. Sarah’s finally breaking a sweat. Amy’s struggling a lot, she’s looking like she’s in a bit of pain. Things don’t look good for her, while Sarah looks like she could go for an hour or more.
After another interminable ad break (Masterchef is coming! Already?) Amy’s falling down really close to the 50rpm limit. But so is Sarah, surprisingly. Could be a race to be the slowest?
… and there we go, Sarah’s first to drop to 49rpm. She looked the strongest but was ultimately the one to be eliminated. Crazy!
Sarah says she’s really appreciated all Shannan’s efforts, he scared the hell out of her but she’s started changing her life. She’s going to give the marathon a crack, she’ll be working at home with that as her goal. Shannan’s hoping she’s learned to love herself a bit this week.
Amy’s sad to see Sarah go but she knows Sarah will kill it on the outside. She used to be down on herself but after only a week you can crack jokes with her and get a smile out of her.
Sarah says Jake’s the biggest gentleman she’s met in her life. Big hug. Aww!
Thanks everyone, buh-bye!
And now, the power is back in play. The power will let someone exclude a player from a team challenge, or the weigh in. And the power goes to the Biggest Loser of the week, which was Simmo from the Blue Team. Well done Simmo!
Blue Team will need the power as they’re already two members down. Not a good start to the season, that’s for sure.
Tomorrow night, more training and Sarah Wilson’s there! She’s a bestselling cookery book person. She’s going to tell the contestants that, “Sugar has no off switch in the brain” which is meaningless trash. The brain doesn’t have any switches at all!
