TBL 10×04 – First Competitive Weigh In!
Previously on The Biggest Loser we met our new set of families, welcomed Tiffiny Hall back to the show and the trainers put on a bunch of weight by eating everything their families were eating before coming on the show.
Tonight, the very first competitive weigh in for the series. But first we find out who wins the plane pull and gains a 5kg penalty to dump on another family, something which will surely not cause any drama amongst the teams.
They’re teasing an elimination tonight but it’s not happening until tomorrow. All we’ll find out tonight is which two families will be choosing who to throw under the bus.
As the plane pull stuff starts up again the Pestells are stuck metres from the line. After a bunch more effort and pulling and arguing they get the plane moving again and manage to just pip the Auvales, who finish their pull not long after.
Terry of the Pestells realises they’ll have to pull the plane again yet, he’s a bit less excited but glad the team got it done.
Next semi-final is Jofres v Hailwoods. The Jofres have four men and the Hailwoods have three women. Mish knows this challenge favours her team on paper but she’s seen teams fall apart in such challenges before. The Jofres do get off to a good start and are powering down the runway while the Hailwoods struggle to get the plane to even move.
In the end it’s not even a close race with the Jofres winning by such a large margin the Hailwoods don’t even try to finish their lap. I guess they don’t have the planes all day?
The finals, therefore, are between the Pestells and Jofres. Shannan asks his team for their best effort, he’s hoping they can work together better than they have been so far.
The Jofres, who got their plane started very easily the first time, are struggling mightily to even get it moving in the final. Pestells aren’t making any progress either.
Then both teams get their planes moving around the same time, but the Jofres are much stronger and pulling away from the Pestell’s plane pretty easily. The four Jofre boys cross the line in first place, but the Pestells manage to keep pulling together as a family and get their plane to the finish line as well. A promising start?
Back at Camp Biggest Loser the Jofres are trying to choose who should get the 5kg penalty. They’re not sure whether to dump it on the Pestells, who have three women and the lightest of the men or to give it to the Auvales, who have two men including the largest. Neither team seems keen to get the penalty but the Jofres don’t reveal their choice just yet, obviously.
All the teams are in for last chance training. Michelle’s pleased her team won’t be getting a disadvantage and knows Tiffiny’s team is immune, so it’s down to the other teams to get it done.
Shannan’s trying to teach his team how to walk on the treadmills, which he says is the easiest thing to do in the gym. Mel and Jodie are struggling a lot and after freaking out that she’d fall off, with Shannan insisting she won’t… Mel stacks it. Big surprise! No time to feel sorry for yourself in last chance training, Shannan tells us, she’s got to get back up and get going.
After some more coaching from Shannan the girls finally manage to get through their set distance, but with a bunch of squeaks and squawks thrown in. How many calories do they burn, do you suppose?
Shannan’s thrilled to see the overall effort being put in by his team at training. “You say what you become, you become what you say”, says Shannan. I don’t get it.
Terry’s telling us about the bad habits that have formed in his family and he feels like he’s failed them, both by letting them get overweight but also in setting an example.
Shannan tells Terry, who is feeling a bit queasy, that nobody ever died from an upset stomach. There’s always a first, Shannan! Terry goes outside to barf because he didn’t want to do it inside the gym. He tells Shannan, as he recovers, that he’s very proud of his daughter’s efforts so far. They’ve stuck to their training and diet plans so they should be okay at the weigh in.
Commando Steve says they’re going to train as if they have the 5kg penalty on them, so it won’t matter because they’ll have lost enough either way.
Steve then gives a plug for the new Garmin activity trackers all the contestants are wearing this year. The singlets they’re all wearing this year also have the Garmin logo on them. Expect that to pop up a few more times as the show goes on…
Steve’s hoping Johnee can lose a big number because he’s the biggest contestant this year. If he can’t do big numbers then they’re in trouble.
Moses actually put Rina in for The Biggest Loser. Rina’s weight is worrying him and he’s worried she’ll die early and not be there for their kids. He promises he’ll be there to support her and thinks she’s beautiful anyway.
Rina’s pushing hard on the rowing machine but Steve is trying to get some more out of her. Says the boys and him are there for her. She looks knackered after the final 200m. Moses says they both used to be fit and healthy when they met. Hard to imagine!
We don’t really see the Hailwoods working out much, but I guess since they have immunity and are really unlikely to have gained weight it’s kinda pointless.
Time for the weigh in! Johnee says there’s a kind of aura about the weigh in room, history has been made there. Except it’s a new house this season so… not so much!
As it’s the first competitive weigh in Fiona also announces what the prizemoney will be. $200,000. $100,000 for the individual biggest loser, $100,000 for the biggest losing family. Not bad, great way to motivate people to keep at it, even if they know they can’t win the individual prize.
Time for the Jofres to drop 5kg on the Auvales or Pestells. And they’ve picked based on how hard the teams have been working out, but then gone on to say both teams work equally hard. The Pestells came second in the challenge though, so they’re getting the 5kg penalty. Jodie tells us she feels betrayed and maybe next time the Jofres will get a penalty from her. Unlikely, but we’ll see.
Shannan knows that a 5kg disadvantage is tough as weigh ins on the families version of the show have come down to 200grams before.
But of course the immune family go first, so time to weigh in for the Hailwoods. Sylvia’s first!
Sylvia Previous: 141.7kg
Sylvia Now: 136.2kg
Sylvia Loss: 5.5kg
Sylvia says she used to tell herself she’d do something about it if she hit 120kg and then 125kg… She didn’t feel like she was being a Mum to her kids, she was just putting food in front of them.
Sam Previous: 109.3kg
Sam Now: 105.2kg
Sam Loss: 4.1kg
Kayla Previous: 110.5kg
Kayla Now: 104.7kg
Kayla Loss: 5.8kg
Cliff Previous: 191kg
Cliff Now: 181.6kg
Cliff Loss: 9.4kg
Hailwood Total: 24.8kg
Hailwood Percentage: 4.49%
Probably won’t be in first place but they do have immunity, so…
Cliff’s pleased by his number, says it shows that if you put in the effort you can change. He wants to change because his Dad recently passed away. They weren’t a healthy family. Fiona congratulates him on his loss and he heads back for a hug from Tiff.
Next family, Pestells. First up, Melissa!
Melissa Previous: 155.6kg
Melissa Now: 146kg
Melissa Loss: 9.6kg
Not bad! Shannan calls out that she can smile, she lost nearly 10 kilos! Much laughter and she finally smiles. She wants to get healthier and also find a partner eventually. She’d met someone off the internet and they didn’t stick around because they didn’t like the way she looked. Even internet people have standards? Gosh.
Jodie Previous: 159kg
Jodie Now: 149.2kg
Jodie Loss: 9.8kg
Another good result for the Pestells!
Terry Previous: 116.1kg
Terry Now: 108.6kg
Terry Loss: 7.5kg
Very good loss considering he’s the lightest on the family. He’s still worried though because they have the 5kg penalty hanging over them.
Last up is Ali. She’s quite confident, says she’s been working her arse off in training.
Ali Previous: 130.2kg
Ali Now: 123.2kg
Ali Loss: 7kg
Pestell Total: 33.9kg
Pestell Total after penalty: 28.9kg
Pestell Percentage: 5.15%
Second place so far, beat the Hailwoods at least. Shannan’s hoping they might get to survive.
Next team to weigh in will be the Auvales. They’ll need to lose 32.4kg overall to stay above the Pestells, which won’t guarantee them safety.
Tenealle Previous: 134kg
Tenealle Now: 125.3kg
Tenealle Loss: 8.7kg
Tenealle says she is feeling good, but would have liked 10kg. She guesses she’s put on about 54kg since being with Johnee. Bit scary. Mish is shocked and has some words with Johnee about handing over some of his eating habits. Johnee says he knows he did the damage and he’s trying to help fix it now. Mish tells us she’s not so sure he’s really aware of just what he’s done to her.
To be fair, 80kg for a girl that height isn’t exactly slim either…
Rina Previous: 155.8kg
Rina Now: 145.3kg
Rina Loss: 10.5kg
The first to get over 10kg. The Jofres are getting a bit worried, thinking maybe they should have put the weigh on the Auvales instead. Still gotta do the work!
Rina thanks her family and her trainer and Moses says he’s very proud of her, she hasn’t quit.
Moses Previous: 122kg
Moses Now: 115kg
Moses Loss: 7kg
To get his family to safety Johnee will have to have lost at least 6.2kg. Um, he should do about twice that, I would think.
Johnee Previous: 215.7kg
Johnee Now: 198.3kg
Johnee Loss: 17.4kg
WHOA. Everyone breaks into applause at that result. It’s the biggest individual result in The Biggest Loser Australia history. Johnee knows there’s still 30 years of neglect to work on but he’s set the benchmark now. He gives a bit of a howl, which he does around the house apparently.
Auvale Total: 43.6kg
Auvale Percentage: 6.95%
That’s probably going to be enough, unless the Jofres pull out some equally incredible numbers.
Either way, the Pestells are now definitely facing elimination. Who’re they going to throw under the bus?
The Jofres need 40.4kg to beat the Auvales. 10kg each is certainly doable for four men. Michelle has confidence in her team, but she knows it’s a big ask in the first week.
Rob Previous: 158.6kg
Rob Now: 144.4kg
Rob Loss: 14.2kg
Well, the gauntlet has been thrown! Rob says he and his fiance have been together for over 10 years and engaged for 9. So why aren’t they married, Fiona and some of the other girls asked. He doesn’t feel like he’s at his best right now. He promises that if he gets to 99kg they’re getting married. Go Rob go!
Tony Previous: 130.3kg
Tony Now: 117.2kg
Tony Loss: 13.1kg
Pablo Previous: 158.8kg
Pablo Now: 145.2kg
Pablo Loss: 13.6kg
They only needed 13.1kg to stay safe and thus they’re already not headed to elimination with only three weighed in. Unless Daniel gains weight, of course. Wouldn’t that be exciting?
Daniel Previous: 132kg
Daniel Now: 118.5kg
Daniel Loss: 13.5kg
10.23% weight loss means he’s the Biggest Loser of the week.
Jofre Total: 54.4kg
Jofre Percentage: 9.38%
Absolutely creamed the other teams. Michelle’s very excited and quite pleased that everything they’ve done in the past week has been pretty much perfect.
So now either the Auvales or Pestells will lose a family member. Hailwoods and Jofres will vote on who to send home, but the Auvales and Pestells get to choose who to put up to face the music.
Nasty, so nasty. The Auvales are discussing it and Rina would like to go home for the kids but Moses says she needs to be there. Have to figure either Moses or Tenealle to be the sacrificial lamb, the other two need it too much.
Pestells are hoping Johnee goes up because they think the other teams will vote him out, but it looks like Terry will be their choice. Probably not wise as the team is likely to fall apart? We’ll see…
… tomorrow night! Which two family members will face elimination? Leave your guesses below!
