9×22 – Every breath you take, every step you make, I’ll be watching you
Previously on The Biggest Loser Australia the eliminated contestants all returned after being under the tutelage of Michelle Bridges back in Ararat.
Tonight the contestants will be taking part in “the most hardcore challenge” ever. They’re doing a training course the elite NSW police force units use to hone their skills.
But first some training in the sandpit for Commando Steve and his selected victims. Lots of talk tonight about how the eliminated contestants don’t deserve another chance in the house. But Steve tells us that every day’s a renewable contract for them, put in the hard work or you don’t get to stay, simple as that. If they want to get rid of the returning contestants all they have to do is push them below the yellow line.
Katrina says she thinks everyone’s position is in jeopardy and so if she has to work out all day every day that’s what she’ll do.
Craig’s being pushed hard in the session with Steve. Craig knows his result was well short of what he needed to be doing. Craig was the one Commando Steve told on the scales that if he’s still there this week he’ll wish he’d gone home. During kettlebell lifts Steve asks Craig how many lifts he’s done but Craig can’t remember so Steve tells him he’s back at one then. Craig says he thought it was nine but Steve says he thought he was going to pull a good number on the scales too, he was wrong!
Michelle has her red team in the house for their very first training session with her at the house. Handshakes all round, then she says, “Let the pain begin!”
Michelle tells them it’s not over till it’s over, any of them could still win this thing.
Mish is impressed by Cal’s first session with her. She can tell he’s looking to impress her. Cal tells her he has an axe to grind because he got voted out by some people he didn’t think would vote for him. He knows he won’t be everyone’s favourite choice for coming back.
Mary’s running at 8km/h which Michelle is very pleased by. She was the biggest woman in the show’s history, but she’s got a better outlook now. But how long will it last?
Mish says Mary’s been in a mode of self loathing most of her life, doesn’t believe in herself, doesn’t think she’s worth it. Everyone else deserves better than her, etc. But she needs to stop thinking that way and start believing in herself.
Michelle tries to encourage a greater effort out of Mary on the rowing machine but she’s clearly slowing down. Mish is trying to keep her pumped up though.
Mary gets back on the treadmill again and bumps it up another .5km/h this time, much to Michelle’s delight. She’s hoping Mary can push hard in the next challenge and, whether she wins or loses, the boost will do her good.
Next day, nice and early, they’re driving a long way out of the city for their challenge. Most of them have never been to Sydney, much less been driving 3 hours west of it. Caitlin says she was quite aware of the three hour drive, after initially saying she hadn’t been in Sydney much and been laughed at by Cal and Rodger.
As they’re driving along two police patrol cars pull in behind the convoy of Losermobiles, catch up and then start the sirens and lights. Guess their drivers better pull over!
Craig wonders what Cal has been up to. Cal’s wondering what he’s done too! Katrina’s worried they’re all in trouble. Katrina says they can’t go to jail and Jane asks why not!
They get escorted into the police driver training course, thinking they might get to do some fun driving… then it twigs that the police have to be fit to do their jobs, so maybe it’ll be that instead.
They pull up at some abandoned looking buildings. Jane suggests maybe they’re playing hide and seek!
Hayley’s waiting for them and asks if they enjoyed their police escort? Well now they’re about to do the most hardcore challenge ever attempted on The Biggest Loser.
One of those big beefy reinforced trucks rolls around a corner and out come four policemen in full tactical gear. Guns, gasmasks, helmets, the whole lot.
Hayley tells them they’re at the NSW Police Tactical Operations Unit. The elite police units complete their training there, including learning about resolving hostage situations, anti-terrorist operations and generally dealing with the most dangerous situations.
And so, the challenge! They’re going to be doing a small part of the training activities the real police do. Mary tells us only .3 of the entire police force even gets invited to try out for this unit.
Each team will be two weigh in pass holders and three remaining contestants. Hayley’s picked the teams for them, she says, presumably so nobody gets saddled with both Kevin AND Mary. Or Kevin, Mary AND Craig!
The teams will be Cal and Mary with Craig, Toni and Katrina. The other team therefore being Caitlin and Rodger with Sharon, Jane and Kerry. Kevin actually can’t compete in the challenge today due to an issue with his shoulder and he seems genuinely bummed by that announcement. He tells us he was looking forward to trying it because it sounded awesome.
First team to complete the course will win. And what do they win? A 1kg advantage for their weigh in pass contestants. 0.5kg each, in other words. Huge advantage. HUGE.
Sharon’s very happy to have Rodger on her team because she voted him out in the first place so she really wants to help him get back in.
Toni’s happy to be on Mary’s team because Mary did really well on the bike challenge so she’s hoping her attitude has improved and she’ll do better this time around.
Time to get kitted up and learn what they’re doing.
Their instructor says they’ll be given instructions along the way, but their first objective is to get a supply of jerry cans full of water to some units in the field, to do that they’ll have to ram through the doors in between.
As each team rams their respective door a big fiery explosion goes off nearby, frightening more than one contestant. Bit of swearing!
Time to run to the jerry cans, then up and over a gate with them and down the track some more.
Cal’s a bit worried since the last time he was in a team with Mary was for the Punisher challenge way back at the start, when they ran up the steps at the Opera House. He’s hoping that despite her still considerable weight she can keep pushing today, unlike her effort back then.
Caitlin says the weight of the gear is quite significant and then they’ve got to carry the jerry cans as well. Then they get to a hill which is very steep, one of the steepest Katrina’s ever seen she says.
Cal’s strategy is to get his cans most of the way up, then head down and pick up the can off the person furthest back (Mary! Surprise!) and lug it up the hill for them. Cal takes the can off Mary and heads back up the hill much faster than she can manage. Mary tells The Lord that she hates hills.
Caitlin’s happy when she gets to the top of the hill, says she would have liked a bit of a nanna nap at that point, but that’s not going to happen.
Next activity is lugging some “ammunition” to another unit in the field. It’s actually just empty cartridges of various kinds, weighs about 50kg apparently. The “Orange Team” is on that leg of the course while the “Blue Team” is still waiting on Mary to get to the top of the hill.
Mary’s got to keep out in front during the ammunition carrying as a “point person” while the others try to keep up. Orange is rotating their people and also swapping arms they’re carrying with so they wouldn’t get too tired.
Mary tries to do some of the carrying but she can’t keep the pace the others want to keep so it’s down to the other four. Feel like this has been a little set up for Cal to fail. Putting Mary on the team with the other heaviest contestant seems a recipe for disaster. Cal tries to get her to keep pushing forward, but Mary’s telling us she’s freaking out. Mary’s telling the instructor guy she’s barely enough energy to drag herself around, and this is why they voted her out last time, they thought she was a quitter. Instructor tells her to prove them wrong!
They’re chatting as Mary keeps trudging along, slowly gaining distance on them. The instructor tries to convince her to wait and help them but she’s adamant she can’t, even though she’s shown she absolutely can carry it!
Meanwhile Orange has got to their ammunition drop point and have to clamber over another fence. But then they have to get down on the ground and crawl on ahead. After about five minutes the instructor calls “GAS GAS GAS” and they have to put their gas masks on, then get back to crawling. They all sort of get partway up, which would get them shot, but they don’t have to pass the course, just finish it.
Blue team has caught up to Orange but with Mary already complaining about the crawling bit, says she can’t breathe with the mask on. Mary’s also saying she can’t do the crawl, even if she gets the mask on. But they’re a team and Cal says it’s bullshit, she can do it!
Mary eventually tells them to go on without her. Cal’s yelling through his mask, saying she can’t both have never done it before and know she can’t do it.
The instructor is crouched down in front of Jane telling her to keep her strong hand on the rifle at all times, in case she has to fire it. Then she puts it down pointing at him and he asks why, doesn’t she like him anymore. She says he’s giving her the shits. Hah!
Caitlin says it’s hard enough doing the leopard crawling normally but with the helmet and gasmask and the weight vest to simulate body armour, it was getting too much for her. But the other contestants are there to help them so she’s trying her hardest. The instructor tells her that if she has to cry do it while she’s crawling.
Orange is in the lead still at the end of the crawl, Sharon’s back on point though and they’re heading for the next part of the challenge.
Mary’s still complaining about her gasmask, saying she’s suffering in there. It’s not meant to be easy! The instructor tells her to keep moving forward when she can, little burst, little rest, just keep going.
Katrina says the orange team isn’t too far ahead and so they can still catch up.
Next station is a 70kg body on a medevac stretcher they have to carry through the bush. Mary doesn’t know how she’s going to do her share of the carrying. After one stint when they start preparing for the next swap Mary walks off, insisting she can’t do anymore. She can walk off in a huff but not help carry the body?
Everyone’s trying to encourage Mary to keep going but it’s not working. Toni tells her they’re doing it for her and Mary screams back that she knows they’re doing it for her.
They keep trying to have her do a stretch but she’s getting more and more sweary at them. Don’t think she’s going to do any more shifts…
Orange is doing much better, helping each other and taking over when they can’t do any more. They finally finish their medevac. Next station is a crawl through a short tunnel. Orange has no drama, going straight through. Rodger says the concrete was a bit rough on his knees but he doesn’t stop.
Kerry says Toni gets claustrophobic though so it should be fun when Blue get to the tunnels.
Blue is basically doing it with four people since Mary’s given up on carrying and is scouting ahead.
Orange meanwhile is even further ahead! Next station is wading through some water which is quite cold, apparently.
After the water section it’s on to a building they have to get to the top of, in pitch black conditions it seems since the cameras swap to nightvision. Cool!
Nobody is sure what to expect inside the building and they’re not given directions on how to get to the top, so they’re blundering around inside.
Meanwhile blue is at the tunnel finally! Toni’s horrified. Katrina’s not bothered and is happy to go first. Nobody can go behind Toni, she says, but that’s not going to be a problem since she can’t even get into the tunnel!
I’m not the biggest fan of enclosed spaces but the tunnel’s only 7-8m long and is completely open at both ends.
But with some encouragement from the instructors and her fellow contestants she finally gets through it. And she says that, while she feels a bit mean for saying it, she felt even better when she found out Mary’s still in the tunnel.
Mary’s still complaining. Says it hurts too much. But after a bunch of encouragement she manages to keep going and get through the tunnel. Then they’re off again.
Orange is still blundering around inside the building but they finally find some more stairs up to the roof. Up the stairs, kick the door down and set off the flare.
Meanwhile blue’s just getting through the water obstacle. Cal’s having a ball, despite losing. He topples over in the water and Katrina goes back to help him, but she gets pulled down as well. Much laughter!
So Rodger and Caitlin get the 500 gram advantage each. Woohoo!
Next time on The Biggest Loser it’s time for another weigh in and the final decision on who’s coming back into the competition from the red team. And it looks like the remaining contestants might be facing an elimination too?
Find out Tuesday night! Then Wednesday and Thursday it’s MAKEOVER TIME, woooo!
