9×18 – Pyramid of Pain!

Previously on The Biggest Loser Shannon decided she’d had enough and went home. Then Caitlin was sent home at the elimination, the first black team member to be eliminated.

Tonight Michelle has a special guest trainer with her at Ararat. And back at Camp Biggest Loser we finally move to the singles part of the competition.

Then a “gladiatorial challenge”… oh come on, it’s just exercise not a battle to the death. Or is it, Kev’s not looking so good!

But first the black team is having a quiet sit and chat about who’ll be coming back from elimination. Kerry’s particularly quiet as his wife may be the one to be sent home.

Of course we already know she’s not!

Blue come in and Toni’s following along behind, much to Kerry’s relief.

The next day everyone is summoned back into the weigh in room where Hayley’s waiting for them again. It’s only been a day, can’t be time for another weigh in, right?

Hayley congratulates them all on their progress so far. They’ve eaten well, trained hard and been loyal to their teams. But all that is over, no need to worry about your teammates anymore. No more teams! You’re all playing as individuals.

Katrina’s a bit worried because she’s the only original blue team member left but also because she might have to get trained by the Commando now. Sharon promises to teach her how to bear crawl and Katrina’s going to teach Sharon some boxing.

Jane thinks it’s all a bit scary but it’ll make them step it up. Cal tells us he thinks some people have been hiding behind the teams a bit and now they won’t be able to.

And now it’s time for the individual leaderboards.

In 8th place is Big Kev, unsurprisingly. He arrived late and had only just come off his own series of the show a few months before. He’s lost 12.6kg since arriving though, which is another 6.78%. It’s been interesting to see him since coming back as his attitude is clearly a lot better.

Kev’s lost 81.4kg since starting Biggest Loser, Hayley says. That’s including his previous season, of course. People have left Camp Biggest Loser with total weights around that!

In seventh place is Katrina with 16.8kg and 12.81%. Katrina isn’t too surprised saying she knew she was off to a slower start, but it’s where you end up that matters.

Jane’s in sixth with 17.1kg and 14.05%. Fifth is Sharon, 16.4kg and 14.94%. Sharon tells us people underestimate her, the others better watch out.

Toni’s in fourth with 19.3kg and 15.54%. So that means the other blokes are top three together. But who’s on top?

In third place is Craig with 28.9kg and 15.76%.

First place belongs to… Kerry with 26.2kg and 18.5%. Meaning Cal’s in second place 21.7kg and 16.49%. Quite a bit behind Kerry.

Cal’s happy with second place for now and knows he doesn’t have a whole lot of extra weight to lose to get ahead of Kerry.

Game on, Sharon tells us. No more waking up other people in the morning, no more checking everyone’s eating right.

Hayley then announces they’re bumping up the prizemoney for whoever comes first. They’re going to increase it from $50,000 to $75,000. And the money for Ararat will also go up from $300 per kilo to $500 per kilo. Worth bearing in mind there’s a few less people losing the weight now, too!

Now we’re off with Michelle’s team and they’re training out on a bare patch of dirt. But Michelle’s brought a special guest! Shane Kelly, five time Olympian and Ararat local and four time world champion on the bike. Some of the team already know Shane, it sounds like. Small towns!

Mish is also pleased to see she has a new team member in Caitlin. Caitlin tells us she’s loved being back home but she’s also glad it’s not long till she gets a chance to get back into the house. Sounds like it’ll be a showdown of some kind for the red team to get some members into the house.

Shane’s pet event was the Kilo, which is riding flat out for a kilometre from a standing start. His record was a minute flat, which is very fast indeed!

Mish tells us she’s hoping Shane can bring a “perspective of mindset”… That doesn’t really make sense. What she means is things like picking yourself back up after setbacks. Shane relates when he used to run the races the night before and not be able to sleep. Mary can relate to that, having overthought all the challenges.

So how’d Shane get over it? He just got back to basics. Which Mary says for them means getting your nutrition right and doing your exercise.

Then Rodger and Matt have a race on the spinbikes. First to one kilometre wins. Rodger gets it done in 1.19 and Matt gets 1.29. Not bad for a stationary bike!

Then Michelle drops a bombshell. The red team is going back to the house NEXT WEEK. And Mish is looking forward to setting the cat amongst the pigeons. Evil laugh!

First training session for the housefolk as singles now. They’re offsite in a huge gymnasium set up with heaps of gym gear. And they’re all in black shirts, which bums Shannan out. Commando Steve is thrilled, announcing they’re all in his team now.

They’re at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, Shannan says. It’s the Pyramid of Fitness, today. Starts with medicine balls, then box squats, kettlebell high pull, cross trainer, step up, rower and the treadmill last of all. It’s a knockout competition, each round one person will be knocked out with the last man standing claiming the title of the fittest at Camp Biggest Loser. And they get a shiny medal!

The first station is the medicine ball. Lift it with one hand and hold it over your head. The round ends when the first person drops their ball or lowers it below the level of your head.

Kev’s worried, recalling when he had to hold his arm above his head in a challenge last season and only lasted fifteen seconds. Ahh but Kev, you forget that Shannan badgered you into doing much better back in the gym once the challenge was over! He’s looking quite composed today and tells us he’s aiming to outdo whoever’s weakest.

And he doesn’t have to last too much longer as Kerry can’t hold the weight for very long. He says it’s always been a weakness of his, holding things above his head. First in the comp and first out of today’s challenge, odd.

Round two, box squats. Shannan’s counting out the numbers and everyone has to keep pace. Steve says the pyramid is about testing the contestants physically, but it’s also about getting your mind to push the body.

Toni and Craig are the first to start struggling. Steve thinks it’ll be one of them to go first. But they’re up to 100 squats and everyone’s still going, surprisingly. Shannan’s very proud of them all, considering they used to have trouble getting off their couches.

Toni knows her squats aren’t very good ones, but she’s still getting through them. Sharon’s still looking quite chipper, bouncing up and down quite easily.

Craig’s noticed Toni’s about ready to give up and Kev’s starting to feel it too. He tells us he’s hoping someone else will give up soon. Having seen him in the ads doing the step ups it’s clear he’s not going to give up just yet!

Just watching them and Toni’s not doing them in time with the rest but they keep going and she’s allowed to catch up. Bit shitty if you ask me, keep up or you should be out!

And then Craig hits the bench and thinks he can’t get back up but he gets a chance to get back up. 270 squats they’re up to now and Shannan says their heads have taken control and won’t let them stop now.

And at 301 Toni finally throws in the towel. Steve says she hadn’t exercised for twenty years prior to coming on the show. Toni says she’s sorry she had to stop but Steve rightly points out she just did 301 squats and that’s no small thing.

Shannan’s excited saying it’s one of the most epic battles in his time on the show.

Round three, kettle bell high pulls. They get two minutes to do as many lifts as they can. The one with the least repetitions will get eliminated. Cal’s first cab off the rank and manages 64. And that’s after the 300 squats!

Shannan says his 64 is one lift every two seconds, so good luck to the others trying to beat that.

Craig’s struggling to keep going because his legs are knackered so he has to start using his back, which doesn’t hold out long either. He manages 41 in the end, meaning the others will only have to get to 42 to stay safe.

Jane’s next and manages the 42 quite easily. Kev gets it done too, as does Sharon and Katrina. So Craig’s out.

Five minutes on the cross trainer to blast out as much distance as they can on the level 10 setting. Kev describes it as like trying to walk through concrete, especially hard after being gassed out from the past rounds.

Kev’s giving it absolutely everything and manages 1.03km, narrowly knocking off Katrina.

Next round is the box step up. 50 reps in the shortest time. Longest time gets knocked out. Shannan says that he’s not surprised to see Cal and Jane in the final rounds but seeing Sharon and Kevin still in there is very impressive and shows the pyramid does not discriminate.

Cal does his 50 reps in a minute and fifty-eight seconds. The box is about 50cm in height, so it’s not like a tiny step up and then down, it’s a serious effort each time.

Jane does her 50 in three minutes six seconds.

Sharon’s a bit worried because she’s even shorter than Jane. Shannan says her short legs may have been an advantage in the squats but it’s catching up with her now. In the end Sharon manages her 50 reps in two minutes forty one seconds, she’s quite pleased by that.

Steve asks Kevin if he’s ready and Kevin hesitates before saying yes. Steve reminds him he can use his hands for support to get up on the box. Kev’s never had to step up on a box that big and it’s clearly getting into his head. Shannan’s a bit worried for him.

Shannan wasn’t even sure Kev would manage to do one rep but Kev’s not going to let it beat him. Steve’s got his foot on the box after a couple of reps as Kev nearly topples it getting up on there. Steve’s also offering his hand to help Kev, but Kev’s determined to do it by himself.

Kev makes it to ten but isn’t sure he can complete them all. At twenty two reps he’s already passed Jane’s time, so he’s going to be eliminated, but he’s not going to quit. Shannan and Steve are both urging him on, saying he’s got this, he can do it. Shannan tells us Kev’s effort is phenomenal, he could have just walked away but he wouldn’t.

Kev says if it wasn’t for the trainers there in his ears the whole way he would have given up at ten.

But he comes in at six minutes and thirty three seconds. Which earns a round of applause from all the other contestants. Steve says he’s starting to believe in himself a lot more, approaching things with a can-do attitude.

It’s down to three now. Rowing sprint, one kilometre.

Cal’s in first place with 150m left, Jane has 200m left and Sharon has 170m to go. Pretty close race. Looks like Jane will get eliminated this round, with Cal rowing strongly… and then oops, he’s fallen off his seat. Oh no!

Cal says his body is screaming at him to stop and he has to take a short break, is considering stopping and letting the girls win but he’s too stubborn for that.

In the end it’s Cal and Sharon making it through to the final round. Sharon’s amazed she managed to make it to the final round and I think a lot of other people are surprised she’s up there, too.

Treadmills are starting at 8km/hr and every minute will go up by half a kilometre. Cal gets to start out at a fast walk but the much shorter Sharon has to go at a jog from the start.

Steve’s urging Sharon on but she can’t last long after all the efforts she’s gone through today and having to run on top of that. She’s off in short order but she’s still very proud of herself for making it right to the end, as she should be.

And so Cal’s won. He says it felt good to win though most people knew he was the fittest anyway.

Kerry tells us he doesn’t think Cal would survive an elimination in singles if it came to that. Don’t think anyone likes Cal much, do they?

Tomorrow night they’re going to fry some bacon! I mean they’re doing a firewalk. Cooool. Cal’s not sure he can do it.

And also a Biggest Loser Triathlon. Though it looks to be a triathlon in a nontraditional sense, since there’s big paddle trike things and a balance beam as well as the more traditional running bits.
