9×10 – Treadmills rolling over an open pool… *sings*
Previously on The Biggest Loser there was a hay bale challenge back in Ararat that Blue won under somewhat controversial circumstances.
Back at Camp Biggest Loser The Fridge resulted in Toni gaining immunity and Matt being sent back home to Ararat.
Tonight! Challenge night for the champs. Treadmills hanging over the edge of a pool, keep walking till you fall over and land in the pool. And Big Kev’s going to emerge a bit worse for wear…
But first Hayley arrives at Camp for a chat with the champs. Everyone immediately says uhoh. Hayley says she doesn’t want to be the uhoh lady, she wants to be the yayyyy lady!
Back in Ararat the townsfolk have won Blue an advantage in the challenge. What’s the advantage? Dunno yet, training time first!
Blue arrives in the gym and there’s a rope strung up at Shannan’s shoulder height. He says he’ll explain that later, first it’s time to be happy that “Spanner”, Katrina’s husband, won an advantage. That’s the first step to reclaiming their confidence this week.
Time for a hardcore boxing training session! The rope is for ducking back and forth under while advancing across the gym. It’s about coordination, footwork and moving lightly Shannan tells us. All of which is very hard for his contestants!
They all look pretty awkward and uncomfortable the first couple of times, but as they do it more times they gradually improve. Katrina’s not doing it properly, she’s too short to have to!
Old Kev wouldn’t’ve liked a training session like this, he tells us, but New Kev loves getting stuck in. They’ve got to fight their way back into the competition. Failure is not an option!
Shannan says the less they tell themselves they’re lazy, cumbersome and fat and the more they tell themselves they’re capable of more, the better their weightloss journey will be.
Time for one more surprise for the contestants. Half inch pine boards that Shannan’s going to ask them to punch through. After they write on the board what’s been holding them back, of course.
Big Kev’s up first and busts his “self doubt” board very easily.
Katrina’s board says she won’t let the past determine her future. Cancer plus divorce does not equal weight anymore, Natalie’s says. Not sure what Mary had on hers. Shannon has that she is strong and will have no regrets.
After an ad break we’re in Ararat with Michelle giving us an update on the community. They’re all rising to the challenge and training hard.
And her secret team has doubled in size! She’s now got Matt as well as Rodger. She’s assessing where his head is at now. He says it was hard being at the big house. And it was a surprise to see Michelle in Ararat!
They’re training on a footy field today, tackling crash mats and running back and forth.
Mish thinks Matt may be seeing himself as a bit of an underdog, not being as fit or strong as Rodger, but she’s building up his confidence by getting him to beat his best times at a particular exercise. He’s finding ways to improve his times and push past the pain barrier.
In the end he cuts his time from 35 seconds to 14 seconds. They’re both completely knackered at the end though!
Mish says he just has to chip away at the self doubt and he’ll get there. He needs to put in that sort of effort in every session with her and every workout without her.
Back at Camp and they’re off for the weekly challenge. They arrive at a pool with the treadmills set up on the edge of the pool.
Everyone’s getting a bit worried. Especially when one of the men calls out that he always swims in the nude. Ewwww.
They’re at the YMCA at the University of New South Wales Fitness and Aquatic Centre.
They start on the treadmills at 3km/hr and an incline of 3. Gradually Hayley will call for them to bump up the speed. If you fall or jump off, you’re out!
Last man or woman standing wins. And it’s a challenge they’ll want to win, since the week’s second immunity is up for grabs.
And Blue’s advantage… is also doubled, because it’s double the trouble week!
The first advantage is that Black will have to start 10 minutes before Blue even gets on the treadmills. Advantage number two is they need to even up the teams. Toni already has immunity so she’s out, then Blue choose another Black team member to sit out.
Surely that’ll be Cal. Not sitting him out is silly.
Toni thinks it’ll be Kerry cause he’s always walking on the driveway. Cal thinks maybe Craig because he has a big heart.
But of course Blue has chosen Cal as he’s the strongest on the treadmill. Cal says Shannan should get a new sponsor and dress in yellow. Harharhar, hilarious.
One last thing, Hayley says. Double the prizes today, too. As well as immunity the last man or woman standing will win their team a 2kg advantage at the weigh in.
Much bigger advantage for Blue at the moment!
Natalie tells us she had a stomach bug earlier in the week and she’s still feeling rotten so she doesn’t think she’ll be able to walk on the treadmill for very long.
Sounds like quitter talk to me!
Shannan comes for a chat and she’s not looking well, has a sick bag and all. He asks her where’s the best place for her, she’s a nurse. She knows she should be in bed. So off she goes back to Camp and bed so she can recover and get back to training as soon as possible.
Back on the pool deck everyone’s on the treadmills but only Black has to start walking right away.
Sharon and Jane are trying to trash talk. Sharon tells Kev not to fall over on his first step, that’d be embarassing! Then she asks how his Mum is and he says good. With a Mum like his I doubt he’s missing her much!
Kev’s been working out for hours a day for months now, so Shannan’s quite confident in him. He’s already run at 9.5km/h on the treadmill since returning. Shannan tells him it’s time for him to cement his place.
Apparently it’s a heated pool so Craig’s feeling the heat a bit already. He’s puffing a little.
Sharon’s still chatting to Kev. Kev says he’s exhausted so Sharon tells him to jump off then. Sharon’s marching along and suggests Kev do the same, but Kev says he’s alright. Sharon’s not worried, she’s sure she’ll beat him.
Jane’s going along pretty well, Steve tells us. She’s started acknowledging the things holding her back and she’s looking a lot happier now.
Thirty minutes in and all nine are still standing!
Kerry would love to win and spend another week in the house with Toni. They got married in 1996 and basically haven’t done anything apart from each other in 17 years, so they want to experience this together too.
Craig’s working up quite a sweat, but Mary’s got an even fiercer sweat going and her face is going redder and redder. She tells us she’s not the best on the treadmill, cue footage of her falling over in training, but she’s expecting a lighter landing today.
Shannon tells us that once Mary starts crying she knows it’ll be all over.
And the doubts are setting in, Mary says it’s too far. Her knee’s killing her. Shannan tells us Mary has always been asking for breaks in training, but you can’t have a break on a treadmill.
Time to up the speed to 5!
Mary’s puffing and panting and she says her feet feel like they’re made of lead.
And after an ad break she sort of lamely steps off the back and just about brains herself on the end of the treadmill as she plops into the pool.
One down!
She feels like she’s done her best, but she’s still disappointed she was first out.
No tears, Shannan says as she gets out. She did her best, no drama!
Blue’s now down to three members while Black still has five.
Katrina’s disappointed Mary dropped out, saying she wanted her to try a bit harder. But now she’s more determined to keep going!
One hour! Everyone’s starting to hurt, Steve says. It’s a battle of the mind now.
They’re increasing it to 5.5km/h, not the full 1km boost. Shannan says they’re all checking themselves into the hurt locker.
Kev’s still going! Shannan says he’s a lot mentally tougher and more disciplined than Shannan thought he’d ever be.
Then we see a replay of Big Kev from his first training session and looking at that next to the challenge footage it’s apparent he’s really made a hell of a lot of progress. It’s a little hard to tell sometimes because he’s still so immense.
Caitlin’s still going, working up a sweat, but Steve says it’s good she can still put a smile on her face. Caitlin’s goal is to beat at least Kevin and Mary. One down, one to go then.
But Big Kev is getting dizzy. He can tell his body is willing but he’s starting to wobble off the sides. Shannan tells him to lean back when he goes, he doesn’t want him to go off but he wants him to be safe if he does. So I guess Mary hurt herself with that fall?
Anyway, Caitlin’s happy she beat Kev but she’s struggling to stay on herself.
Just Shannon and Katrina left on the Blue team. Katrina says she’s even more determined to stay in the race now.
Sharon’s not talking anymore, Steve notes. Sharon says, “Shit no!” Says she’s in the zone, though her back’s hurting.
Caitlin’s about to fall off as Steve is chatting to Sharon and he’s called off to the other end of the line. Caitlin manages to jog her way back on after almost falling in. The battle’s between Caitlin and Shannon at the moment with most of the rest of them continuing to trudge along fairly steadily.
And after another ad break Caitlin’s done for and into the pool.
Shannon’s capable of so much more, older, shorter legs, bung knee and she outlasted Caitlin, Shannan tells her.
Sharon’s legs have gone past pain and into numbness but her hip is giving off a lot of pain now too.
Blue’s been going for an hour and a half at this point.
But then Shannon’s out too as her foot falls off the back and she falls down and lands with her hands on the end of the treadmill. Ouch!
Katrina’s the last Blue team member standing. Spanner lead them to victory in Ararat and now Katrina can lead them here. Double trouble week, Shannan says!
Speed finally bumped up to 6. Sharon’s too short to continue walking so she’ll have to start to jog. Katrina and Kerry are cruising, Shannan says. Everyone else is struggling, but not those two.
Craig and Sharon are trying to push each other to go a little further, neither of them wants to be the first off.
But it looks like Sharon will be off next as she starts teetering at the edge… and then Craig goes off the end and into the pool. Sharon manages to mumble she beat Craig… but then she’s leaning back into the pool too.
Just Jane, Kerry and Katrina left now.
Jane offers to go with Katrina, they go at the same time? Katrina’s having none of that of course, if Jane wants to go she can go by herself!
Kerry’s not even looking bothered, Katrina says. Kerry’s been walking up and down the driveway a lot every day, it has a nice incline on it and he’s getting stronger every day.
Shannan’s trying to encourage her to keep going, as is Kerry.
But nope, Katrina’s out. She falls off the back due to misjudging how far back she was on the treadmill.
So Black has the 2kg advantage and now it’s just who needs the immunity. Kerry says to Jane that he needs it, other team don’t like him (?) so she doesn’t need it.
Jane hops off the back awkwardly at that and so Kerry’s safe. And he’s still plodding away!
Blue’s day goes from bad to worse. Kev’s not feeling very well after the challenge. He got out of the water feeling faint and he went quite pale so the medic is concerned. Kev describes some sharpness somewhere, but says that didn’t bother him as much as the dizziness he felt.
The medic’s going to give him a blood pressure test, he asks him to stand up to do another test. Kev gathers himself and makes it to his feet, but only for about five seconds. He has to sit back down on the poolside bench. Kev says he’ll stand up, just give him a sec. Medic says no, just stay there for him.
The medic then calls for an ambulance. Eep. At 27 Kev’s already on medication for his blood pressure due to his size. The medics are worried about his irregular heartbeat and they tell him if he feels the pain again he should let the medic know right away.
They load him up onto stretcher and wheel him out to the ambulance. He probably wouldn’t’ve fitted before so it’s probably a good sign he can get in one now.
Tuesday, 7.30pm we find out what’s happening with Big Kev. Hopefully he’ll be okay, would be sad to have him straight back out.
Though he’s at weigh in so he’s probably not going to be sent home at least.
And during last chance training Mary’s going to lose her shit and scream at Shannan. That should go well!
