9×04 – Dr Death Predicts Champion’s Demise
Previously on The Biggest Loser Ararat was challenged to be slightly less fat!
They could have sent someone home at the first elimination but they chose solidarity over “the game”.
Tonight the first real training session begins. Camp Biggest Loser’s going to disappear in a flood of sweat, tears and vomit!
At some point they’re going to find out when they die, too. Dr Swan’s going to be an even bigger arsehole this year.
And they’re promising Michelle is back tonight and she’s a secret weapon of some kind.
But first everyone’s slowly waking up and getting up out of bed and thinking about breakfast… when a bugler starts sounding off out the front. Everyone trundles out front in their jimjams still, much to Shannan’s amusement. Strange training clothes!
Shannan and Steve are going to split them up into two teams. Blue versus Black. Steve says it’ll be Shannan versus Commando and because he’s speaking, Commando gets first pick. Ha!
Steve picks Craig first. Then Shannan picks Mary. “Blue for life?” Hooray, it’s back!
Then Steve picks Shannon. Natalie’s Shannan’s next pick. He says they shouldn’t have favourites but she’s totally his favourite. She survived cancer!
Next up is Kerry for Commando Steve’s team. Shannan jokes that he might split Kerry and Toni up, but he decides to pick another strong head in Cameron. Think he’s going to be disappointed there but we’ll see!
Shannan picks Katrina, Steve picks Jane, Shannan Matt, Steve Caitlin. Caitlin’s in a blue hoodie which Steve says she’s going to have to burn if she wants to be in black.
Shannon goes to Shannan. Cal to Steve. Rodger’s on Shannan’s team and he fakes out a handshake with Commando Steve before picking up his shirt, much to everyone’s amusement including Steve.
Shannan’s thrilled to have Rodger after that because he says he’s going to bleed blue if they cut him.
Black and Blue, head to head. Neither of the trainers likes losing, either. Steve says they need to prove themselves to themself, but also the town.
Steve’s team goes to the sandpit, Shannan’s to the boxing gym. Time to train!
Shannan says it’s the first time he’s had an entirely handpicked team and he’s looking forward to leading Blue to another title.
First training session. Shannan says it’s the weightloss Mecca of the world. Out with the old ways, in with the new.
And first to ask for the bucket? Shannon, the lightest contestant is the first to have had enough.
Next up Shannan’s pushing Cameron on the cross trainer. Head up, chest up, keep going. Get to 100 and hold it there. But he can’t hold it up there and then BOOM, off the back of the cross trainer, which Shannan says happens to the best of them. Seriously? Because that seems horribly dangerous. Cam gave his head a good thump on the wall. If falling off is so common why not have some padding behind them or something?
Cam’s giving up, shouting he can’t do it. Shannan’s not impressed, says it’s the first session. Unlock your head! I think Cam lost the key years ago.
Shannan says Cam’s giving 100% or giving up, nothing in the middle. Not good enough. So he pairs Rodger and Cam up on the rowing machine because he knows that no matter what, Rodger will just keep going.
Rodger’s actually the baker at Cameron’s supermarket. They’re mates and Cam and Shannan are hoping that friendship will push him to go further.
But nope. Cameron’s given up on the rowing machine, too. Shannan says it’s a hard machine but if Cam’s going to be the leader Shannan hopes he’s going to be, he needs to step up now.
Cam puts another couple of strokes in and then goes flying off the back of the rowing machine, something that surely must take more effort than just falling over.
Shannan’s trying to get him to keep going on the rowing machine but Cam’s had enough and walks out of the gym, much to Rodger’s surprise. They’re in a head to head fight with the black team, Shannan says. If he’s not going to put in the effort he’s got to go!
Shannan follows Cam out after instructing the others to keep going.
Outside Cam insists he’s given it everything, but he didn’t have much trouble walking out there. Shannan says it’s not uncommon for people to leave in the first training session, but he’s never seen it from a self-described leader.
Cam says he’s got three kids at home and he’s got to be there for them. Shannan says if he gives up he won’t be there for another ten years for his kids, people 150kg don’t go on to live long happy lives.
Cam looks to be giving up but Shannan’s telling him just one more bit of rowing. Shannan stops babying him and goes back to the other champs who are still training.
Meanwhile in Commando Land! He wants to set the standard for the rest of the training sessions. He’s going to give them a flogging. He wants them working so hard that all they can think about is taking their next breath.
Commando’s sandpit has seen a few improvements this year. Some more logs for carrying around and various other bits and pieces.
Steve’s got them crawling through the sand. Kerry tries to do it like a baby crawls but Steve drags him back and tells him to “leopard crawl”, which is crawling on their bellies like a commando crawl.
Craig’s struggling already, facedown in the sand retching miserably. It’s not helping his teammates either, getting them a bit unsettled in the tummy. Craig’s a big boy at over 180kg, but he’ll have to be mentally tougher to keep his spot, Steve says.
Craig eventually manages to get up and shuffles to a fence to continue retching over the side. After the others have finished Steve calls him aside for a chat. Craig says he’s hurting, wondering how he let himself go. Nothing to live for so why care? He tells us he’s not happy, even though he might seem okay on the outside. He was engaged previously and realised it was his fault that it ended. His ex was fit and healthy and she’s recently gotten married to someone else while he’s put on another 50kg.
Time to turn your life around, Steve says. He’s got him doing rope flicks in the sand while shouting encouragement.
Back with Shannan and Cam’s still not back in. Cam reckons he’s giving 100% but he’s only giving 50-60%. Cam does eventually walk back in and gets back on the rowing machine. Everyone else is done and cheering Cam on from the side while he powers through the rest of his workout.
Shannan says this is the first fight they’ve had on their hands and Cam’s risen to the occasion. Blue will rise again!
Back in Ararat the Mayor says the town has embraced the show coming. They’re up to the challenge and they’re not going to keep that heaviest town tag. One morning the town is asked to turn up at the gravel pit. There’s a mound of dirt and some shovels and 200 people have turned up. Flags flutter on the breeze at the top of a huge hill… and out walks Michelle. HOORAY!!!
“I bet you weren’t expecting to see me.” I was. I follow you on Twitter, Mish. I knew you weren’t going to leave us!
She tells the crowd that nobody knows she’s there, only the 200 people and crew and so on… She’s their trainer, she’s their secret weapon. Between the two boys they’ve got 14 people, she’s got 200. I think they might be trying to stack the odds in your favour, Mish. Can’t have Shannan win too many more seasons than you!
The town’s challenge was to lose 26,000kg. It’s a lot of weight and Mish is there to help. So, how heavy is 26,000kg? Today they’re going to find out. They’re going to be moving 26,000kg for themselves.
They’re going to be divided into two teams and the first team to fill their truck, wins. The prize? Some kind of advantage for one of the teams in the house. LAME.
Gary, husband of Katrina who is on Shannan’s team, is put onto the blue team as extra motivation for him, Mish says.
There’s quite a few fit looking folks in amongst the townsfolk this time. Most seem to be overweight at worst, certainly not obese. Bit strange.
Blue team is first to fill up the bucket on the earthmover that then dumps it into the truck. Mish is amazed at how quickly both teams are getting the job done. Everyone’s shovelling and filling buckets very quickly.
Mish says it’s pretty much a training session, but it’s bringing the town together and having a bit of competition never hurts.
Mish thought she was going to have a bunch of unfit people on her hands but everyone’s pushing hard. I think it probably helps that a lot of them clearly are just regular, sort of healthy living people.
Black’s up to 14,000kg and still going strong. Have a feeling it’s going to get harder near the end! But they’ve taken the lead as they’ve got a good system in place.
After an ad break they’re neck and neck. Two loads left, but black is just in the lead. Blue’s trying to go faster, but it may not be enough!
“Don’t worry about the pain, the victory will be worth it!” Easy for you to say, Mish!
Black wins in the end. How convenient, Mish’s boyfriend gets the advantage. Ooooh!
After the challenge is done Mish asks if they’re a little sore, a little black and blue? Hurr hurr hurr.
Time to go home, eat well, train hard and Mish will see them real soon!
Back at Camp Biggest Loser they’re all called into a special room. Trainers are there, as is Dr Swan. Uh oh!
Shannan asks them who found the first training session hard? Hands up all round! Well, Dr Swan’s here to tell you some things that may be even harder to deal with.
Dr Swan says they’ve just done all the measurements on them and now they’re going to have a look at a prediction for when they’re going to die. Presumably using science, not a silly quiz on the interwebs?
Shannon’s first.
Age: 36
Predicted Death: 64
Not great, but not too bad. Not really. She has another 28 years in her, apparently.
She has a message from home. From her two little girls. Awww! The littlest one says she knows Mum will be okay and will come back happier and healthier. Aww!
Katrina’s Age: 45
Predicted Death: 70
25 years. 70’s not so bad. A lot of people die before that.
Her message is from her husband, of course. He says her weight has caused her to push him away sometimes. She has to stick with it, she’s his life. Awww!
Dr Swan takes a minute to talk about alcohol. Alcohol is a serious issue when you’re overweight and obese because your liver is already being damaged by all the fat.
Kerry, how much do you drink? “Heaps.”
Dr Swan then unveils a normal liver. Looks a bit ugly. But not as ugly as the liver from someone who died of cirrhosis! Ewwww. It’s all streaked and bruised looking and mishapen. Gross.
Let’s see how much Kerry’s been drinking… 24 kegs of beer a year. Kegs! That’s a lot of beers. No wonder he’s fat and unhealthy.
Kerry’s Age: 49
Predicted Death: 64
15 years left. Not too good. He wants another 30 years with his wife.
Rodger drinks but he also smokes.
Rodger’s Age: 51
Rodger’s Predicted Death: 72
21 years? 72’s pretty good for a smoker, many die before that in terrible, horrible agony as their family watches. Delightful. And he wants to be a healthy grandparent?
Cal’s next.
Cal’s Age: 34
Cal’s Predicted Death: 69
Matt’s Age: 37
Matt’s Predicted Death: 69
Caitlin’s Age: 17
Caitlin’s Predicted Death: 65
Natalie’s Age: 38
Natalie’s Predicted Death: 73
They didn’t take into account that she’d already had cancer because it was due to a virus (?) but obesity is another big risk factor for cancer.
One of the biggest risk factors is carrying a lot of weight around your waist. Craig’s 160cm around the waist. I know people shorter than that!
Dr Swan gets Katrina up, who is 160cm tall. That’s how far around he is!
Craig’s Age: 34
Craig’s Predicted Death: 59
Again, he’s massively overweight and drinks far too much alcohol. 59’s not so bad, given his lifestyle.
Mary’s next!
Mary’s Age: 48
Mary’s Predicted Death: 66
Biggest lady on the show ever but not the worst result on the show, either. She doesn’t want to die young, she says.
Her husband’s message is saying she’s got to lose the weight because he couldn’t be without her, he loves her. TEARS. Awww! Mary says her husband never cries but now she knows he loves her because he cried for her. She always worried he didn’t love her but now she knows.
Next up is a lecture on not smoking. First a healthy lung. Nice and pink and looking a bit like some kind of steak. It probably doesn’t taste like a steak. Don’t carve your lungs out and try to eat them, kids.
The unhealthy lung is horrific. Black as tar, some fat or tumour streaking down the side.
Sharon’s got two kids but she smokes. So the kids breathe in her smoke, which is bad for them too, not just her. She’s in tears and whispers she can’t do it.
Sharon’s Age: 31
Sharon’s Predicted Death: 69
Again. Not the worst result in the world. People die younger than that all the time. She might get hit by a bus because she’s too short for the driver to see.
Cam’s last. How much does he drink? He’s a binge drinker. If he drinks he drinks a lot. And he’s a smoker.
Cam’s Age: 34
Cam’s Predicted Death: 52
That’s the first one that’s really shocking, to be honest. 52’s young, especially for a Dad. He’s got kids and that’s much too soon for him to be out of their lives.
Cam’s message is from his kids and wife. They love and miss him but they’re very proud of him. Awww!
Cam’s in tears. He tells us he’s got to change now, he knows. He can’t go back and die at 52.
Steve tells them they can change it and if it gets hard, remember what they felt here. They can wind back the clock, it’s not too late.
Tomorrow night Commando Steve cuts loose on his team, showing he can move the big stupid rope so why can’t the seven of them?
And the “Chains of Pain” challenge kicks off. Dragging heavy chain across the beach, digging tunnels under logs, clambering over obstacles. Looks like fun!
What do people think of the death prediction stuff? Didn’t seem to have the same impact as the bio age thing. Even Cam’s gave him another 18 years to live, during which he might get some other wakeup call.
Bit weak, if you ask me!
