8×24 – And I Would Walk 500 Miles…

Previously on The Biggest Loser the top six got to pick their trainers for the run to finale and Gerald and Todd won their very own makeover.

Tonight we see the results of the makeover because the bastards didn’t show us last night. The weekly challenge also kicks off and it’s another endurance event, this time on the treadmills.

But before all that let’s listen to Shannan talk about the makeover again!

Oooh, Gerald’s looking very swish. Todd’s looking pretty cool too. Everyone’s very impressed. Sam says Gerald looks 20 years younger. Kirsten says Todd was looking gorgeous, he was like “WHOA!” Apparently.

Shannan says Todd’s looking like a young model, give everyone a Blue Steel. Todd hams it up quite well.

Gerald says Todd’s looking great. Gerald had been blaming himself for Todd’s weight but now Todd is looking much happier and healthier, it’s all fixed now.

Todd says Gerald looks awesome too. He looks like a thirty year old… Not so sure about that!

They still haven’t seen what their makeovers look like but there’s a big mirror out on the lawn and Shannan leads Todd over to have a look first. Eyes closed, think about all the sacrifices you’ve made, then open your eyes. Todd opens his eyes and is blown away. Says he looks like a normal kid now. Katie tells us he’s going to be a ladykiller. Ha!

Gerald says Todd’s always been a normal kid, he just didn’t see it in himself before.

Time for Gerald to have a look in the mirror, too. He waits for a moment and then opens his eyes and is stunned. Then says the wife’s going to have some fun with him.

GIGGITY!

Gerald’s not felt so good since he was 21.

Sophie started the whole journey for them, what would she say if she could see them now? We get another reminder about Sophie’s heart and spina bifida problems. Gerald says the only thing missing really is her and his wife getting to see the transformation. Shannan then says they’ve got some very special girls to visit them. Awww, it’s Sophie and the wifey!

Mum gives Todd a huge hug and then realises the man next to Todd is her husband. More hugs!

Shannan has a chat with Sophie then about what she’s done in signing them up. She never thought they’d do so good, never thought they’d even get on the show. She was worried about Gerald because he’s always been there for her and if he kept putting the weight on he’d be at a bigger risk of a heart attack. Mum was worried too. She might lose her husband and Todd was going down the same track. But look at them now!

Gerald says the future’s looking pretty good now. And tells us it’s going to fire him up even more!

After an ad break it’s back to training. Green and Grey are out on the park area. Not a lot of equipment today. They’re doing death by squats, Shannan says.

It’s easy. You start with one squat. Then you can rest for 30 seconds. Then you do two reps. Then you keep doing that until you can’t increase the number any higher. Gerald’s legs and back and knees are killing him… but Todd’s not even puffing when Gerald has to call it quits.

Mandy says Todd’s great to train with because he’ll keep pushing… the only problem is you’ll never beat him!

Steve’s got his Orange and Blue teams in the sandpit again. Doing commando crawls over the surface.

Richard’s thinking about who he’d like to send home. Top of the list is Sam, who took some cheap shots at The King. So off with his head! Then the Green team, because they’re at the top of the leaderboard.

Steve tells them all that when they get back to the house they’re the wolves. Everyone else is the sheep. The wolves don’t care what the sheep think. Wolves eat sheep!

Shannan’s chuffed with Todd’s results in death by squats. He’s ended up doing 435 squats in 14 minutes and 30 seconds. Shannan tells us it’s not just impressive by Biggest Loser standards, it’s superhuman. Todd’s confidence is growing the most. He’s always been an athlete and now the body weight is being stripped away the other teams had better watch out.

Trainer tip with Michelle! Weight training is the fountain of youth and looking at how amazing Michelle looks it’s hard to argue with her. Especially as she could snap me like a twig!

Now it’s time to head to the challenge which this time is in a big empty theatre type room set up with a bunch of treadmills. Hayley hopes they like treadmills!

The treadmills will be set on an incline of 5. Whatever that means! They’ll start at a leisurely stroll of 3km/hr. Every ten minutes they’ll have to bump the speed up by half a kilometre per hour. Walk or run for as long as possible. Lots of dubious faces at all this. Last contestant standing will win for their team. And what’s on offer? Immunity, of course.

But there’s one more thing Hayley has to fill them in on. They’ve rounded up some spectators for this challenge and everyone’s expecting it will be family members. But it’s not, it’s the giant cardboard cutouts of themselves. Everyone’s shocked by how big they all used to be.

And another thing, they’ll all be doing the challenge while wearing a weight vest containing all the weight they’ve lost so far.

Shannan tells us it was far more emotionally confronting than it was a physical challenge.

Brett’s got 42.1kg in his vest. Both Shannan and Steve have to help him pull it up and over his shoulders. Brett’s astounded he used to play basketball at that weight.

Richard even calls out encouragement to Brett before the challenge. I think they all recognise this is going to be a daunting challenge, nevermind winning it.

The rules are pretty simple. Hold the handrails or fall off and you’re out.

Kirsten’s shocked by how much difference the weight makes. She says it doesn’t matter how fit you are, putting that extra weight on puts you five steps back. Richard’s feeling the burn early on, as is Sam. Todd’s doing okay but he knows he has to do this for his Dad. Awww!

Quite a few of them are already working up a sweat at 3km/hr for ten minutes and then Hayley tells them all to bump it up half a kilometre an hour.

Todd’s looking strong, Gerald says. Everyone’s working up a sweat and Todd’s looking just fine. Richard’s fiddling with his weight vest a lot, Sam notices, so he thinks at least King Richard won’t get immunity.

After an ad break they’re already up to 4km/hr.

Everyone’s got their own way of dealing with pain, Shannan says, but they’re all feeling it now. Brett’s struggling with his breathing with the weight of the vest pressing down on his chest. He’s trying to put that out of his mind though and keep trooping on.

Up to 4.5km/hr and Mish says this is where it starts getting interesting. Shannan comes over for a chat with Brett and he’s feeling like he’s being squashed. Mandy says she can tell Brett’s struggling and who wouldn’t with 42kg on your chest.

Shannan and Steve help lift the weight off and Brett’s shirt is pretty much dripping sweat, poor bugger. Brett’s very upset but Shannan’s in his ear right away telling him not to be disappointed. He was carrying twice what some of the others are carrying so he’s actually done really well. Shannan needs him to keep his head in the game because they’ve still got a weigh in to win!

Gerald’s remembering how much he used to struggle in his day to day activities. Shannan’s getting him to control his breathing and bring his heart rate down a bit but he knows Gerald’s body is hurting. Yet Gerald’s head is so tough he’s still going.

Forty minutes down, up the speed to 5km/hr. Sam says when the speed goes up it’s hard to adjust the rhythm.

Meanwhile Janet’s looking a bit wobbly and Kirsten’s trying to encourage her. Janet remembers looking up at Kirsten and nothing else after that. She’s pushed herself so hard she’s passed out while still standing up, Shannan says. Kirsten’s getting a bit distraught but Todd calls across that Janet’s going to be fine, just keep going!

Janet’s upset because she wasn’t ready to stop.

Gerald says it’s a free time to get calories off so he’s trying to keep going as long as possible, but there’s only so long you can keep going…

As we come back from an ad break Gerald’s grunting in pain and tells us he’s in too much pain to keep going. Todd calls across just before that he’s got this, he can do this. Go Todd!

Mandy’s in the zone just head down trudging away. And now they’re up to 5.5km/hr and Amber’s freaking out. She’s got 17.5kg on and she’s talking about needing to get off which Richard is disappointed by since it’s half what he’s got on.

And there goes Amber, slowly crumpling down to the safety mat behind the treadmill.

It looks like Kirsten might be the next out but then Katie’s legs go out from under her and she’s off the back of the treadmill. Robyn kind of wants to go and check on her daughter but at the same time she’s still on there with all that weight and a sore back.

Then in quick succession Kirsten and Jess both tap out, too.

Four parents left in and just Todd left for the kids. Steve says he’s fifteen years of age and he’s the only one left. “I ain’t giving up! It’s all in the head.” Steve gets a big grin on his face at that. Gerald’s very proud of his boy, too.

Mandy’s feeling herself getting very tired as 5.5km/hr drags on. She wanted to get to 6km but she’s had to bow out before then.

Just green, blue, red and orange to go. And they’ve been going for an hour, time to go up to 6km/hr.

Todd’s pretty proud of himself. He’s keeping his mind busy as he walks, playing air drums as he goes along. Robyn shakes her head at us and says, “Kids!”

The parents are all looking a lot worse for wear than Todd. And then Sam has to bow out as well.

Robyn’s still trudging on but her back is hurting her too much and she gives up not long after. She’s angry at herself for letting the pain beat her. Commando Steve gives her a big hug after she gets the weight off.

Todd’s got another hour in him, easy, Gerald says. Richard reckons he’s got another two hours. He’s obviously not going to make another hour though…

6km/hr is a bad speed, Shannan says, because it’s either a very fast walk or a very slow jog.

Hour and ten minutes, up to 6.5km/hr you go!

Todd’s looking to be struggling a bit more at that speed. Stumbling and having to walk a bit faster than he’d like to keep up. Richard’s got a longer strider so he’s doing it a little easier.

Richard tells Todd to step off, he’s got his back. But Todd’s having none of that.

Todd’s looking like he won’t be able to keep going and he finally has to pull the plug but he tells Shannan as he puts his hands on the side that it won’t matter because they won’t be under the yellow line anyway. Sure hope not!

Richard’s very pleased with himself for getting immunity. Won’t be any dethroning of the King this week.

Gerald’s not too thrilled with Richard and Amber having immunity. Richard’s only after the money, Gerald reckons. Sam knows he’s got to get above the yellow line, too.

Sunday night, King Dick has immunity so there’s only three other spots above the yellow line. Should be a fun weigh in as a result!
