8×06 – The Biggest Loser Half Ass Marathon
Previously on The Biggest Loser… THE FRIDGE! Yellow have Shannan all to themselves for the rest of the week. Lucky girls.
Tonight! More training dramas and they’re going to attempt a half marathon again. Already? Okay. Chris and Mark will have a bust up part way through that might come to blows. How exciting!
But first, Anita and Cher are planning out their dinner when their exclusive trainer Shannan exclusively uses their exclusive iPhone to exclusively phone them. Exclusively! Shannan is setting them homework – 10km on the treadmill followed by 10km on the crosstrainer, set on level 6. Whatever that means! Shannan thinks it’s a hard ask but he thinks they can do it.
After dinner Anita’s powering through her homework… Cher’s given up partway through. FOR SHAME. The next day Shannan checks in with them. Anita said it was painful. Cher didn’t do all hers in one shot. Cher admits she did 2km on the treadmill. And that was it. Shannan asks her how she thinks it works? Cher says she didn’t give it her all.
Shannan tells us Cher is lazy and has no pain threshold and she quit. Cher says it was hard and Shannan says nobody said it would be easy! Shannan asks Anita if Cher let her down and she admits she did feel let down. Shannan says he knows she can do it, it’s just time for some tough love. She’s a tough cookie, her Mum says.
Shannan knows the only way to toughen up is to feel the pain and discomfort. Today’s going to hurt! The Mums in the comp are the weapons, Shannan says. They’re there with a purpose.
Anita’s going and going and Cher feels weak in comparison. Cher doesn’t feel like she’s got anymore in her. Her arms are sore from the boxing and she’s using them to hold herself up on the treadmill and it HURTS. Shannan tells us the more you moan and complain about it, the more you believe it. Cher tries to get off and leave but Shannan gets in her way and cajoles her back into getting on. Anita tells us she was worried Cher would be the first to quit but Cher gets back on. Shannan has her shouting out, “I’m not going to quit!” Until all of Australia can hear it. Not sure she has quite that volume in her, Shannan!
Meanwhile Commando Steve’s got his kids in the sandpit again! Kevin’s with Steve today and he’s a little worried because Kevin’s a big man on uneven footing.
But Kevin’s got strength on his side when it comes to weights, he’s throwing the dumbbell around like it’s nothing, Steve says.
Steve calls him over at one point and Kevin says… in a sec! Which Steve says he’s been saying all his life, in a sec, in a minute, tomorrow, next week and so on. He’s running out of time to find the time to lose the weight. It’s about commitment now, proving he can do this, Steve tells him.
Kevin’s huffing and puffing and can finally take no more, beaching himself on the sand. He’s almost landed on a dumbell on the way down and then he lies down right on top of it. That can’t be comfortable, even with all the padding from his flesh and the sand. Steve’s wondering what he’ll do – it’s not like he can pick the guy back up!
“Get up, Kev!” “No!”
Kevin’s worried he’ll take one step forward to get up and then fall on the camera guy and Steve says not to worry about them. BWAHAHAHAAHAHAHA You’re an evil man, Steve. I love you!
Kevin does finally make it back up, if you were worried.
Then it’s off to Michelle-land! Who’s looking particularly fetching in a tight red halter top and open running jacket. No rest in today’s session as Mish has them moving from station to station, one after the other after the other. She wants them feeling something today. Some of them have said they feel numb, time to feel something.
Todd’s running at an impressive clip on the treadmill while she’s making her speech.
Mish wants them all to use their loved one video things to spur them on to greater efforts today. It’s working for Richard, it seems. Kirsten still looks a bit absent.
Katie thought she was a disappointment, she’s sobbing during her session. She never realised how much her Dad loves her, she’s never seen him cry like that. Awwwww. Mish now wants Katie to feel proud of herself! She’s setting up some short and long term goals. Her long time goal is to get in the Army. Mish says she’s got to get TOUGH if she wants into the Army.
And now they’re off somewhere in the cars. The lack of specific teams this year means they’re mostly just boring grey cars. Not as cool as the old coloured ones.
Everyone’s got no idea what’s happening, blah blah blah. They’re at the Royal National Park. To participate in an event that brings even trained athletes to their knees, has them begging to stop. It’s The Biggest Loser Half Marathon!
Come on, Kevin can barely walk to training, how will he do a 21km course?
Quite a few people look very scared. As it turns out, they don’t need to be so scared. They’re to be divided into three groups and each couple must do at least one 3km lap, with the remaining laps to be divided among the rest. So it’s really not a half marathon for any one team. Weaksauce!
Gerald and Todd, Mandy and Brett, Cher and Anita are Team Shannan. Team Commando are Robyn and Katie, Mark and Chris, Kevin and Rosemary. Team Michelle is therefore Sam and Jess, Richard and Amber, Janet and Kirsten.
It’s going to be tough. And frustrating! Because each pair will be tethered to their loved one. And each couple from the winning team will get a 1kg weight advantage at the next weigh in. Nice!
Ready, steady, baked beans and spaghetti!
Richard’s got a plan for him and Amber to go out hard and take the lead with the others to hopefully maintain it. Yeah, good luck with that!
Gerald and Todd are the ones to take the lead early but Richard and Amber quickly go past them at a steadier pace.
Shannan says this’ll be a test of their bonds. And their newfound fitness levels!
Shannan tells Gerald and Todd that they can catch up to Chris and Mark because they always do better in training than them. And it proves true!
Richard and Amber are taking a nice lead, though Amber’s struggling a bit.
Chris is struggling but Mark is trying to encourage him to go faster. He’s showing good support so far but Chris is huffing and puffing a lot. Not sure how many quick laps they’ll get out of him!
Richard and Amber are first to the end of the route and to start heading back to the start/finish line. Gerald and Todd are still in second, Chris and Mark trailing… The first two teams are doing a lot more jogging, Chris and Mark are spending a lot of time walking. Mish splits off from Richard and Amber to make sure the next team is ready to go and Richard and Amber manage to keep running all by themselves, right to the finish line. Amber needs to have a bit of a sit down after that, but they’ve done well.
Gerald and Todd come in next, Todd’s not looking too bad but Gerald’s looking knackered.
Brett’s Shannan’s athlete, he says. Weird idea of athlete, Shannan! Brett’s worried about his ankles on the slightly rocky path but Shannan tells him he’ll be fine. Janet’s worried about her knees as well since in training she’s struggled to run.
Robyn says it felt like forever for the Black Team to get back, they wanted to get out there and see what they’re capable of.
Brett and Mandy have done a kilometre and Brett needs a bit of breather. But Robyn and Katie are catching up!
Robyn, however, says she wouldn’t’ve noticed them anyway. Says they could have been dancing around naked and singing, she would have just kept trudging anyway.
Shannan’s trying to encourage Brett to run but every time Brett says he can’t. Shannan’s pulling out every trick he can think of but he just can’t get him going again. Shannan eventually puts his hand on Brett’s back and starts pushing him along, he’s that sure Brett can keep going. And Brett does manage a slow jog at last. Brett keeps asking to stop but he reckons he’s giving 110%. Shannan reckons it’s about 60% at most.
Brett eventually snaps and explodes, slapping Shannan’s hand away and looks like he’s going to square up to him. That would be hilarious! Please have that happen after the ad break!
Sadly not. Brett gets back to walking along slowly and Shannan agrees that if Brett keeps pace with him he won’t touch him. Shannan can see that Brett’s weight has taken a toll on his personality that Brett really hasn’t noticed before. This is the reality check he needed, Shannan thinks. Shannan’s also aware of him snapping at Michelle the other day so I guess they’ve been trading training notes.
Brett says it’s not him, that angry guy, but maybe that’s who he’s become? Shannan says he’ll never hold such things against him because he knows where it’s coming from.
Team Commando takes the lead thanks to Robyn and Katie! Janet and Kirsten feel they’ve let Richard and Amber down a bit.
And anyway, it’s time for Team Commando to send Kevin and Rosemary out. And I think we all know Kevin’s not going to do much running! Moving towards the new you, Commando Steve says. He’s hoping Kevin’s got a lot in the tank. They’re trying to go as fast as they can but Team Mish overtakes them pretty early. They’re admiring trees as they walk and having a chat.
Kevin’s Dad used to say if he was bored, go for a walk. Then walking bored him even more. So he’d sit behind a computer instead. He’s regretting that now.
Sam’s injured his knee in training, Mish says, but his walk is so quick it’s like a jog anyway. Mish is chuffed. Jess is struggling to keep up with him.
Brett and Mandy finally come back in in third place. Gerald and Todd are next and Gerald says he’s surprised Brett struggled so much since he’s a workhorse in the gym. Shannan thinks the unsung hero of the show so far is Gerald, because no matter how tired or sore he gets he never complains and never stops.
Steve says Kevin’s doing the best he can. For a 254kg man he’s done well. Steve says it’d be much like him trying to carry another full grown man for 3km. I bet Steve could do that!
One more hill, Kevin! Robyn and Katie walk a bit back up the course to walk the rest of the way with Kevin… but Kev is so inspired by the girls coming to greet him, Kevin breaks into a jog! It’s a slow jog, to be sure, but it’s surprising he managed it at all. Kevin gets a good cheer and round of applause from the other contestants when they put their 3km up on the board.
Mark and Chris are on another lap. Mark is getting frustrated with Chris’ reluctance to run. Chris doesn’t care though! Stuff the others. Chris has finally had enough and says he doesn’t care about any of it and detaches himself from Mark. Breaking the rules! Disqualify! Disqualifyyyyy!
Mark shoves Chris off the side of the path. Chris may have finally taken the hint because he clips back on and carries on walking. Mark’s getting increasingly frustrated, even so. Steve tries to get him to calm down a bit, but Chris isn’t a racehorse, he says. But it’s a race, Mark retorts!
Cher and Anita are both carrying injuries into their first challenge but they’re not ones that rule them out. So they need to get at least one lap done.
Janet and Kirsten are trudging along at a slow jog. Janet’s very much in the zone, she says at one point the pain just went away and she felt like she could keep going forever.
Cher’s in pain! Shannan needs her to toughen up some more and keep going. Suck it up! Push through the pain and keep going. They finally make it to the finish line. Without stopping, too!
Team Michelle’s in first place, Team Shannan in second and… then Robyn and Katie overtake for Team Commando.
Shannan’s at his wit’s end trying to get more out of Brett. He doesn’t want to go back to pushing him along because that didn’t go so well. Mandy tries to get him to jog to the bend, but even that he can’t do. Brett says he’s exhausted. I’ve no doubt he’s tired, more than 3km is tiring for many people. But exhausted? He’s not in danger of falling over, he’s still coherent. He’s fine! It’s his head letting him down today, Shannan reckons.
Katie’s not a crier, she says. Through tears! She’s feeling the pinch, Steve says. She hasn’t had as much life experience as her Mum and Steve, she just needs them to hold it together for her. She may be hurting but she’s flying along, Steve says. They’re not giving up on her! Still can’t work out what game it is Katie’s playing. Looks a bit like World of Warcraft. Can anyone make it out?
Steve’s asking them in the home stretch if they’ve got what it takes to back it up. Can they turn around and do another lap back to back. Katie didn’t think she could, Robyn was suggesting maybe they should stop. Katie gets to the final couple of metres and says… “We’re doing another!” She crosses the line and goes around Chris and Mark, taking her Mum with her on another lap. She thought Steve must have had heat stroke to suggest it but she’s decided to do it!
Katie says everything in her head is telling her to stop but Robyn’s emptied her head and is just doing it.
Richard and Amber are ahead of them by a fair margin but Amber’s struggling a bit in the home stretch. Katie and Robyn are doing it tough towards the end but Robyn’s urging Katie into a faster run. Her leg hurts and she wants to be finished!
Mark says he wasn’t expecting them to come back in the lead but they did close the lap by quite a goodly amount.
Robyn and Katie pull Steve into a big group hug afterwards. Awwww!
Mark’s determined to catch Team Mish. He’s telling his Dad they can still win this. Janet and Kirsten are doing the final lap for Michelle’s team. They’re not running too much, but they’re determined to come in ahead of everyone.
And they have! Team Mish rounds the final corner and the whole team is waiting for them. They finish the race together and put their 21km up on the board. Go Team Mish! Everyone on the team put in a good effort, no weak links, they say.
Mark and Chris finish the race for Team Steve in second place. Unsurprisingly the team with the heaviest contestants, Team Shannan, came in last.
Light Blue, Pink and Red teams all get a 1kg advantage at the weigh in on Sunday.
Sunday night! Where’s Kevin? He’s not in training. Michelle is NOT HAPPY. Then the first proper competitive weigh in. Which teams will fall below the Yellow Line and be the first to be sent home?
I’ll go ahead and guess… Janet and Kirsten will be below the line. But I don’t know who they might go under with!
