TBL 7×69 – SIXTY-NINER DUDE!!! (Legend pep talks and an obstacle course)
Previously on The Biggest Loser there was a big group workout and the contestants all did a good job at getting some Aussies working up a sweat!
The contestants hosted a cocktail party, catered by themselves mostly, then mingled with a bunch of singles from a dating service and from the internets.
So, they mingled with a bunch of creepers!
Tonight! Loser Legend Bob returns for a chat, along with a couple of Aussie sporting legends. And Masterchef champ Eamon Sullivan.
Later, they revisit the crazy obstacle course from earlier in the show where two champions from each team had to traverse the various obstacles together.
But first the contestants come out onto the paradeground to meet all four trainers. Never a good sign, usually means they’ve cooked something up for them.
So how’d the cocktail party go? They had fun. Alex got “one or two” phone numbers, much to Mish’s delight.
Final week, Steve says. Only three of them will be going to Finale. Who wants it the most?
To help them on their way they’ve brought four people to Camp, one for each of them, to help bring them to the next level.
And here they are!
John Eales! Margie’s stoked.
Eamon Sullivan, Natalie Cook. Margie quite likes Natalie Cook, too. You know. LIKE LIKE.
And BOB! Hi Bob! We’ve missed you!
Margie’s got John Eales to train with today. 86 test caps, two world cups, Bledisloe Cups, many of the matches won off his boot. He’ll be the perfect person to train her today.
Margie’s super excited, can’t wait to get smashed in training she says.
For Alex? Alex gets Bob, of course. They said age was a barrier to losing weight, Bob proved them wrong.
Shannan recaps Bobs journey quickly, from collapsing on the beach at Fitzroy Island and making the decision to get up and fight. He started out as a sad, broken man and went on to lose 52% of his body weight and win the series.
What Shannan doesn’t add is that Bob also did it all with great dignity and respect for all the other contestants at all times, never played the game, never got nasty or anything like that. He’s a lot of people’s favourite contestant from all the seasons of the show.
Next, Natalie Cook. She’s qualified for her fifth Summer Olympics, meaning she’s been at the top of her game for over 20 years. Amazing achievement.
Kasey’s getting to train with Nat.
And last, Eamon Sullivan. Brenda’s got him, of course. Eamon’s qualified for his third Olympic Games and he’s only 26!
Steve, Bob and Alex are going to train on the paradeground.
Nat, Tiff and Kasey are in the dojang. Nat gets her to high five first because winning is all about the feeling, gotta be confident and so on.
Nat’s got one of her gold medals to urge Kasey on, she has to visualise grabbing it. She also has a card with “I AM” above The Biggest Loser logo, so she can read it out, with confidence.
Also, how do you get there? Get to 75kg. Kasey’s 87kg at the moment.
No! What is she now? 75kg. Right. Now she just has to wait for the scales to catch up.
I guess science isn’t Nat Cook’s strong point.
Nat’s got Kasey doing her special “Championship Minute” workout. Just when you think a section of the workout is over you have to push hard for the final minute, gotta push the pace to win and so on.
Kasey says it’s a hard session but she doesn’t want to disappoint Natalie Cook!
Would Kasey have said she was a fit person 16 weeks ago? No, but she is now. What do fit people do? Eat right, exercise… oh and think right! Nat gives her another high five.
Kasey’s loving the philosophy Nat’s taught her today, now she thinks of herself as The Biggest Loser already and it’s just doing what needs to be done now, no self doubt anymore.
Nat has Kasey doing 30 seconds on the rowing machine and every five seconds she has to holler out that she’s the biggest loser. Over and over.
Nat thinks Kasey can do it, she’s fit and strong now and so long as she stays on track she can get there. She’s awesome!
The session ends with some sidekicks to kick the competition away.
Tiff says she hopes Kasey takes away that she’s already a winner and all she has to do is take it now.
BOB! Bob and Alex and Steve on the paradeground.
Bob never believed he could win, didn’t win anything during his time at Camp and didn’t expect to win the show, was never really a consideration of his. It wasn’t until the last day that he realised that it was about winning. For Bob it was about conquering himself and wanting to be fit and healthy right to the end of his life.
Winning the whole show was pretty great, too. But what Alex should really take away from it is the winning for life thing.
Alex tells us Bob’s a huge inspiration for him. He won the entire thing at 57!
There’s some stairs there and some spinbikes set up. Does Alex know how many stairs there are? No, he’s never counted.
Bob has. Bob knows there’s 19 of them. Yay Bob!
Steve’s setting them a challenge incorporating the spinbikes and the stairs. Do a distance on the bike, then go up the stairs and back down and around the spinbike and back up and down the stairs again then back on the bike. Repeat that a few times and see who wins!
Alex thinks he might be in with a chance here since Bob’s 10 years older than Alex.
What’s Bob said to Alex that’s stuck with him today? Bob told him to keep fighting, never stop, the journey only ends when you’re dead and there’s no point coming to Camp if you don’t keep it up.
Alex thought he could beat Bob but it’s not looking good… Bob gets up the stairs before Alex is done…
But then, proving again why everyone loves Bob, Bob waits up the top of the stairs for Alex to get up there and they trot down together and across the finish line together.
Bob tells us he hopes Alex goes all the way and wins. Both because it’s another one up for the old guys! But also because it proves there’s no excuses, age isn’t a factor, you will either do it or you won’t.
Now it’s time for Brenda, Shannan and Eamon training. Shannan says Brenda’s already physically strong but what she needs to take from Eamon is the mental side of training and preparation. Eamon’s been through the wringer and done well so he knows what he’s talking about.
Shannan thinks having Eamon there is perfect for Brenda right now as he needs her to be at the peak of her mental strength for the rest of this week.
Brenda’s determined to finish strong and will do everything she can.
.2 of a second between winning and second place in Eamon’s sport, much as there can be a tiny amount of weight between winning and losing at the Loser weigh ins.
Shannan’s really impressed by the olympian style workout Eamon’s putting Brenda through. There’s lots of back and forth between strength training and cardio and stuff.
Eamon asks her what she’s struggled with most at Camp? Believing in herself. She’s not the fittest, the fastest or the strongest but it took her trainer Shannan to teach her that the most important part is to be consistent.
Eamon can relate. People in the media, people around the country, other competitors and so on have told him he’s too small and he shouldn’t be trying to do this but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks, you just have to do your best. Can’t let people tell you what you’re capable of. Believe in yourself, put in 100% and the results will come.
Eamon can see some similarities with Brenda’s story and his own. While Brenda’s struggled with her weight Eamon’s struggled with injuries, but there’s always obstacles to overcome.
It’s the one percenter that makes the difference, Eamon says. Shannan explains that it’s what you do over and above what everyone else does. If you have to do 100 pushups, do 101. The little things like that are important.
Brenda’s not leaving with any regret. She’s leaving as part of the Final Three. The others are all thinking about what they’re going to do when they get out and she’s just focused on winning.
Shannan’s pleased by the way Eamon’s gotten into Brenda’s head today, it’s just what Brenda needs.
Eamon tells Brenda she’s turned into an athlete which is incredible given from where she’s come.
Eamon tells us he sees a lot of himself in Brenda and she’s got the determination to go all the way.
Eamon’s such a lovely chap!
Now time for John Eales, Margie and Mish!
Margie’s in shock getting to train with John. He’s so cool and calm and amazing.
First part of the training session is a warm up exercise. Run from one set of cones to the other. Mish and John are standing at the mid point and will pass Margie a ball, Margie then passes it to the other and keeps running to the other set of cones. Etc.
Part of it is getting Margie to be able to focus on her skills while also doing the exercise, not just warming up.
Mish says they’ve brought in champions because they know what it takes to be winners.
Margie normally plays tight head in rugby, which John says is the hardest position in the game. Margie represented Queensland and if she hadn’t gotten out of the game she thinks she may’ve gone on to rep for Australia, so she’s disappointed in herself.
Once she quit rugby she opened her first restaurant and then put on 60kg in one year.
Good lord!
Margie’s belief in herself dwindled away. John says belief doesn’t come naturally, it comes from proving things to yourself.
Margie feels on top of the world now though!
Mish thinks it’s perfect timing, having John there today, they’re a perfect match.
Margie can absolutely win the show, she says. She’s the fittest one there, she’s still quite a bit heavier than the other girls, her intensity in training is above everyone, etc.
Margie’s doing some tackling drills with John and Mish is encouraging her to hit him harder, he’s a Wallaby, it’s okay.
John then passes the tackle pad to Mish for the last one and Margie asks if she can still go just as hard and Mish says… okay!
Margie starts trotting in for the tackle but Mish laughs and hops out of the way before the impact. Mish is tough but simple physics dictates she’d get SMASHED!
John says it’s been great and a privilege to come and see how they train at Camp, it’s been fun!
He’s also giving Margie a memento of his visit. A signed Wallabies shirt! With a personalised message regarding the Reds (Queenslanders) and the Wallabies. Awwww!
John says he knows she can go all the way and win, etc.
Margie’s almost struck dumb and has to hug and give John a kiss before saying it’s been a huge honour having him there and she’s really grateful for him coming to train her today.
Now the trainers are in The Bunker checking in on their contestants during the off hours.
First thing we see is Brenda training her arse off at 5.17am. And still going at 6.28am.
Shannan says it’s a hard slog, getting up that early and doing all that training all by yourself and Mish agrees, saying it’s really hard to get yourself motivated in the pitch black of the morning.
Brenda’s then in the kitchen getting her food ready and is weighing out everything.
Then more training. 4.04am the next day. And she goes for an hour and a half.
And then back in her PJs to go to the kitchen to prepare her breakfast as if she hasn’t been training already! Sneaky.
Then another morning, 1.15am, this time with Margie though. Everyone’s gobsmacked.
Now we see some Alex and Kasey working out together and eating together and so on. Tiff’s surprised but pleased that Kasey’s working out consistently like she promised.
Alex is taking it pretty easy but he’s promised Commando he’d do what he could, despite his injury.
Of course it all comes down to the final weigh in and who wants it bad enough.
Next day they’re in the van and back to Glenworth Valley, where the epic obstacle course is set up.
Final challenge! The Valley Stampede again!
They went through hell the first time around, still got fond memories? Kasey doesn’t seem to have any. The worst bit for her was crawling underneath the net and through the mud.
Margie, Alex and Brenda didn’t get to compete the first time around due to injuries but they’ll all get to today.
Hayley’s worried about Alex, what’s he going to break today? A finger, maybe? A toe? Still got some more ribs to break. Maybe Alex will break Steve!
Last time they had their trainers there for encouragement but this time they’re going to be tied to their trainer!
Regretting that comment now Alex, Steve asks with a laugh.
Margie’s not worried about running the course with Mish saying that if worst comes to worst she can just pick Mish up under her arm and run along like that.
Mish is very worried! She’s having to run around the course with an angry lesbian! Margie starts laughing her arse off.
Brenda thinks they’ll do okay. Shannan’s quite relieved because he’s got a tough chick instead of soft blokes this time.
Tiff will be fine, the mud’s not so bad Kasey says. Tiff wishes she wasn’t on the white team! Shannan says she does black and white alright, how’s she do in brown? Bwahaha!
Getting through the obstacle course will be worth it, Hayley promises. Waiting at the finish line will be someone they haven’t seen for a very long time and it’s going to be very emotional, rah rah rah.
So, good, no stupid weight advantages or penalties for the final weigh in, thank god for that.
Kasey asks if she gets to yell at Tiff this time when she won’t run through the mud and Tiff says she may have to, yes!
Kasey’s the only one familiar with the obstacles as she did it back in week three. She knows what does and doesn’t work so she thinks she has an advantage.
Kasey’s got some fighting words – Margie needs to tie up her shoelaces. Margie does a big fake laugh. Margie and Mish mime breaking the other teams over their knees and throwing them aside.
Margie, afterwards with Mish, says she knew they were going to win together. “Look at us!” Mish echoes her.
Ready, steady, go!
Mish is very competitive, Margie tells us but so is Margie so it’s a good combination.
Margie injured her back a few days back so it’s heavily strapped and she can’t do any lifting so Mish has to drag a tire up a hill by herself.
Mish smashes it. Margie says she’s amazing. Mish says she’s right! Then they both have a giggle. Dorks!
Tiff and Kasey are working together. They’re mainly aiming not to come last. They don’t think they can win but they’ll be happy with second or third.
Tiff says the tire was HEAVY! It was murder. They’re already behind everyone else after the first obstacle. Strength isn’t their forte but they’ve got agility and speed on their side so they’re going to catch up!
Alex is determined to keep running for the whole course, not walk it. Alex can’t lug the tire either so it’s mostly down to Steve for that and he’s done just fine, of course.
Alex and Steve are in second place behind Margie and Mish.
But Shannan and Brenda go past Alex and Steve as they do the over log, under log, over log bit.
Mish and Margie get to a bus and have to first go through it, then crawl under it. They try and roll underneath rather than crawl but of course that just leads to them wrapping their cord around themselves and getting stuck. Oops! They unravel themselves and shimmy under the rest of the way.
Margie says being attached to a Mish has been a dream of hers for a long time and today it came true and she’s really happy about it. Mish says Margie’s only human and Margie agrees.
Brenda and Shannan are slowly gaining ground on Mish and Margie. Alex and Steve are still in third and soldiering on. Must mean Tiff and Kasey are still bringing up the rear.
Mish and Margie are through a chilly bath/pool thing first and out the other side. Brenda and Shannan seem to be catching but it’s hard to tell, of course, due to editing.
Margie thought crawling under the net through the mud would be pretty easy but it turned out to be quite hard as the mud gives way underneath you and she ends up faceplanting at one point.
Kasey’s running through the whole course and Tiff’s not having to yell at her to run even once so she’s happy!
Shannan and Brenda get going underneath the cargo net before Margie and Mish escape it. Shannan’s trying to keep up a good pace under the net just letting it slide over his back. They’re closing the gap and Mish knows they’re going to have to pick up the pace.
Then they get to the flooded tunnel things and have to crawl through. Margie hesitates at the entrance as she gets claustrophobic and Mish is trying to get her going as soon as possible, not sticking around and letting Shannan and Brenda catch up.
Margie’s freaking out a bit but Mish is having none of it and starts pulling her through. Margie gets through it eventually. Both are soaked and muddy after emerging through a rubbery tube thing at the end of the tunnel. That looks… quite unsafe, to be honest.
Brenda and Shannan are wading through the mud to get to the tunnels when first Shannan falls over and then Brenda falls over and hurts herself in the fall, in the same spot she hurt it in Switzerland. Shannan tells us she can’t afford injuries this close to Finale and injuring herself when there’s nothing but pride involved is just silly.
As Brenda and Shannan go through the “trauma tunnels” (think that’s what they’re calling them?) Shannan makes it through okay but Brenda panics a little about halfway through, thinking she can’t breath. But adrenaline keeps her going, she doesn’t want to come last and she’d love to catch up to the red girls.
As Alex and Steve get down to go under the cargo net Alex accidentally keeps his mouth open and swallows some of the disgusting muddy water. Steve calls him an idiot and gets him to keep going.
Tiff and Kasey are a long way behind by now so they’re just getting through the course and having fun. Good on them both!
They finally get to the cargo net and as Tiff starts to bend down to get under the net she topples over a bit and announces, “I’M IN!”
They can see Alex and Commando ahead. And hear Alex grunting and groaning. Game on, they’re going to catch up. Tiff smiles and nods in agreement.
The girls are playing smart and crawling side by side so they share the load of holding up the net. Then they’re off and into the running through mud section of the course.
Mish and Margie are up to some firemen who hose them down with some water from their engine.
Mish is instructing Margie on how to get up and over the cable spindles. Put your hands either side and swing your legs up and over and keep going. It’s like a crunch!
Margie follows suit and Mish is delighted by the success of her plan.
Brenda’s not having any troubles with it either, despite her bung hip. Shannan is very pleased by that, too.
Kasey learned not to follow other people’s tracks through the mud last time but Tiff didn’t get told that! But it was okay because Kasey lead them down the middle.
Time for Steve and Alex to go through the trauma tunnel. Steve makes it through and exclaims he’s been reborn. All he can hear from behind him is Alex hollering for help, over and over. Steve thought he was kidding but no, Alex was genuinely concerned.
Tiff makes it through the tunnel with obvious relief on her face. Kasey gets through without issue too.
Both teams go through the fire hoses and Tiff does a little twirl through them to get more of the mud off. Alex is just stoically slogging through.
Tiff and Kasey try to overtake Alex and Steve and so Steve, who tells us he knew they wouldn’t win today’s challenge, decides to slow them down a bit and tackles Tiff and Kasey both, dragging them to the ground and telling Alex to leg it.
Alex can’t get far, of course, because he’s attached to Steve!
Tiff and Kasey get up off the ground giggling a lot and quickly catching back up. Steve faces them as they come up behind and looks like he’ll try stopping them again but Tiff does some little ninja kicks in his direction then they just dodge around and run past. Funny stuff, good to see the trainers having fun with each other!
They’re about halfway through the course, Mish says. She thinks nobody will be able to catch up to them but she really thought Tiff and Kasey would be in second place, not Shannan and Brenda. And Shannan and Brenda really aren’t too far behind, either.
Margie can’t use the zip swing due to her bad back so Mish can’t use it either, they have to slide down into the river and swim across.
Shannan and Brenda have no such restriction. They can swing halfway across and then walk the rest of the way, so they can catch up some more here.
Brenda manages to get about halfway across before slipping off and Shannan wisely follows suit, rather than get dragged off the rope by Brenda’s falling weight.
Shannan and Brenda can see Mish and Margie up ahead and they can catch up to them, Shannan knows they can!
Shannan’s urging Brenda on, saying they’ll get bragging rights for the rest of the year and every calorie burnt here counts for the weigh in!
The slipperyslide is a bit dry when Margie and Mish try to go down so they’re dragging their butts down, looking like they have worms Margie says.
Shannan and Brenda get a bit more of a slide out of it but they were both disappointed it wasn’t more slippery. Brenda was looking forward to that all day!
Tiff and Kasey get to the swing bit and Kasey falls off earlier than Brenda did. Tiff doesn’t let go though and gets dragged backwards towards Kasey before letting go and taking her dunking. She gets up and moving quickly though.
Alex and Steve can’t do the swing either but Alex is determined to keep going, despite the huffing and puffing.
Tiff and Kasey are opening a big lead over them now.
Alex is clutching at his rib occasionally as he goes through the tires spread in front of the car they have to clamber through next.
Kasey and Tiff are going up a steep hill and Kasey says it’s much easier than back in week three now. She’d had to have two rest stops the first time around while Tiff hollered at her to start running. Kasey walked pretty much the entire course last time and this time around they didn’t stop jogging once.
Alex is breathing very heavily when they get to the top of the hill but Steve’s proud of Alex for not stopping once, despite how much it hurt.
Mish and Margie are up to the last mud bath before the end of the course. Mish says it’s big, it’s deep and it STINKS!
But they’re up and through it without any dramas and Margie pulls down the rope at the end… and a larger than life poster of Margie unfurls behind them.
It’s Margie from Day One and she’s gone, Mish says. She couldn’t’ve done that course like that.
Margie can barely look at her old self. She looked angry and miserable, she says. Not anymore!
Brenda says her poster looks really sad. She’s still got a little way to go but she’s well on the way.
Kasey says the person on the poster is the one who did the course last time. Very overweight, unhappy, no self confidence. She’s a completely different person now and she’ll never go back to being that person. She wants to live life now, not sit home on a couch.
Alex and Steve cross in last place but Alex still seems happy to have finished. He says the old Alex would have found an excuse not to do this, or just plain ran away. He’ll never be that guy again.
They’ve also got DVDs, it seems? I thought I saw Kasey with a DVD.
Bragging rights go to the Red girls, Margie and Mish. They get a Biggest Loser Valley Stampede bell. Ooooh.
Steve says they’ve been retired to the paddock and Mish shoots him a dirty look. Bwah!
Mish says she’s going to call Margie to training with her bell and Margie retorts that when she wants a cup of tea she’ll ring that at Mish.
A-ha! Yes, they all have DVDs of their audition tapes. Not a big deal for Brenda since she’s already seen that when she got eliminated!
On their DVDs are their pleas to be on the show and the old version of themselves and so on.
Hayley tells them all to head back to Camp, get cleaned up and then have a watch of their DVD. She’ll see them at the next weigh in.
They all sit in Loser Lounge to watch the DVDs. Margie kind of wants to use hers as a frisbee instead.
Kasey can remember her audition day and she doesn’t think she stopped crying in the whole thing. She’s going first!
Then we see her come up on the screen and DEAR GOD. The difference! She was so huge. Amazing how far she’s come.
She recalls being on a trail ride with 30-40 people and needing help to get up on her horse. Then one time she couldn’t even get up on her horse and she was so embarassed she couldn’t do it anymore.
She never had the confidence to go places with her friends. Tiff is shocked and asks Kasey if she remembers feeling like that? Kasey can remember it quite well.
Kasey even walked out of her audition thinking she’d made an idiot of herself and what would people think, etc.
They’ll think you’re awesome, Kasey!
She’s determined not to go back to that. Yeah yeah, she’s said that!
Alex’s turn next.
Jesus. Alex is still looking pretty overweight these days but the audition tape Alex is appalling. He’s just a huge round ball with a little knob of a head on top of the ball.
Everyone’s just staring in shock at the screen.
Alex says he got to about 135kg in his 20s or so, then he met a girl and got back down to 85kg and married her in 1985.
Awww!
Then they were divorced by 1993, he’s having a good chuckle about it. Steve asks him for his thoughts and Alex can’t think of anything to say.
Alex doesn’t know how he used to fool himself into thinking he was okay.
Brenda! Shannan is staring with his jaw hanging open. He wouldn’t’ve had much idea of this of course as Mish was originally Brenda’s trainer, met her at home and so on. Mish is also looking on with quite a bit of surprise though, she’d obviously forgotten how big she was too.
Shannan says there’s a big difference in the sparkle in her eyes now.
Margie can obviously barely believe it and has to look over at Brenda to check it’s the same person.
Brenda’s talking about not being able to have babies and Shannan says she was very honest in that interview.
Brenda was in a cycle of not losing the weight so getting stressed which didn’t help her lose weight, etc.
Brenda doesn’t want to be sad and miserable anymore.
Margie! Margie looks a little ill at seeing her old self.
Margie was having to lie about how she felt. She hadn’t told her best friend about how she was feeling or anything.
Margie was a big girl, Mish said. Margie says it was like there was no life in the old Margie. Margie can barely believe it’s her. She was missing out on so much in her life, not going out with friends, didn’t go to her niece’s wedding because she thought she was too fat to go, but she told the niece she had to work, so she was lying to people as well.
Margie knows she won’t go back to that because she loves herself too much to do that to herself again.
Mish says the Final Four have all stepped up. They’ve been brave, courageous and honest. They’re strong qualities, Mish says, the sort of things you try and instill into your children and these guys have them.
Sunday night. Cage match.
No, seriously, they’re getting the contestants to step into a cage and fight/spar. Tiff’s even going to bust out some ninja kicks into pads and stuff. Looks like fun!
And then, of course, the final weigh in at Camp.
And what happens next will be the biggest surprise of all, Mr Voiceover Man promises us!
Tomorrow night, more behind the scenes footage! Including Shannan and Steve doing the beep test!
Also, Margie has some pretty pictures of Mish in frames around her bed to go to sleep with at night. Bwahaha!
AND! The best of the outtakes from this season! Margie rolling down a hill while Shannan laughs his arse off. Commando Steve busting out some dance moves.
Should be a barrel of laughs!
