TBL 6×08: The Contest gives way to The Challenge and it’s stairiffic!
Previously on The Biggest Loser Leigh decided to stay with the show. The families all weighed in as a group to see how much they’ve lost so far and to show the family leaderboard.
Also, The Contest started once more. This time it’s weights. Endless repetitions of weights.
When we left last night Jarrod and Damien were doing battle in the final round…
… and that’s where we pick up. Jarrod coolly lifting weights, Damien mouthing off to us in the side bits about The Duncans being cocky.
Round 4 of The Contest sees the bars loaded up with 25kg. Jarrod is starting to do it a bit tougher now. Damien’s still soldiering on.
Both get to six but Jarrod barely makes it. Eight Jarrod struggles mightily. Nine. And Jarrod can’t quite make ten.
Damn. Damien wins.
His team congratulates him, followed by Hayley.
Challenors now get to call the shots. What power have they won?
They get to decide which family loses access to all the gyms and equipment until after the weigh-in.
But wait, there’s more!
The family that is chosen will only be able to eat chinese takeaway.
Erg, that’s low.
Hayley gives them the night to think about who they want to inflict their win on.
Trainers turn up and Michelle is without her team! Last time this happened it was because the missing team had won The Contest. Michelle’s happy they’ve finally won something.
Sarah then explains the penalty to the trainers, inducing much horror in the trainers… except Steve, who doesn’t seem worried in the slightest. He’d be just fine training them in a muddy paddock!
Damien asks Commando if he’d like chinese for lunch and he says no. Tiffiny is asked about no equipment? She says she’d be more concerned about the dim sims.
Shannan is asked how the Westrens would cope with it, having chinese. Shannan says Damien knows how hard it would be for anybody, he’s not playing games with you. Shannan clearly not impressed by Damien’s apparent glee.
Damien finally announces that he’s chosen the White Team, The Duncans. Tiffiny facepalm!
Nathaniel’s grinning like a right cunt.
Tiffiny tells them they’ll have to work hard with weigh-in only a few days away. But she has a plan up her sleeve.
But she’s wearing a tank top!
Tiff takes her team out to the parade ground. “This week we’re going to join the gym of life!”
“Red Team! You can have your steamed fish, you can have your grilled chicken, you can have your fresh veggies and salad. I don’t care, I’ve got ninjas!”
“We don’t need weights. We’ve got a Tiff!”
Tiff’s a goldmine of funny comments.
None of the Whites think there’ll be a problem, this is just a change of scenery. Tiff’s still working them super hard.
Part of their workout is climbing the stairs out the front repeatedly. Oh man, they’re going to be sick of that!
Michelle gets her team into training in a good mood, congratulating them all. She’s happy they’ve won something for a change but they’ve still got to use everything they’ve got and go hard into the coming week.
Damien’s still doing a lot of weight training. Joe and Nathaniel are as well but they’re working in some cardio in amongst it.
Mish says they’ve still got a few clouds hanging over their heads and those’ve got to be cleared up for them to keep pushing forward.
Joe and Greg have always clashed, he says to Michelle. He does love him, of course, he’s his brother, but they never say it. Say it out loud, Michelle says.
Joe doesn’t know how to do that though.
Michelle doesn’t want to lose anyone else.
So after an ad break they’re going on a ROAD TRIP! To go visit Greg and have a chat, it seems.
Oh, wait, no, first we have to watch Shannan and the Westrens get their training on. And probably Commando’s Moons!
The Westrens have 1 hour to complete 10km on the treadmill, 10km on the cross trainer, 10km on the bike, 1000 repetitions on the cardio gym and 2000 repetitions of various other exercises like crunches and pushups, between the entire group apparently.
Working individually, Shannan doesn’t think they could get it done. Working as a team, as they need to in the future, they should get it done.
Sharlene’s got some kind of injury and Craig’s still a little under the weather so Lara figures her and Leigh will have to really pull their weight today.
Shannan says looking into Sharlene’s eyes today showed a completely different side to her now. She’s got down to it and done it instead of just talking incessantly.
2km on the treadmill remain and Shannan’s hoping Leigh will step up and do it. He’s the only one with the speed in his legs to get it done. Lara tells us Shannan wants Leigh to be the strongest on the team and she’s got no doubt he will be.
Shannan puts the treadmill on 13km/hr and Leigh stuck with it, no giving up, because he knows his family is relying on him. Leigh says it’s a lot easier with Shannan in his face shouting. He’d’ve probably given up without Shannan.
With seconds to go Leigh completes the final metres and everyone is very proud of themselves. Leigh and Shannan hug afterwards. Aww!
Okay, now it’s time for the ninjas to eat chinese food!
Tiff says she knew something would come up at some point and if it’s only chinese food they can deal with it.
Tiff recalls how much The Duncans love convenience food. Tiff wants to show them they can still eat that sort of convenient meal, but make much smarter choices.
What would they usually order? Sweet and sour pork, honey chicken, MONGOLIAN LAMB (omnomnom), satay chicken and noodles are the four brought up. Tiff says the meats aren’t so bad it’s the sauces, they add sugar to the sauce.
Tiff tells them that vegetarian meals are really good options because they’re usually lower in calories. There’s a veggie omelette and you could request that be made with egg whites instead.
Getting chicken? Wash the chicken. Get the sodium and sauce off it and it’ll be better for you. She tells us there’s ways that it can be made healthier.
Sarah-Jayne says it doesn’t look like the chinese they’d ordinarily order but they all think it looks pretty good and tastes good, too. They can get through it for a week, they say.
Next morning everyone piles into the cars and heads off to ANZ Stadium for the Challenge.
Leigh’s super impressed by it being the place they held the Olympics. I’m less impressed by the patchy looking grass that hasn’t been laid too well!
There’s no Red flags set up in the area the Challenge will take place which has people a little curious. Of course if you’ve been watching the episode up till now you already know it’s because Red are going on a road trip!
Hayley’s there to explain the challenge. They have to climb a flight of 60 stairs 100 times.
Emma says they don’t normally walk stairs, The Duncans. They’re a lift family.
The winner of the challenge will get a 2kg weight advantage into the next weigh in. Tiff says to her team that they really need that!
Sharlene and Nathaniel both have injuries that prevent their participation today. So to even the teams up the Duncans and Moons will have to choose one contestant to sit out.
But The Challenors will only have two people as a result. And as such they’ve been ruled out.
But that’s okay! Michelle has other plans for them.
Rather than being at the Challenge, she has something really important for them. Mish knew in advance that her team would be ruled out and it’s fine by her. They’ve got something more important to deal with.
Sarah-Jayne’s sitting out. Or, as Tiff calls her, “Cheerleader!”
Sarah’s sitting out for The Moons. Big surprise there!
White’s strategy is to go hard from the start, getting an early lead via Jarrod.
The Westrens just want to win something!
Steve tells us his Mums had last walked these stairs to buy their husbands beers and hotdogs. Sounds like they’ve already been trained well!
The Moons are doing one lap at a time per person while both Westrens and Duncans are doing multiples each time.
Cue swap to Challenors!
Michelle’s not wearing her seatbelt properly. FOR SHAME, MISH! Bad example!
They start recognising where they are as they’re driving along and the boys think they’re just there for a visit but Mish thinks they should be there to apologise. Family is more important than the game.
Greg comes and answers the door and is stunned by his brothers and nephew being at the door.
Damien says to Greg that they as a team hung him out to dry. Either himself or Nathaniel should have at least offered themselves. Damien’s there to say sorry. Nathaniel says they stuffed up and took Greg for granted. Awww! Tears!
Joe then reveals he clapped when Rebecca came back from elimination rather than Greg. He says they’ve always struggled but it’s time to turn a new leaf.
They went as a family and they ended up tearing each other apart, Damien says.
Mish also pointed out that none of them hugged Greg after the weigh-in. Greg’s a little upset about it. He felt a bit like a stranger, but Damien says he’s not a stranger, he’s my brother and he loves him. Awww!
Joe says he’s his brother too, and he loves him too. AWWWW!
Greg’s very emotional at this point. Damien asks for forgiveness and Greg says there’s nothing to forgive – he accepts their apology, but there’s nothing that needs forgiving. “These guys mean the world to me, even though we fight and carry on and we might act like a bunch of women but these guys mean more to me than anything else.”
As they all head back to the car there’s hugs all round. Awwww!
Greg says he felt much better after the apologies and the love. It touched his heart to hear them say it for the first time in a long time.
And we’re back to the contestants trying to run 6,000 stairs!
Commando says you’ve got to remember that his girls are obese women and they’re asking a lot of them.
Tiff loves how close the competition is so far.
The Westrens are planning to have Leigh and Lara do most of the running with Craig chipping in from time to time. He can’t do too many of the laps due to low blood pressure but Shannan wants him to jog up and down if he’s going to do it because if he won’t, Leigh and Lara will.
Rebecca’s struggling, breathing hard and her feets are burning.
Leigh’s hurting as well. At the 22 lap mark. Oooh, this is going to hurt.
Jodie’s doing a few more of the laps than the other two Moons. Steve says she’s felt more pain than this and Jodie says yes, in childbirth. Steve says exactly. He needs her to be a hero today.
Tiff’s running up beside Meg shouting GIRL POWER at one point. And they’re doing their counting in whatever foreign language it is. Korean? I’m not sure. I don’t recognise the numbers.
After another run Craig says the last time he ran up stairs like that would have been 30 years ago. Shannan’s got him sitting down afterwards and getting him to breathe in through his nose and out through his mouth, slower, take it easy, etc.
Craig wants to do at least one more lap because they’re a team and he doesn’t want to let them down.
Tiff’s still running up the stairs, daring Meg to catch up to her. Tiff says Meg didn’t like walking more than 3 steps to the fridge – their fridge is in the lounge room so she can get more beer.
She doesn’t like to move and now she’s running up and down steps? Tiffiny is so proud of Meg,
Westrens and Duncans are level pegging at 40 laps with the Moons a ways behind on 32.
Rebecca does another lap and she says her body was in shock and as she gets down to the bottom she flops onto the grass and one of the crew hold an umbrella over her and have a chat with her. Steve gets down to have a chat with her, too. He tells her that Jodie’s having a go right now but he wants Rebecca to get back up and do another lap, even if she has to walk it.
Steve can see they want to throw in the towel a couple of times but it’s about a team effort. They all need to be there for the next person to get through this challenge. And after a few more motivational words in her ear, Rebecca sets off up the stairs at a steady jog once more. She does slow down after about half the steps but it’s still a good turn around.
Jodie’s still pushing hard as they hit 51 laps and as she comes down again she misses a step and goes over on her good ankle, she says. Ouch, that could be a problem for her team as she’s clearly doing most of the laps.
After an ad break Jodie is on the ground getting examined by the medic and there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with her ankle. Steve says to her that he thinks it was more of a fright than anything else and Jodie agrees and gets back on the horse.
Or the stairs, at any rate!
Tiff says Meg’s hurting and her lungs are tight but nothing’s stopping her, she’s a changed woman on a mission!
There’s a lot of talk from all the contestants about having never pushed themselves so hard before in their lives and lots of people falling to the ground after their turn up the stairs.
Craig says as you run up and down the stairs you could feel the sun beating down on you and you get to the bottom and you just can’t cool down.
Craig does another lap and collapses onto the grass. Leigh’s sure at this point that Craig won’t be able to do anymore so it’s down to him and Lara versus The Duncans three.
Lara’s doing it really tough now too. She says when she gets to the bottom one more time she’s seeing stars and has to sit down and catch her breath.
But if she can’t get back up, Leigh will have to do the whole thing.
Annnnnnnnnnd Sunday night we find out who wins. Dangit!
But there’ll also be a weigh-in where Joe will talk about his daughter (?) and Red will live in fear of going to Elimination twice in a row. Should be fun!
