TBL 5×65: Final Masterclass for this year!

Tonight on The Biggest Loser the contestants come full circle! They’re doing some training of other people, learning how their Bio Age has changed, some more cooking with Janella and…

BOB! Bob’s coming back for a chat to the few contestants remaining. We love you Bob!

Last Masterclass, Lisa says. She’s loved them all though. They’ve learned so much and met so many wonderful people.

So they’re spending a training session outdoors. They’re doing it with Michelle and a special guest trainer.
The training today has been around since the 1920s. Pilates! It’s good for flexibility, core strength, posture and balance.
Today’s special trainer is Rachel Crompton. Former professional ballet dancer, has danced at the Moulin Rouge and dancers like using pilates for rehabilitation after injuries.

Rachel teaches them how to get the right upright posture for starting in pilates.

They have “pilates beds” to lie on. They slide back and forth with springs providing resistance.
Michelle’s doing the exercises with them today while Rachel gives them all pointers. Very complicated pointers I’m not explaining. Sorry!

Lots of them are finding this “pilates” workout quite strenuous. It’s quite strenuous on the mind, nevermind your body!

Pilates lady says sitting at your computer for more than 20 minutes at a time is bad for you, your muscles switch off and you start losing some of your balance and agility and so on.
So sitting here for about 90 minutes watching TV and writing a recap is not good for me? Meh, I rode more than 10km on my bike today, cram it lady!

The contestants head back inside to meet Dr Swan for the last time again.
Way back at the beginning they measured a bunch of things for each of the contestants so now they’re going to see how they’re going.
Paul Taylor is also back. He’s been doing the measurements for their bio age.

But first we get to see Lisa’s DEXA Scan? At the start she was about 50% body fat and there was lots of yellow on the picture which I guess is the fat? Then in her newer scan there’s way less yellow and she’s down to 30% body fat.
Paul says the healthy percentage for women is usually late teens to early twenties, men should be around the mid-teens.

Some other key figures on Lisa? Her strength has improved 300%. Plank test went to 3mins 7secs, from a mere 25secs! Dr Swan says he himself can’t do 30 seconds!

Lisa’s original Bio Age was 50. Current one is 35. Her actual age is 41, so she’s well ahead!

Shannon’s turn now. Shannon’s scan didn’t turn out so well on account of the immense amount of fat he was carrying. 51.2% body fat at the start.
The difference is amazing. He’s down to 34% body fat, which means he has a way to go but it’s a vast improvement.
Prior to starting his glucose was in the “pre-diabetic” range. It’s now perfect at 4.3.

Dr Swan says the best indicator is your waist circumference. It’s always a good indicator of your risks of heart disease and diabetes. 94cm or more means you’re at risk, apparently.
Shannon was 189cm at the start. Dr Swan had to actually walk around him to measure him. He was actually further around than he was tall.
He’s now down to 123cm, so he’s well on the way to his 94cm.
Chrono age is 24. Original bio age was 48. Current bio age is 30. Very good!

Daina’s body fat percentage was at 41% on coming onto the show. 27.9% body fat now.
Her cardiovascular fitness has improved by 55%, which is a huge improvement.

How old is Daina, now. Chrono, she’s 24. No, 25, had a birthday!
Original bio age: 31
New bio age: 22!

Joe’s blood pressure was 167/84, which was hypertensive. Almost dead man walking. It’s now down to 115/68. Dr Swan says he’s lowered his risks of heart attack and stroke significantly and immediately.
152cm waist to 95cm waist. Which is right about where he should be.
He’s 21 now but original bio age was 35 and now his bio age is 20!

Wayne started at 35% body fat, down to 22% body fat now.
His cholesterol levels are much, much better than they were.
Original bio age was 57. Chrono he’s 43. New bio age: 39! He’s stoked too.

Phil’s last. Phil’s glucose went from a “skerrrrrrrry” 6.8 down to 5.1 which is great, apparently.
44 chrono, 59 original bio… current: 39! Same as Wayne.

Paul says they can maintain that, too. Just eat well and keep getting out there and doing the exercise.

Janella’s in the kitchen. Today she has a lasagne! It’s an unhealthy one, of course!
Instead they’re going to cook a nice, healthy vegetarian lasagne. At least this is a one for one replacement!
Janella calls Phil up to help her today because she’s missed him. Awwww!
Janella says she’s going to fatten him up… not really!
Joe says she should, fatten him up lots!

Lots of cooking going on. You know the drill. Not describing the recipe.

Next dish is a butter chicken with lots of rice. About 600 calories. Much from the white rice and the fat. Not many healthy calories in it.
So they’re going to make a thai style seafood curry instead.

MOAR COOKING!

Next meal. Steak. Mmmm, steak. Wayne’s favourite. Wayne asks if she needs him to taste it. But no. It has 700 calories.
Wayne’s still tempted though.

Joe’s going to help cook this time but he says he can’t taste due to being on a strict diet. Probably a no-food-at-all diet to try and beat Phil?

Janella has Joe “peel” a sweet potato with a peeler to make some “chips” to go in the oven. Nifty idea!

Janella gives the steak a minute on each side. A minute! There’s still visible pink bits. It creeps me out.

Then it’s time to say goodbye to Janella, awwww! Hayley says goodbye and thankyou on behalf of everyone who’s been through the doors. She’ll miss Janella and they look forward to catching up at Finale!

And after the ads, the last chance to win the Masterclass trophy!

Hayley and Michelle are waiting for the contestants on the parade ground.
Week in, week out they’ve been trained by the best in the business. But today they won’t be the learners, they’ll be the instructors!

They’ll each take a different activity for which they’ll need to plan a 30 minute workout with their class.
Shannon has boxing, Daina has circuit training, Lisa has spinbikes, Phil’s running calisthenics, Wayne’s coaching AFL football on the oval (which he thinks means he’ll definitely win this!) and Joe’s running a Boot Camp!

Their guest trainees aren’t novices, they’ve been doing their exercises for a while and they’re taking the classes they love to take. They’re coming expecting a proper workout.
There’ll be a professional trainer assigned to each class to keep an eye on them and to report to Michelle as she wanders around to check everyone out. Ultimately it’s Michelle who’ll decide who wins this week.

Shannon says some of his group are amateur boxers (in the sense of competing as such) but he’s in charge today and he’s letting them know it!
Shouting a lot and giving them all instruction on how to work out.
Shannon says that he thinks some of them weren’t really expecting such a hard workout, but he’s pushing them really hard.

Shannon tells us that if you put the work in you can go from a 214kg couch potato to someone teaching ten professional fighters how to train.

Daina’s got her circuit setup. She’s confident in her routine but not sure how well she’s going to be able to instruct them.
She’s mostly taking a softlysoftly approach, wandering around giving them pointers and doing some exercises with the various people.
Michelle comes in and says she’s doing okay at the setup stuff but less well at being the motivator for the group.

Phil’s got his people doing lots of running around and doing burpies and so on. Hard stuff!
But Phil’s keeping up with them for the most part, so he’s really happy.
Phil’s taken some leaves out of The Commando’s book. He’s got them doing leopard crawls among other things now.

Joe’s got his group on the “Avenue of Honours”, the trail that was built in the memory of the World War I guys who used to work there.
Joe’s not slacking off at all, he’s getting right in there with the trainees, matching them stride for stride while carrying logs down the trail and up the stairs and carrying sandbags around. All the trainees are giving glowing reviews of the workout.
His supervisor girl says he’s a good role model because he’s getting in there and doing it himself. He’s keeping them all motivated and the boys looked up to him for it. He’s a man of few words but those words were always important and clear and you know what he wants out of you.
They end up dragging a sled made out of the logs and sandbags and with the supervisor lady standing atop it!
One of the trainees said that he didn’t think Joe would be up to the training himself but he was leading from the front all through the session.

Michelle’s really impressed when she sees Wayne doing his AFL training.
Whoever the supervisor is must be involved in an AFL team as he says Wayne’s got the makings of a good coach and if there’s a spot available for him they’ll be seeing if he can fill that role because he has the enthusiasm and he knows his footy.
Their training session finishes off with a slow lap of the field and his boys say he did quite well getting in there with them.

Lisa’s a little iffy on taking the spin class because it’s a lot like public speaking, something she was never very comfortable with before.
She gets stuck into one of the guys up the back for not cycling all the time from the start. You never stop in a spin class!
She gets them all to do a 1km sprint to start with and one of her peeps says she’s did well with her bubbly personality and keeping everyone motivated.
Lisa says that when she arrived at Camp she couldn’t imagine anyone wanting to do spin cycling… now she loves it.
Michelle comes in for a visit and she’s amazed at how well her class is doing. They’ve all got a great workout and they’ve had a good time doing it.

They all head back to the parade ground to find out who won!
Joe’s still all grubby from getting down amongst it.
Michelle says it got harder and harder and harder to choose, the more classes she saw.
But what she saw was some really passionate people, which is what it takes to motivate people and get them going.
But the other factor she took into account was the “X Factor”. That’s when she walks in and she wants to be part of what’s going on and that happened with… Joe’s Boot Camp training!

After Joe claims the shield Michelle says she’s not even a dirt kind of girl!

And after another ad break it’s back to the big gym where Shannan and Michelle are waiting for them.
Michelle says that the big challenge is when you leave Camp and get back into your regular lives. Mentally you’ve got the tools, you just need to maintain the discipline.
So for the last Masterclass talk they’ve brought in someone who is very close to Shannan and Michelle.

The last person they’re bringing in is Bob, winner of last year’s Biggest Loser.
And… wow, he’s still looking great.
They roll down the poster of what he looked like before coming on the show and it’s just like looking at an entirely different guy.
Back on his Day One Bob went down hard on the beach and he looked at Shannan and made a decision. He could stay down on the beach and give up. Or he could get back up and never go down again.
And he made the choice to get up. He’d realised how unfit he was and he couldn’t let it end like that. He had to turn his life around. He couldn’t see how he’d get there but he knew he had to begin the journey.

Michelle says the fear is always that you’ll put the weight back on after the show. But Bob’s still around his final weigh-in weight. 80-85kg. He fluctuates a little, but that’s normal!

Bob says the main thing he wasn’t prepared for was how many people had watched his journey and he’s met so many people who’ve come up to him and talked about how much he’s inspired them. And now he can’t go back because it would let those people down. You owe it to your family and loved ones, too. And for yourself.

Bob hasn’t had a sick day since leaving the show, so he’s doing a lot better than before he came on the show. He was always feeling crap on and off, but now he’s always feeling full of energy.

Bob says the detractors say it’s really unhealthy to lose so much weight so quickly but you know what? He feels fantastic! So don’t believe it.

Bob says when they go home they need to recognise that they’ve changed, they’re different people now and they need to accept that. But they’re going home to the people that are special to them and with their newfound health and strength they’ll be able to enjoy those relationships so much more.

Wayne says it’s a bit of a worry that without a goal like the marathon it will be harder for him and Bob says you absolutely do need to keep setting goals in your life and keep striving to achieve them.

Then Hayley, Janella and Dr Swan come back into the Big Gym to have a bit of a chat about how far they’ve all come and to wish them good luck.
Dr Swan says the five successful tips are: weigh yourself daily, keep a food diary, calorie control, exercise daily (45mins-1hour) and don’t change your diet on the weekends!

Shannan says that he and Michelle know this stuff works and he’s been proud to be part of the Masterclasses this year. They’ve covered all the bases and they’ve all been armed with the necessary tools to continue it on the outside.
Good luck everyone… but now Masterclass is done for the year!

Weigh-in is coming up so train hard and see what happens…

6.30pm Sunday Night it’s the final day at Camp Biggest Loser. Only one Castaweight will survive and then the very last weigh-in determines this year’s Final Four.
Straight elimination of the smallest Loser or what? Hmmmmmmmm.
