TBL 5×53: Cycling and Swimming with CHAMPIONS
Previously on The Biggest Loser the Desert Rats were revealed and Shannon scored Immunity thanks to Phoebe and Lisa being silly buggers an eliminating each other in the Challenge!
Tonight some spin bike challenge car headlights going off thing.
Also, back in the desert, Phil and Joe cop yet another flogging from The Commando. There’s a shocker!
Michelle and Shannan rock up to Camp again, wondering what’s happened since last they were there.
Everyone’s actually present and so on, so no surprises there…
But Shannon’s excited to tell Shannan that he finally won a Challenge for once!
Shannan’s slowly getting his voice back. It’s still a bit husky at the moment though.
Shannan’s really excited about Shannon winning Immunity via winning the Challenge. It’s only the second challenge he could even compete in, his injuries are getting better and the restrictions he’s under for training are being lifted day by day.
Michelle says the special training session they have planned today will leave their heads spinning… so to speak. Hmmm.
They head to The Warehouse. There’s a lady standing in front of four vehicles. Honda Civic hybrids, Phoebe says. There’s a spin cycle in front of each car.
The lady standing around in her cycling gear is “Australia’s Premier Cyclist” Rochelle Gilmore. She’s going for Gold at the Commonwealth Games this year.
She’s going to share a little bit of her experience during the training session today.
As they pedal the spinbikes it’ll power up the headlights. So they can see when they’re working hard at pushing and when they’re not pushing hard.
Rochelle says she typically does 4-6 hour training sessions and the session she’ll be taking them through is the sort of thing she’d do normally. It’ll be hard, it’ll take a lot of mental strength, but they’re going to do it together!
They work with RPMs on the spinbikes, apparently. They’re aiming for 75 RPM today as a warmup and it’s quite challenging to get to that and hold it, Lisa says.
The RPMs are based on how many times the pedals turn over, apparently.
The first sprint is to get them to hit 100 RPM. Michelle sounds a little doubtful at that suggestion but Rochelle says they can do it and they all manage to push above the 100 RPM mark with room to spare, even Lisa who can’t stand on the bike due to her moonboot!
Rochelle’s drills today are the secret to her being able to power home at the end of a long race. Exactly the kind of training they need coming up on their 42km Marathon run.
Their next effort is to stay above 120 RPM for two entire minutes. Yikes!
Rochelle’s keeping it up there really easily, of course. Phoebe’s up above 130 RPM to begin with and they get her to back off a little since she’s got to keep going for two whole minutes.
Shannan’s shocked at that simply being the warmup. He’s obviously impressed by their efforts.
Rochelle’s still speaking strongly and barely seems out of puff, extremely impressive!
The last challenge is a competition against each other.
130 RPM. For four minutes. If you go below 130 RPM, you’re out!
Lisa’s managing to hit 130 RPM even with the moon boot on and Shannan says her tenacity continues to impress him.
Shannon and Lisa both go out first but Phoebe and David are still slugging it out. Shannan says the odds are stacked against Phoebe since her legs are tiny and David’s legs are huge. But Phoebe’s not going to give in!
One minute left. Should we raise the bar? Because it looks like both of them are actually going to make the time limit!
So they raise it to 140 RPM.
Then they’re both still staying strong with 30 seconds to go, so they up it to 150 BPM.
Phoebe can’t even get to that, so David wins sort of by default…
David says it was a good feeling to win but he’s had a lot more time on the spinbikes than everyone else. And practice makes perfect!
David tells Phoebe well done and Phoebe says he was the better man on the day, but she’ll get him yet! And David says he knows she will!
Rochelle says it’s great to see they all like the pain so she thinks they’ll nail the 42km marathon.
They all wish her good luck at the Commonwealth Games at the end of the training session. GO FOR GOLD!
Commando Steve has a truck. He drives up to the lads and hops out and yells at them to get the four drums from around the big dusty junk site they’re at. Put the four drums in a decent sized square.
Now. All the junk that’s in the square – wheels, spools of wire, hunks of metal – needs to be shifted outside the square.
Fun!
Phil’s worried about brown snakes and redback spiders and who knows what else buried amongst the junk.
What they’ve cleared out is actually part of a concrete slab. Which will be their new training area, of course!
Shifting all the junk was merely the warmup.
Joe says he’s never seen a guy like Steve in his life, the guy’s got a screw loose he reckons!
Next up they grab some bars off the ground. Steve says they seem really light now but wait till the end of the training session.
Phil’s having a great deal of trouble following the instructions but Steve eventually yells at him enough until he gets it right.
Then they carry the bar up and down the concrete slab while it rests across their shoulders. Hard stuff.
At the end of the session Steve reminds them that they’re in a competition and they need to be training as hard as they can, especially after a fairly mediocre result at the last weigh-in.
Freshen up and he’ll see you at the next weigh-in!
Back at Camp Loser Shannan’s wandered into the kitchen for a chat with the remaining contestants about nutrients and how important nutrition is to their weightloss and general wellbeing.
Shannan suggests they supplement with a multivitamin on the outside. At the moment they’re in a tightly controlled environment but on the outside they might not get quite as much as they need out of their diet.
After an ad break the contestants are all sitting in the lounge room when Hayley walks in. She tells them to grab their togs, they’ve got something very special in store.
They turn up at the Manly swimming pool and Lisa realises they’re going to get to go swimming with Hayley Lewis! Not many people get to do that!
Hayley says they’re aware of the benefits of swimming for their physical fitness. Because you use so many of the muscle groups in the body it’s also good for toning your body.
Swimming burns up to 300 calories every 30 minutes, Hayley says. Plus swimming is fun!
Hayley’s got seperate workout programs for Lisa, Phoebe and David. Phoebe’s also got flippers, but I gather they’re all confident swimmers.
But Hayley’s mostly going to work with Shannon as he has a really intense fear of swimming. Hayley’s never worked with someone who has that big a fear of swimming before. But she says he seems very open to the whole learning process.
Dude, he’s getting trained by a bloody legend! He’d better be okay with it!
She’s going through the basics with him first. She’s holding a kickboard on one side while Shannon paddles along behind it while holding on.
He’s doing pretty well, all told.
Shannon says he’ll never forget this moment for the rest of his life. It’s something money can’t buy.
Hayley says she’s so proud of Shannon and Shannon has to laugh. Think he’s amazed at someone like that being proud of him.
They progress to Hayley holding his hands while Shannan kicks along still.
Then Hayley asks him if he’d be okay with trying a half lap by himself and he says he’s happy to have a go!
Pretty amazing for a guy who was really not very comfortable with water at all before!
Hayley’s clearly stoked by how well he’s picked it up. She thanks him a lot, saying it was just as fantastic for her to get to see him overcome the difficulties and swim for himself. They hug in the pool while everyone else is still paddling away.
Everyone else is proud of Shannon for learning how to swim and Hayley says thanks to everyone afterwards for letting her do this with them. They thank her in return and Hayley says she’ll be coming down to Victoria to continue Shannon’s lessons!
Dude! That’s a pretty dang awesome offer!
Tomorrow night, is David buckling under the pressure? Looks like he might be…
And.. a weigh-in, too? Is that right? Weigh-ins are Sundays! Hmm.
