TBL 5×45: Day One in New Zealand involves abseiling. Abseiling is fun!

Previously on Biggest Loser Rick got sent home after gaining weight at the weigh-in and losing his Immunity as a result.
He passed on the Gold Bracelet to David and the contestants hopped on a plane shortly thereafter to go to New Zealand!

Tonight they’re going to do some abseiling off a cliff. Abseiling is fun so this should go down without a hitch… right?

But first, a bushwalk. They’ve all got proper hiking sticks to hike through the bush to meet Michelle and Shannan.
Shannan says their adventure starts today!

They’re at Peehar Canyon (?) at KittyKitty Falls (?!). Shannan says not to let the name fool them!

Michelle tells us that today’s challenge is about stepping into the new way of life, new behaviour patterns and the way their future will look for them now.

The four contestants will be aseiling over the edge. Shannon, David and Phoebe all burst out laughing. Lisa looks scared. She clings to Phoebe and says she’s going to die!
It’s a vertical drop of 18 metres.

But that’s not the only drop. The next drop is 4 metres. Not so bad!
The drop after that? Vertical. 48 metres. Weeee!

Total of 70 vertical metres, Shannan says. And he says their new bodies are capable of getting down the cliff. But that’s not what will get them there, it’ll be their minds. Their minds telling them to lean away from the cliff face.
Phoebe flails her hands in the air in an after-interview.

Shannan asks them all what they think?
David, Shannon and Phoebe all say bring it on! Lisa says she’ll probably be sick but yeah, bring it on!

Shannon’ll be first down though. I guess they figure he’ll provide the most cushioning at the bottom if he falls and others follow him in falling…
Shannon says he had a thought of, “Well, if I die, at least it’s in a really nice place!”

At the top of the cliff Shannon admits he’s petrified and it’s daunting looking down there, but that’s what they’re here for!
Shannan says he’s so different to the guy Shannan met on the first day. Walking down very surefooted and stuff.
Shannan asks him if he’s willing to leave the old person behind at the top of the cliff and Shannon doesn’t even hesitate. He’s absolutely ready to leave his old self behind. Good lad!

Shannan tells Shannon to have a look back over the edge at the 18 metre drop and Shannon says it seems even bigger when you’re leaning back over it.

As Shannon starts abseiling down he says the biggest concern for him is that he might still be too big. He’s worried about the harness holding his weight and the ropes might break but Shannan says that while Shannon’s legs were trembling he was doing it just fine because of the change in his mental attitude.

Phoebe’s turn next and I think they probably could have found a better fitting helmet…
Michelle says Phoebe’s had weight issues for so long on top of all the usual teen angst stuff.
Michelle has seen the battles over weight and health and fitness in families before and it causes lots of dramas and conflicts. That’s why they call them battles, Michelle!

Then Phoebe starts heading over the edge backwards. She’s doing okay though. She says to Michelle that she’s shaking like a leaf but she’s getting there!

Lisa’s turn. She looks down and asks again how tall it is. 18 metres!
She tries backing away a bit and Shannan says not to back away, come back here!
So what’s brought her to this point? She wants a life again.
She’d come on the show thinking her life was a neat little package, but it was a BIG package.
Shannan says she’s going to leave all those feelings up the top of the cliff.

As Lisa looks backwards over the cliff she asks Shannan how deep the water is?!
Shannan says it’s not the water she needs to worry about!
Shannan asks her how she’s feeling and she says she’s feeling good. Okay.
Then she starts leaning to her left and we go to an ad break as she pendulums off to the side and hits the rock face. Ouch!

After the ad break she’s giggling at running into the wall. Shannan instructs her on how to get back onto her feet. No mean feat when abseiling!

She finally gets to the bottom of the first drop and squeals “oh my god I made it!” She hadn’t realised how close to the bottom she already was!

David was doing the exercise and the nutrition at the start but he’s finally getting the idea that it’s a whole life change thing.
David’s had a lot of issues, he says. His Dad died when David was 17, just before he went to University. He’d tried to be strong for his Mum but after a couple of months at Uni he self-destructed.
David doesn’t like the thought of leaving his own children in the same fashion. He wants to have the time with his kids he didn’t get with his Dad.

David’s a powerhouse going down the first cliff. He’s actually outstripping Michelle and getting a little cocky. He finally overbalances and crashes into Michelle but they’re both okay. And David’s having a great time!

Shannan’s helmet cam is looking at Shannon who can’t keep the grin off his face as they prepare for the final dropoff. Shannon’s looking forward to it. Shannan says it’s three times the height of the first drop and Shannon says that’s okay, just means it’ll take a little longer!
Shannon says that if this is what life feels like he’s ashamed he’s missed out on it for 24 years.

Finally Shannon’s had enough talking and starts urging Shannan to get them under way.

About halfway down the cliff Shannon locks himself off and asks Shannan to just have a look around at how amazing everything looks.
Shannon says everyone who knows him will be saying holy crap at him abseiling 70 metres!
Shannon says if this is Day One of the adventure bring on the rest of the week!
They have a look up the cliff from the pool at the bottom and Shannon’s super happy to be in his new life.

Phoebe’s sad the abseiling has to end so soon. Today’s a pretty good day!
Michelle tells Phoebe she’s an amazing girl, she can do anything!

As Michelle and David head down the cliff while David talks about becoming the new him, Michelle’s not wearing gloves. Tsk tsk tsk!

Lisa has a look around as she gets ready to abseil down and realises she pretty much has to go down the rest of the way now because there’s no way she could climb back up out of there!
Lisa wants to cry partway down again because of how beautiful the scenery is.

Shannan says he and Michelle are so proud of the contestants. All of them made it to the bottom which is great to see.

“Feel alive, Shannan. I feel alive.” – David

Phoebe says she’s ready to take on the next challenge, it’s character building. She’s ready to give it a go!

Tomorrow night, next stage of their adventure. It involves a sailing boat, climbing the rigging, jumping in the water and probably some other tomfoolery. Cool!
