TBL 5×29: Head to Head Contest Night

Previously on The Biggest Loser the contestants were preparing for a head to head contest…

Tonight on The Biggest Loser, the head to head contests begin!
The losing Losers face the rest of the week without access to their trainers. The winning Losers get… Don’t know. Mr Voiceover Man was not forthcoming on that issue.

The contestants catch a ride in the cars to the Sydney Olympic Centre. Which they all think is a pretty cool place to be going for the day.
Hayley seems quite pleased to be there. Of course it’s not really anything new for her!

The contestants will have to perform like an athlete to come out on top today.
But as they know, they’re in head to head mode this week. And today it’s time for the showdown!

As stated at the top of the show, the losers will not have access to their training. Between now and the weigh-in they won’t have access to the gym, the equipment or their trainers.
Ouch! That’s even more harsh than previous years where they simply stripped them of trainers.

As David has immunity he can’t get stripped of his training tools, nor does he have to compete today.

Phoebe and Shannon will be the first pairing to face off. Ten minute gym cardio showdown. The person who’s done the most number of reps, overall, will be the winner.
Shannon says that as close as he is to Phoebe he won’t be laying down. He won’t risk his spot for anyone!

Phoebe’s struggling pretty hard from the start while Shannon’s powering them out. Most people are cheering for Phoebe it seems. But she’s quite a bit behind early on. However Shannon’s gone out hard so he might begin slowing down…

Halfway mark and Phoebe’s at 296 reps while Shannon’s on 330. Phoebe’s slowly drawing back the gap. She’s slowly clawing back some reps during certain stages that Shannon’s not going so well with.
Hayley’s about the only one encouraging Shannon. Though he says he couldn’t really hear anyone while the competition was going.

656 reps for Shannon, 589 for Phoebe. So Phoebe will be without her training stuffs.
She’ll be okay, methinks. Shannon will make less use of the gym than Phoebe will of non-gym-activities.

Rick and Caitlin face off on the spin bikes, next. It’s clocking up as many kilometres as you can in 10 minutes. So Rick would seem to have an advantage in this challenge.
Caitlin says it’s not in her nature to just roll over and let someone beat her, she’d prefer to go out and give it a go.
Rick’s a bit nervous as he knows Caitlin usually does fairly well on the spin bikes.

Caitlin’s pacing herself early on while Rick goes pretty hard right from the start.
Early on Caitlin is only 300m behind, probably by virtue of good, steady pace.
Hayley’s telling them both to think of something else, suck it up, somewhere in your body you’ve got a reserve of energy, time to use it!

Caitlin’s at 3km at one point while Rick is at 3.4km. Rick’s still going along at a good clip while Caitlin maintains her same steady pace.
Last 30 seconds and Caitlin starts groaning while spinning the pedals around faster. Rick carries on pedalling and I think he’s probably got her beat…
Yup. 8.6km to Caitlin’s 7.4km. So he opened up an even bigger gap in the end.

Phil and Joe’s battleground is the treadmill. Every minute the speed will increase by 1km/hr and the winner will be decided by who can last the longest. Ouch!

Phil’s listening to Joe’s footfalls which he thinks are very heavy so he feels like he’s in with a chance.
And he looks to be right as Joe is struggling fairly early on while Phil is managing to keep a very steady pace.
When they hit 13km/hr Joe says he’s fading a bit. Phil’s soldiering on, however!

Joe is struggling hard after the ad break and finally hops off. Phil pumps his fist in the air and says go the doggies, this is for you Memphis and Mav.

Lisa and Jarna will be going head to head on the rowing machines. First to row to 2.5km wins!
The girls have only ever done about 500m in training before.

The girls have an agreement to just go as hard as they can. So should be a lot of competition here.
Lisa’s not doing it so hard because she’d had her family visit where she’d gone kayaking.
Jarna gets coached by Caitlin telling her to go for long strong strokes as they get you further.

Lisa 1140m.
Jarna 1010m.

Jarna starts to lose it a bit, can’t get comfortable on the rowing seat. She asks Rick why her shoulders are hurting.
Uhh, because you’re using them, nimrod.

… and now Lisa’s encouraging her to just relax and get into it.

Lisa eventually wins, unsurprisingly.
But they’re both quite emotional at the end of it all.

Shannon, Lisa, Rick and Phil end up as the winners. They can keep on with their intense training regimes. And get their pick of who to have for Last Chance Training.
Caitlin, Joe, Phoebe and Jarna lose all access to all training facilities and any time with their trainer.

So now they’ll have to get creative with their training and dig deeper than ever before, Hayley informs them.

Joe says they won’t be going down without a fight!
