TBL 5×02: First Elimination, Challenge and another weigh-in?

Previously, on The Biggest Loser… Nine new couples set out on their journey. Well, ten, but we don’t like to talk about the tenth couple…

Tonight is Elimination Night. And also the first Challenge for the year. And a “face their deepest fears” challenge. AND a weigh-in.
Well, I guess we know how they’re going to deal with the missing couple. They’re just going to hurry right past the bits they were in.

Eh, simplest solutions are often the best.

Everyone files out of the weigh-in room to the lounge. Everyone has mixed emotions because they’re proud of themselves for pulling big numbers but also sad as they’re going to have to vote out two of their new friends.

Romi and Allan try to chat up some of the other couples to try and stay in the game. Allan’s made himself a target by giving himself the bracelet.

Phoebe and Jenni’s pitch is that they lost more weight than Romi and Allan and they didn’t take the gold bracelet. They just want to be there and they’ve been helping to keep everyone motivated and so on.

Then the somberfest of the elimination room. Hi Ajay.

Err, Hayley.

Lots and lots of shots of Hayley looking around at them all. Must have been fun trying to put this together!

Hayley talks to the Phoebe and Jenni couple about not quite losing enough weight. Phoebe says they can’t leave yet because they’ve started building the pyramid they need to get out of being fat. Or something like that.

Romi says it’s important for her to stay because she’s been trying to lose the weight for fifteen years and they’ve been trying for five years to have a baby and now she feels like her time is running out.

Each couple gets one vote only.

Wayne and Geoff, the Red Team, vote first. Both couples are in their training group and have trained hard. But they ended up going with strategy and voted out the stronger couple.
Allan and Romi: 1!

Next up is Green, Rick and Joe. Their vote is based on one team playing the game a bit better than the brothers thought they would be and they’ve got potential, which worries them.
Allan and Romi: 2!

Shannan and Chris, Blue, are next. Chris says it was hard, but they believe one couple has gotten themselves a decent building block to get started with and the other couple has a lot to be there for.
Phoebe and Jenni: 1!

Phil and David, the Grey team, are up. Gutwrenching decision, it’s a game and competition and the couple they voted for have the ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck.
Allan and Romi: 3!

One more vote for Allan and Romi will send them home.

Yellow’s turn, Caitlin and Daina. Daina says the couple has proven they’re a threat to herself and Caitlin. They’ve shown strength, determination and motivation and the girls think they’ll continue on with their weightloss journey.
Which is why they’ve voted for poor old Mr White Glow, making his first return for the series!

After the break… the girls have voted for Allan and Romi. Not particularly surprising but there you go, first eliminated couple of the series.

Romi says she’s going to kick their arses in the marathon!
Allan’s decided to give the gold bracelet to someone who’s astounded him with their results and effort and so he’s giving it to… Caitlin? Dude, not cool. She needs to be there almost as much as Shannon, who they previously gave the Nothing bracelet to.
Odd decision, to say the least.

Morning breaks on another day at Camp Biggest Loser. And they no longer have the big black vans just a series of small grey cars to ferry them around.

Welcome to Palm Beach for Challenge Day!
They’ll be competing as Couples, naturally. And of course they’ll want to win as the prize is huge… It’s immunity!

Rowboats are buried under them in the sand. On Hayley’s signal they can start digging until they’ve dug up a boat. Then carry the boat 200m to the other side of the beach. There’s oars there, tied together. Untie a pair and one member of each couple rows out to a pontoon to collect their teams flag.
Back to the beach with the flag then they race back the 200m they carried the boat over and plant their flag in the sand.

Jarna says Lisa asked her if she’d ever rowed before and Jarna says only in the bathtub when she was four!

Geoff and Shannon are unable to compete in the challenge due to medical issues. However Wayne and Chris their respective partners have the option of sitting out if they want, or they can compete as singles.
Both men choose to compete solo rather than sit out. It’s good exercise and you never know, they might win!

Soon as the race starts everyone is running around trying to find a boat. Dig dig dig! No shovels, hands only. And the boats are pretty decent sized, too.
Everyone’s soon bitching about being unable to find a boat or being unable to completely dig their boat out. Chris and Wayne eventually team up to try and dig out the one boat Wayne had found.

Joe and Rick are first to the oars.

Meanwhile Daina and Caitlin are digging away. Daina tries to instruct Caitlin on correct digging technique and accidentally flicks sand at her, causing Caitlin to fling a bunch of sand back at her while saying “Don’t fucking fling sand at me!!” Try digging properly then, stupid!

Joe? Rick? One of them is almost out to the flags and still none of the other couples are anywhere in sight. Looks like an easy win for the boys, barring catastrophe!

David asks Phil if he’d be able to row it if they pop it first. Uhh, no, I don’t think so.

Joe and Rick make it back to the beach while everyone else is still digging away. Well, Daina’s digging. Caitlin’s sat on her butt lamely flicking little bits of sand behind her. Not impressed.

Wayne and Chris have made a deal with each other. Wayne’s going out to grab his flag first then he’ll wait while Chris goes out and grabs his, too.

David tries giving a big push to Phil’s boat and ends up faceplanting into the water, causing Phil to call him a big baboon!
Phil’s trying to row out to the flags but is going more sideways than towards the flags, ending up a long way out of range.

Then Wayne breaks the oar of his boat while rowing it back in, oops! Now how will Chris get back out there?
Wayne takes his flag and walks off back up the beach.

Meanwhile Lisa has rowed out and grabbed her flag. While Phil continues to flounder. He’s now out past the barge that has the flags and he’s basically given up.
Elise and Teneale, Jenni and Phoebe are still back on the beach but they’re giving up on getting their boat out. Quitters!

Phil’s guestimated his distance from the flag as being 1.5-2km from the target, though the barge was only 500m from shore. That’s a long way past!
He said he was so lost he “couldn’t find his bum with a funnel”. Uhh, why would you want to find it with a funnel, Phil?

Lisa says the challenge was really hard, but fun and rewarding when they finished.

Meanwhile Phil has given up and is getting a tow back in to shore. Though he felt a little better when he found out some couples didn’t even get their boat out of the sand!

Michelle and Shannan jog up to Camp Biggest Loser for the first time, yay!
And they’ve come with a surprise for them all. They want the contestants to all get dressed up and come with them for the afternoon/evening.

They’re at the Riverside Theater. Cool!
Hayley asks them if they think they’re there to see a show? And they look hopeful!
Well, there’s going to be a show. But it’ll be the contestants.
Cue horrified looks on many of the faces.

In two hours time, the theater will be packed. And those people will be there to see them and listen to them. They’re going to take another giant step outside their comfort zone and confront that most terrible of terrible things… Speaking, in public! Gasp!
Erm, Jarna’s a Principal, I’m sure she’s real horrified about speaking to a bunch of people!

The audience tonight will be mostly people who’ve applied for The Biggest Loser in the past. And they’ll take the stage alone. For five whole minutes. Scary!

And oh boy, there’s a lot of fat people in the audience. A LOT.

Michelle tells us that this isn’t just about weightloss, it’s also about regaining confidence and self belief.

Lisa’s freaking out at the very thought of going up in front of anyone. She walks out of the dressing room. Next shot is of Hayley sitting down on some steps with her for a chat and pep talk. Hayley tells her that the people in the audience are there to hear from her.
Lisa doesn’t like the limelight, she doesn’t like to bring attention to herself. She’s happy to be Lisa, the Mum.
Hayley tells her she gets nervous because she cares. It would be more of a problem if it didn’t make her nervous!

Rick’s the first to step out on stage. He says his trigger to eat was his girlfriend of seven years having a miscarriage in February. He put on over 20kg since February. Joe’s clearly upset, as is Michelle. They’re backstage watching. “That is so brave,” Michelle says.
Rick tells the crowd everyone has triggers in their life and you’ve just got to deal with them, not just go to the fridge.
Rick gets a big round of applause while he’s still trying to think of what else to say.

David gets up in front of them and says it’s about honest. He asks the crowd if they’ve ever filled out a food diary, but lied? Oh, I didn’t really have that little Mars Bar, etc. He says you’re just lying to yourself and if you can’t be honest to yourself, what hope have you got?

Caitlin’s Mum passed away when Caitlin was 16. From then on she just kept eating, never really thought about the weight she was gaining, she lost hope and gave up. She’s only 22 and her sister is scared she’ll die by the time she’s 30.

Wayne gets out on stage and is winding up the crowd as he approaches the mike. He says six months ago there was floods in Brisbane and he’d gone to pick up his 3.5 year old girl Sienna. Was picking her up from daycare after picking up his 17 year old son from work.
The water was really deep. He had a four wheel drive so he just drove into some deep water and he thought he’d be fine.
It was dark though and he couldn’t see anything and then he ran into something and got stuck and water started pouring into the car. He had his little girl screaming in the back and he told his son to push him out the window… but he got stuck partway through.
He told his son he didn’t care what he had to do, just push him out the window. His son ended up using both feet on his backside to shove him out. The water was up to Wayne’s chest but he got his son to hand him his daughter and they walked about 500m through the floodwater to get to safety. And he knew then that it was time to lose weight.
So he applied to The Biggest Loser. He’s nervous but it’s the best decision he’s ever made and if he could give them some advice it’d be that tomorrow isn’t too late to start. Give it your best shot and hopefully you’ll enjoy the journey.

Lots and lots of people in tears, lots and lots of applause. Very emotional but as Shannan says as he gets backstage “Absolutely nailed it!”

Lisa finally comes out on stage. “Hello, I’m Lisa. I’m 41 and I’m from Perth. And this is the second hardest thing I’ve done in my life.” Awww!
She gets a big round of encouraging applause at that. And then she says the hardest thing she’s ever done was leaving her kids to come and do this, but she has to do it so she can be a better Mum.
One of her biggest regrets is that she doesn’t have pictures of them as babies with her in them because she hated her photo being taken. She was always the one behind the camera, taking the pictures. And she’ll never get that back, that chance to have photos with her babies.
Lots of fairly bored faces from the men, lots of teary red faces for the women.
Lisa, through her tears, says she always cries, if she’s not crying she laughs!
She tells them that it’s a big sacrifice taking time away from her kids now but in the long run it’ll be worth it. Make the changes now!
As she gets back stage Jarna is there to comfort her, and Hayley envelops her in a big hug. Awww, the new robot is a softy!

Woohoo, first Last Chance Training! Lots of fatties getting smashed by the trainers. Looks like they’re definitely sorted into training groups even though we didn’t actually see the process this year.

And now just like that we’re at another weigh-in!
Everyone’s nervous, as usual.

Hayley then tells them there was a reward for their public speaking thing, so long as they faced their demons and spoke about their lives on stage.
The reward? There’s no Yellow Line at this weigh-in and no elimination this week. Riiiight.

Unfortunately Geoff is in hospital at the moment (yikes!) and won’t be able to weigh in so Wayne will be weighing in alone.

Rick and Joe are first up.

Rick’s weight: 149.6kg
Loss: 8.2kg

Joe’s weight: 161.2
Loss: 6.4kg

Total: 14.6kg – 4.49%

Rick’s beaten Joe again! Joe’s annoyed since now he’s going to cop a ribbing for the rest of the week!

Shannon and Chris’s turn.

Chris’ weight: 116.6kg
Loss: 3.9kg

Shannon’s Weight: 193.7kg
Loss: 6.8kg

Total: 10.7kg – 3.33%

Shannon’s doing a little fatman dance because he’s under 200kg! He’s very excited by that.

Lisa and Jarna walk up next.

Lisa’s weight: 108.4kg
Loss: 4.8kg

Jarna’s weight: 106.9kg
Loss: 3.4kg

Total: 8.2kg – 3.67%

Caitlin and Daina’s turn!

Caitlin’s weight: 158.6kg
Loss: 5.6kg

Daina’s weight: 92.8kg
Loss: 3.7kg

Total: 9.3kg – 3.57%

Caitlin says she doesn’t remember ever feeling so good. She’s glad she hasn’t given up.

Elise and Teneale’s turn.

Elise’s weight: 93kg
Loss: 4.6kg

Teneale’s weight: 84.6kg
Loss: 3.8kg

Total: 8.4kg – 4.52%
First place! Not that it really matters.

Jenni and Phoebe hop up next.

Phoebe’s weight: 104.6kg
Loss: 4.3kg

Jenni’s weight: 117kg
Loss: 5.4kg

Total: 9.7kg – 4.19%

So Phoebe was flopping in relief! Hayley asks Jenni if she can imagine what a slim, healthy Jenni will feel like. “Nope!”

Phil and David!

Phil’s weight: 129.3kg
Loss: 5.8kg

David’s weight: 141.5kg
Loss: 7.5kg

Total: 13.3kg – 4.68%
Which puts them into the lead!

Just poor old Wayne to weigh in alone, now.

Wayne’s weight: 139.5kg
Loss: 7.6kg

Total: Uhhh. 7.6kg – 5.17%
First place!

Hayley congratulates them all and says that the single Biggest Loser was Rick.
But there’s a huge week coming up, so be proud. But be wary!

Tomorrow night, the first Temptation of the year. And Immunity is on the line once again… Will anyone be tempted enough to partake? Find out tomorrow night!
