TBL Australia 4×60: The Super Challenge Begins!
Previously… Michelle and Shannan ran away from that freaky kiwi land just as fast as their fit fit selves could manage!
Tonight the contestants will start this year’s Super Challenge.
Super Challenges are awesome, if you’ve not seen one before. Huge long races, triathlons in essence. But with fat people!
Ajay’s there at the riverside waiting with a kia ora greeting for them all. She announces that it is indeed the day of the Super Challenge, hooray!
Six of them left Camp Biggest Loser but only five will return. Awww!
Super Challenge details:
1. 4km bike race through unforgiving terrain to a big waterfall.
2. Bike to hike, 3km foot race following along the river
3. Kayaking for 1.5km down some rapids
4. 100m sprint to the finish line
5. At the finish line are six different food items, each varying in calories. The person who chooses the food with the highest amount of calories will be eliminated.
Meaghan’s picking Julie or Cam to lose this because they’re not as fast as the rest of them.
Ajay says at some point they’re going to hit a fork in the road and it will challenge everything they’ve faced this week. Ooooh!
Everyone gets their bikes – very sweet looking mountain bikes. Not sure what brand or model, so don’t ask. But they’re spiffy looking!
Sammy says the last time she was on a bike was when she was 11 or 12.. and that’s when she broke her arm! Never been on one since! So she’s freaking out. And gets off to an early… err, opposite of lead!
Sam also doesn’t get on her bike very elegantly. We see it again after the ad break.
Sean gets off to a good lead early on, naturally. Meaghan’s in second, followed by Cameron who’s actually doing really well on the bike!
Sean says the first part of the trail was quite nice and easy. But about a kilometre in the terrain gets rougher and you needed to be a bit more cautious, but he’s still going hard.
Meaghan says it’s a lot of fun riding the bike over the hills, but also a little scary due to worrying about going over the edge of the cliff at times.
Cam gets passed by Tiffany at one point up a hill, which Cam was okay with because it gave him something to catch up to.
Cam was keeping up okay until he ran into trouble. He runs off the track a little bit and then tries to get back on… but falls off the bike and lands on his shoulder. Cam says it got him pretty good, but it was okay, no worse than falling off a treadmill and he’s done that before. He gets back up and gets back on the bike and Sam doesn’t manage to catch him so he’s doing alright!
Sam, meanwhile, is still freaking right out. She keeps seeing rocks and going way off to the side. She much prefers the spin bikes.
Julie’s not surprised she’s last. She’s pushing the bike along any of the narrow bits with cliff dropoff bits and also pushing it up the hills because she thinks she doesn’t have the strength she needs in her legs.
Sean finishes the bike leg first. There’s a conch shell to blow a note out of. Sean doesn’t do too great, bit too much spitting, but he gets a sound out of it.
Meaghan actually does better when she arrives in second place. Tiffany does well in third, too.
Gawd, I hope they’re wiping it down between blows!
Meanwhile Cam’s trying to make up time in the bike leg and is making good time. He’d settled back down after his earlier crash, until… yep, he stacks it even harder the next time!
After an ad break, Cam says he ran into a tree stump. He thought it was just a little bush he’d be able to ride through but it was actually a tree stump. It stopped the bike right away. But Cam didn’t stop! He kept going and over the handlebars and into the scrub beside the road. Cam says quite a few bits were hurting then, but they usually work themselves out, so he’s going to get back on the bike and keep going.
And he does! Huge change from old-Cam.
Sean gets to the fork in the road first.
There’s two options. You can either bungy jump down to the river to get to the kayaks. Or you could take the stairs. But if you take the stairs you have to wait around for 30 minutes before you can get in the kayak.
Cameron makes it to the conch shell in fourth place and totally fluffs blowing a note on it, but he sits off at a steady jog down the track.
Meaghan gets to the fork and… freaks out a bit. Bungy is her biggest fear, she says. So she’s actually thinking about taking the stairs.
Sammy’s in fifth place. Her blow on the conch is even worse than her Dad’s!
Sam knows she won’t beat Sean, Meaghan or Tiffany, but she figured she ought to be able to catch up to her Dad. If she pushes hard and doesn’t stop she should do well.
Sean’s also got a big fear of bungy jumping. He’d always been scared, particularly when he was a larger person. It’s a 47m bungy drop so it’s not insignificant.
Meaghan’s not wanting to rule bungy out altogether so she heads up the stairs to take a look, just in time to see Sean take his jump.
Meaghan says she wishes she hadn’t seen it since it just scared her even more!
But she wants to stay in second and that’s the way to do it, and she wants to stay in second…
Julie’s still in last place. And approaches the conch shell from a different direction than the others. Did she run back or was there a bit of cheating involved? Hmm.
Tiff’s wanted to bungy jump for a long time. She’s done skydiving now in New Zealand so she just needs to tick bungy off the list of things she wants to do!
Tiffany gets to the edge of the bungy platform and looks down… and finally swears! “Oh shit!”
But she says she closed her mind and thought to herself that it’s only for a few minutes.
She jumps off and goes down feet first, causing her to snap downwards quite violently and get a bit of a dunking at the bottom of the bungy stretch. But she’s fine!
Sam passes Cam on the running leg. She gives him a big smile and a “Come on Dad” and keeps on running.
Tiff’s assuming Sean is ahead of her and with Meaghan now behind her, Tiff must be in second place!
Julie runs out of the woods and into a clearing and continues her self-described jog/shuffle thing. And she manages to go past Cameron who is currently only going at a fast walk. But still going!
Sammy gets to the bungy jumping and sees Meaghan still waiting there.
Sam asks Meaghan if she’ll do it if Sam does it first and says it’s okay? If she does it and says it wasn’t as bad as she thought, would Meaghan do it?
Meaghan looks off to the side for a second and then looks to the instructor guy and asks, “Can we do tandem?”
Sam is instantly intrigued by the idea and Meaghan starts begging to be able to do tandem.
And they let her do tandem!
Sam says they’ve done everything else together (O RLY?) they may as well do this.
And the safety guy says, “It’s always more fun to jump off a bridge with a friend.” Oh dear! :-D
Meaghan and Sam are getting strapped together on the edge of the platform.
Just as Julie arrives at the fork in the road!
She says she got angry after reading about the fork in the road because she’d never even think of doing a bungy jump, so she’d have to take the 30 minute penalty.
Sean, meanwhile, is arriving at the end of the kayak leg and gets out and starts his final run!
Sean says he’s always been competitive in nature but now that he can actually be really competitive, it’s coming out even more.
Sean gets to the plates of food and is considering the blueberries plate and the bowl with weetbix and skim milk. He wasn’t sure about the calorie counts of some of the other things so it was down to them. He eventually takes the weetbix and skim milk bowl.
Cam arrives at the fork last of all, naturally. He can see Julie standing at the end of the bungy jump area. She’s still waiting on Meaghan and Sam to do the tandem jump.
Julie says she can tell the girls are scared and she wanted to pull them back and give them a huge hug.
Meaghan and Sam are nearly ready to jump. But Meaghan freaks out again and wonders what’s wrong with her. Sam says nothing is wrong with her, she’s just scared. Nothing wrong with being scared but if you get off the platform you’ll regret it!
Meaghan says even though she knew she had Sam beside her it was still the scariest thing she’s ever done.
They try again and Meaghan freaks out again. She’s in tears and she tells us that she’d never freaked out like that before in her life!
Tiffany makes it to the food choices in second place.
Right away she knows blueberries are the best choice so she snaps them right up.
Julie’s thirty minute penalty is up so she heads down to the kayaks while Meaghan and Sammy still haven’t jumped. Julie’s concerned that if she stayed she’d be jeopardising her own place. Julie knows she’ll be very slow on the kayak leg so she’s still expecting the girls to go past her.
Cam’s thirty minutes are up so he hops in his kayak too, hoping actions speak louder than words and the girls seeing him going for it might get them to take the jump.
Sunday night, we find out if Meaghan’s scaredycatness will cost Sam a place in the competition!
Looks like Cam’s going to fall out of his kayak, too. Wonder if he fell down while running, too? We didn’t see. It’s probably a safe bet.
