TBL Australia 4×09: Race around the Fatties – Now with less mooseknuckle!
Previously, Tania and Ramses got sent home to go flog themselves there instead!
Tonight is a 2,500km race crossing sea, land and sky to get to the Biggest Loser’s new Sydney digs. And it sounds like if you don’t make it, you might be out of the game? Ooh!
Everyone heads into resort-loungeroom to chat about the elimination. Mel’s feeling relieved that her and Holly are still there but also sad because they’ve lost some friends. But everyone is sure they can do it at home.
Quite a few confirmations in asides that it was based mostly on who is the bigger threat.
Holly says to them all that she’s obviously a bit upset because she’d thought they were heading home for sure. And she’d been thinking of all the things she’d be going home to. In an aside she says she misses her boyfriend Ben a lot.
Ben says that Holly’s shown she wants to be there by dropping 6kg.
Julie says in an aside that Mel seemed grateful but Holly didn’t.
Nathan says he and Andrew have been competing with each other and doing well, but then they all get called to the beach for a chat with AJ. And they all have their backpacks on so they’re obviously not too unaware of what’s happening.
Ajay tells them that while their journey started on Fitzroy Island, it’s not where it ends. It’s time to go home! But not to the home they know. They’re embarking on the biggest mission the competition has ever seen – a 2,500km journey across the country.
Jodi immediately thinks it’ll be an extremely long, extremely tough, extremely scary journey.
Ajay says the race is to their new home in Sydney… and the first couple to get there wins Immunity!
Sitting out in the ocean are 4 kinds of transport – a speedboat, a seaplane, a fishing trawler and a sailboat. The first three can carry two couples each. They have to row out on inflatable dinghys. Each mode of transport will only leave once it is full.
They’re heading to Cairns on the mainland first. Then it’s a 3km foot race to Cairns Airport for a flight to Sydney. They’ll get further instructions on arrival in Sydney.
And just one more thing. They all have to carry a small bag of sand with them.
The significance will be revealed when they arrive at their new home. Ajay says for the last team to arrive the impact will be huge.
I wonder if the weight of the sandbags will get added to their weight next week?
Meaghan wants to go well, Julie is scared but doesn’t want to let Meaghan did.
Holly and Mel are playing it smart, planning on rowing out as fast as possible and communicating with the other couples to try and fill up a mode of transport ASAP so they can get going.
And apparently Jeda is afraid of water where she can’t see the bottom. She’s doomed if she’s on the sailboat!
Holly and Mel go hard at the start and get an early lead. Holly’s got both their oars and is paddling very strongly.
Sammy and Cameron are struggling. Cameron’s paddling but keeps slipping off the seat so Sammy’s got her back up against him.
Holly and Mel have teamed up with Nathan and Andrew, they decided that they’d help each other out as much as possible.
Holly and Mel get up onto the seaplane first with Andrew and Nathan not far behind.
Stewart’s bragging on his boyscout roots, saying he’s paddled a boat a few times before.
Sharif wanted to row. But Sharif can’t row. Teresa’s giving him a hard time in an aside.
Sharif finally realises they’re in trouble when the brothers and sisters take off in their seaplane. And Mel’s really happy that they’re keeping up with the frontrunners for winning the entire thing!
Andrew’s happy they’re winning. Again. And Nathan’s just really enjoying the plane ride!
Julie and Meaghan head for the fishing charter. Julie says they were happy to make it.
Ben and Sean decide to head for the charter boat as well, making that boat full.
Jodi and Jeda head for the fishing charter as well. Apparently the concept of two couples is foreign to them. They’re blaming Ben and Sean for telling them to keep coming.
Jeda says she could see Julie and Meaghan on the boat, she’s not sure if Ben and Sean could, but she could. And yet they kept rowing! Stop blaming others for your mistakes!
Ben and Sean and Julie and Meaghan are on the fishing charter and thus in second place so far. Ben says the island was lovely, but it’d been a bad week for him with being so unwell and fainting and whatnot.
Julie’s sad to be leaving because it’s such a beautiful place!
Stewart and Amanda finally make it out onto the speedboat and are throwing high fives at each other. Then they remember they’ve got to wait for another couple before they can go!
Meanwhile Jodi’s bitching some more. Boohoo, have to take a ride on the sailboat!
Bob and Tiffany head for the sailing boat too. So poor Sharif has to keep rowing out to the speedboat!
He says he wanted to give up but you can’t give up but you want to give up!
At his lowest point he was thinking about his wife and how her birthday is coming up and he won’t be there for it. If you row slow enough you’ll be sent home in time for it!
Jeda’s devastated by having to spend two and a half hours on a sailboat.
But they’re sure they’ll be fine so long as they don’t let the others on the sailboat overtake them.
Teresa’s taken over rowing now. She says his upper body strength wasn’t up to it, but hers is. Sharif’s a team leader ordinarily. And sometimes he bites off more than he can chew, and today was another instance of it!
Sharif feels like he’s let her down. Not only did he not get her there but now she has to row his weight and as the heaviest person in the game, that’s no mean feat!
Amanda’s not sure if Sharif and Teresa will ever make it. And they’re an awful long way away still!
After another excruciatingly long ad break… Teresa’s still paddling!
But at last they make it to the speedboat. Amanda and Stewart are very understanding, even though they’re going to be in last place because of it.
And on the seaplane, back in first place. The brothers and sisters agree to stay in it together, at least until Sydney. After that it can be every sibling for themself.
Jeda’s whinging some more about potentially coming last. Tiffany thinks her and Bob can stay in the game via weightloss alone but they’d love to have the immunity!
The fishing boat is also cruising along quite nicely. But Julie thinks the speedboat could blitz them all at any point.
They’re finally off though. 60 knots, 50 nautical miles, 25 minutes. Teresa impresses the other people with her nautical knowledge, gained from her ex-husband!
The fishing people can see the seaplane disembarking and they’re surprised they’re not further behind.
They receive a map and head off on foot. 3km of steady hoofing it.
Holly and Mel manage to keep a good pace right alongside the boys for the most part. How much of that was the boys waiting up for them and how much was their own effort is unclear. At one point Nathan’s saying they all need to pick up the pace a bit.
Bean and Sean decide to head off at a brisk pace as well, hoping to catch up… But they’ve apparently not realised there’s maps available. And nor have Julie and Meaghan!
It’s going to be a long race to the airport when you don’t know how to get there!
All four of them start wandering around asking where the airport is and someone finally tells them there’s maps way back down the end… Eventually. Sean manages to walk right past it again!
The brothers and sisters arrive at the airport and grab their tickets off the nice greeting ladies. Who look a bit flustered at being presented with sweaty fat people!
Sammy and Cameron figure they’ll be last but Sammy wants them to at least make a good showing of it.
Sammy walks right past the maps too.
Jodi and Jeda have headed off at a swift pace.
Meanwhile Bob and Cameron are having a nice dawdle and chat while Sammy and Tiffany walk a bit faster up ahead, chatting away, too.
Jodi says they’re running as fast as they can and then slowing down for a bit. And it was exhausting! Fancy that…
They’re still whinging on about the stuffup over the fishing charter. And Jeda says the next time Ben and Sean fall below the yellow line they’re getting her vote!
Sammy’s getting a little frustrated at Dad Cameron as he’s going very slowly. She knows he has sore knees and feet but she was still hoping he’d go a little faster.
Teresa meanwhile has spoken to Sharif and they’ve decided they won’t leave Amanda and Stewart behind because Amanda and Stewart had had to wait for them. It would’ve been disrespectful to leave them behind.
Jedi meanwhile are pleased at leaving everyone else behind. They think they’re real heroes now!
Sharif and Teresa get to the checkout desk a bit before Amanda and Stewart but they both agree to wait for Amanda and Stewart. The checkout chick is impressed they’re going to wait… and shocked at them having to row for 2.5 hours!
Holly’s wondering what will be waiting for them in Sydney as Ajay said that the race will have only just begun once they get there.
Apparently they all ended up on the same flight after all. But they’re going to get off in a staggered start in the same order they got on the plane.
Nathan and Andrew are sprinting through the airport shouting. I’m sure security there was happy.
They get outside the airport and there’s a desk with a variety of travel options on there – $20, bus pass, train pass, ferry ticket… and a large sign that says “Manly or bust” ie; a hitchhiking sign. Great message to send to the kids.
Holly’s never been to Sydney before, so they’re completely lost!
Andrew and Nathan try their luck with a Sydney cabbie. They say they have no cash but they’re on the TV show The Biggest Loser… Taximan is not interested!
Holly and Mel have no idea where to go so they start randomly asking people how to get to where they’re going.
Sean and Ben decide to take the ferry pass because they knew where a ferry would set off from and where it would drop them off.
Andrew and Nathan finally find a nice chap named Fred who offers them a lift in his minivan!
Julie and Meaghan hop on a bus. The first one that arrived. Hope it’s the right one!
Holly asks one of the bus drivers if he goes to Manly or if he knows which one to get on. And of course he doesn’t know.
Jedi are completely lost. They ask random people inside the airport the best way to get there.
Meanwhile Holly comes out of her shell long enough to yell, “Has anybody got any money?! We need some money!” Mel says they realised they needed to catch the ferry and a train so they decide to try and scab for money! They get $5 off one guy. Who gets a hug!
And a little dude gives her some coins. And some random guys give them some more. They eventually get enough money together for a train ticket to Wynyard. Ewww, Wynyard!
Bob and Tiffany go the scab route on their train as well and get $10 from a nice old lady.
Cameron and Sammy think they can’t get there for $20 as it costs $14 each to get to Circular Quay by train. Or something like that.
Sharif and Teresa and Amanda and Stewart get to the ticket bench last and have to split up as only a $20 and a ferry pass remain.
Annnnd of course the journey doesn’t end tonight. Tune in again tomorrow for the rest of the race!
