Biggest Loser Australia 3×59: Contestants Face Their Fears Part Two (now with added trinkets!)
Tonight on The Biggest Loser the rest of the contestants face their fears in Hawaii!
Michelle gets to fly a glider around (awesome!), Sam gets to go swimming with sharks (scary!) and Alison gets to… jump off the same cliff as Cosi. Err, lame!
Would you like to know more?
This trip is not a holiday, Shannan says!
Sam’s greatest fear in the world is sharks. Sam asks why his biggest fear wouldn’t be sharks? They’re big things that live in the water and can rip human flesh apart!
The water in the harbour is glassy, but outside the harbour they hit some chop. Shannan says you couldn’t tell if Sam was seasick because he was white as a ghost!
Sam says when your greatest fear is sharks and you’re heading off into the ocean, you put one and one together.
Shannan grins and points to a couple of polystyrene containers on the deck of the boat and asks Sam what’s in there and Sam gets a disgusted look on his face and says chum! Shark lure!
Apparently Sam was so scared of being bitten by a shark he wouldn’t even go in water deeper than his shoulders. He was also so self concious about his weight that he wouldn’t even sit on the beach with his mates. Which Shannan says is really sad for someone his age.
Shannan says within a few seconds the water will have 20-30 sharks in it. Sam looks down and sees them starting to congregate. And is visibly worried, though he’s keeping a smile on his face as always. For a little while. Until he starts to look a little sick…
Shannan says he chose this especially for Sam because it seemed to him that Sam had been living his life in a cage, life was passing him by.
Sam thinks it’s a perfect metaphor.
Shannan says if Sam can conquer this today, there’s nothing he should be afraid of in the world.
Sam says before the show, he’d’ve said no. But even though it’s very scary, he’s got to do it. It’s part of his weightloss experience. Sam says there’s no point losing the weight if your mental attitude doesn’t change, since then you may as well not have lost weight at all.
Shannan then has two more things to tell Sam. “Sharks can sense fear. They can sense your heart rate. So if your heart’s beating fast and you’re all nervous they’re going to be able to sense it. So you need to get control of your fears, a couple of nice deep breaths and you’re going into their world mate!”
Time to get in the cage! And Sam manages to get in right away, yay!
Shannan says you could see the mood of the sharks change right away, they could sense something new in the water.
A couple of times the sharks come right for them and Sam panics and pops his head out of the water.
Sam says he’s worried about his arms going outside the cage or his legs falling through.
Shannan says this is Sam’s greatest fear – being in a hostile, intimidating environment, way outside of his comfort zone.
Shannan tells Sam that he’s lived his life inside a cage and life has passed him by. But now it’s time to get outside the cage. Yes, literally, outside the big metal cage that is stopping the sharks from having tasty Sam and Shannan snacks.
Um, no. I’ll stay fat and un-shark-nibbled thanks Shannan!
In the cage, he was in a hostile and threatening environment, but with some self belief and bravery, he got the situation under control, Shannan says to us.
Shannan tells Sam he’s very proud of what he’s done, but there’s no reason he can’t do this.
Sam says, “It’s a bit of a metaphor of life, I’ve been living in a cage.” He says here it’s sharks on the outside, but in the real world it’s other people that are judging him. You’ve got to get in there and not care what they think and do what you want to do!
Shannan opens a tiny hole in the cage to let himself and Sam out so they can cling to the outside of the cage. Sam is petrified, he says!
Shannan says if Sam can conquer his fear he’ll change his life forever. Shannan motions to Sam to come away from the cage.
Sam says his heart rate started to go up but then he got it under control and it all became really calm. Nothing to be afraid of, now!
Shannan says when Sam let go of the cage, he conquered his fear.
“I thought to myself, bloody hell the mind’s a powerful thing. If I can get all the fear out of me in the middle of thirty, forty sharks, without a cage to protect me, there’s nothing that can be thrown at me that I won’t be able to do from now on.” – Sam
Shannan’s stoked with Sam managing to conquer his fear. He asks how Sam managed to do it.
Sam says when Shannan opened the door, that was the scariest bit. But it was like opening a new door to life which is exciting and different.
“Is that the end of fat Sam?” “Yep, he’s gone. He’s still in the cage down there.”
Sam says he’s now ready to go on and live life.
Shannan asks him if he can swim with sharks, can he win The Biggest Loser and Sam says definitely. He’s fit, he’s not too far from the top of the leaderboard and still has plenty of weight to lose. He can win this!
Shannan says Sam has impressed him yet again with his maturity and determination and guts. He’s so proud of him!
Bob and Jillian have been looking forward to this.
Michelle says she has a big fear of heights.
Bob says her fear in general has stopped her from doing so many other things. “Michelle is the Queen of I Can’t.”
Michelle says she’s always been too scared to go shopping in cool shops and so on because she was overweight.
Michelle is going to get inside an engineless glider and be attached to another plane and be given the power to let it all go.
“You will have a barf bag! And you will be on the phone with us.” – Jillian
Michelle is freaking out, she doesn’t think she can do it. Of course, we’ve seen her doing it on the ad so we already know she’s going to…
Jillian says the significance of gliding is that the person in the front of the glider has to do the actual release of the plane with the motor, so it’s symbolic of releasing her fears and setting herself free. Even though releasing is the bit that starts the actual scary bit with the loops and the turns and the spirals and the CRASHING INTO THE GROUND AND DYING!!!
Michelle says she’s sitting herself, but let’s do it!
Jillian says the girl who came to meet them in LA was full of I Can’t, I Won’t, etc. But now hopefully she’ll have the confidence to face down her fears.
Michelle lifts off into the air and is sitting bolt upright in the seat, staring straight ahead with a petrified look on her face, not looking to either side at all.
They get 2,000 feet up and Michelle asks the pilot dude how much higher and he says another 3,000 feet yet!
Hilariously it looks like she might throw up before they even get off the tow rope. She’s so going to barf when they start doing barrel rolls!
Bob says to Jillian that there’s no way their little girl would have done this a couple of months ago and Jillian says there’s no way she’d do it herself!
Jillian asks if Michelle is going to let go. Michelle responds, “Ohhh my god!”
But then, “No more I can’ts!” And she releases the tow cable, yay!
“Wooooooooo!” – Jillian
One more obstacle to overcome. Loop the loop! Do it! Do it!
Michelle totally freaks out and is screaming her head off right from the start and gradually gets more and more hysterical. “I can’t watch it, I can’t watch it.” – Jillian. Who looks like she might need that barf bag herself!
Michelle says it was an amazing feeling and the pilot asked at one point if she wanted another one and she said yeah, keep going!!!
Michelle says she turned from a sad, scared person into a person who was having an absolute ball!
Jillian and Bob run over to where the glider lands and Bob says you could see her face lit up inside the cockpit.
Michelle says after they let go, she was shitting herself through the first loop but after that she had so much fun. She thanks the pilot and gives him a big hug. Aww!
Bob and Jillian are so proud of her, they say.
Michelle is different now, she left the I Can’t Girl behind, Bob says.
“What are you going to do now?” “I’d love to find a boyfriend.” And be able to walk into any shop and buy stuff and walk down the street with her head held high and be proud of herself.
Bob says she’s done it. She’s there!
Alison has something picked out for her by Shannan as well. The same cliff Cosi jumped off yesterday!
Alison says she’s afraid of heights but mostly afraid of edges. She doesn’t like being near an edge. If they’re in a car she doesn’t like being on the side that has the drop, even.
Shannan says Alison has been wanting to be the perfect Mum but she has no energy or exuberance and she can’t be a role model to her kids because she’s overweight.
Alison says she’s not had a lot of balance in her life because she always thought she had to give everything away and do everything for her kids.
Shannan and Alison are going to do cliff jumping together. So Michelle’s a piker!
Alison says when Shannan told her, her whole body went numb and she had a rush of sickness and panic.
Shannan needs to relax her and get her to calm down a bit and believe in herself.
“It’s time to focus on the new-Ali, not the old-Ali. Don’t start to doubt yourself straight away.”
Shannan points out the ledge that they’ll be jumping off. “You’re fucking kidding me, aren’t you?!” Alison asks.
It’s not just jumping off the cliff that is the challenge, it’s jumping at the right time. Jump too early and you get washed into the blowhole. Jump too late and the water will be too shallow.
Shannan and Alison get harnessed up and head down to the ledge to look at the jump. Shannan’s not in a wetsuit though. Maybe he’s going to wuss out like Michelle?
As they get to the ledge the old Alison returns, Shannan says. Overthinking and doubting herself. She’s worried about not jumping far enough and hitting a rock and Shannan says she won’t, don’t even think things like that!
The Alison that came into the House thought she had everything together. She kept a clean house, made sure everyone ate healthy and was a perfect Mum. But all she needed to do was lose weight. But that wasn’t right at all, she was just a shell with nothing of Alison left in it, at all.
“How can you teach your kids when you’ve got nothing really there to teach, when you’re just a shell? You have to be out there living, you can’t teach your kids while you’re sitting on the sidelines.” – Alison
Shannan says Alison’s been trapped by her weight and not living her life for the last twelve or fourteen years. Standing on the rock she has two choices – staying in the past or moving into the future and living life TO THE MAX.
Shannan says he’ll have the biggest cuddle ever waiting for her when she’s done!
Shannan has the utmost confidence in her, but it’s such a massive jump. He walks around the cliff face and gets in position down the bottom so he can make sure Alison jumps at the right moment.
If Alison hesitates for even a second it could jeopardise her safety. Yikes!
She’s still roped up at the moment so she’s obviously not jumping yet? Come on!
Shannan can tell she’s still petrified. But she unhooks herself and gets ready to jump.
“Go baby go!” But she doesn’t! Shannan calls up that it’s too late, you can’t flinch, you’ve got to go!
Shannan cajoles her some more, saying Alison sad mother, nothing to give. Strong empowered mother, beautiful Ali, beautiful family, beautiful kids!
Another chance to jump comes up and… she jumps! The water looks a lot less white than when Cosi did it, I think maybe she left it a little late. But she’s fine!
Shannan points up the cliff to where she jumped from and tells her to look up at the cliff to say goodbye to the old Alison.
In an aside, Alison says it was quite emotional saying goodbye to the old her.
Alison says before the show she’d do all the Mum things, she was defined by them. She’d cook and clean and do homework but she never really did anything active. But now she’ll get out there and her kids will love it!
“I can’t believe I’ve missed out on life. I can’t believe that I haven’t let my family have this. I always thought I was being the best Mum possible and it was nowhere close!” – Alison.
“Is this Ali who just jumped off that cliff there now a fair representation of who you really are?” “Shit yeah! I want to do it again!”
Alison says the new Ali is fun, adventurous and going to live life to the full!
Michelle and Jillian take the remaining girls out for some training/fun on the beach. Michelle and Jillian are in bikini tops with shorts. Hot!
The girls are in rash shirts. Because they’re going to do some standing paddleboarding. Expect some paddling in the challenge!
Alison heads straight for the blue board. “Blue for life!”
Michelle the fatty and Jillian struggle to even pick their’s up because the boards are so huge and ungainly.
Kirsten has shitty balance she says so she’s struggling to even stand up. Michelle the fatty stands up for all of five seconds then starts flailing and falls over.
Jillian and Michelle then get them to have a race out to a boat and back once they’ve got the hang of it.
Kirsten says it’s the first time they’ve been in swimsuits for a while and she says it’s nice to feel confident in her suit again.
She stopped playing waterpolo in 1998 due to a shoulder injury (awww!) and thus she started putting on the weight at that point. So she no longer felt comfortable getting into a swimming costume and now she’s surprising herself with what she can do.
Michelle says she’s not done too many water activities but she loves giving everything a go. In the past her weight has affected her social life and now that she’s lost a lot of weight and looks and feels different she can’t wait to get out there and socialise with her friends.
Michelle the trainer says Michelle the fatty doesn’t know how to turn so she’s going to go all the way to the Tasman!
Alison’s doing really well, to the cheers and applause of Michelle and Jillian. Alison says it’s amazing, she has a new body and a new mind. The girl on the long board is not the same one who left Perth all those weeks ago.
Michelle says it’s a bit of a change in the guard, with Alison beating Kirsten at something. Alison’s leading the race back in to the beach, but she says she was just thinking, “Just stay on the board!!!”
Alison is very pleased with winning a race for the first time ever! And not just won, but won by a long way!
Michelle walks up the beach to where there’s some tikis set up on the beach with Bob and Jillian. Are they tikis in Hawaii?
They’ve got her a pretty necklace thingy with two waves on it. One wave represents the past, one pulls her into her future. It’s made of bone, apparently. Has two little stones on it, too. Looks pretty.
And it’s time for Jillian and Bob to go back to the rest of America while Michelle goes back to Australia. One way or another, she’s going home soon!
Michelle thanks them both for turning her into a new person. Jillian says, on behalf of both of them, it’s been a pleasure.
Jillian says in an aside that she’ll miss Michelle.
Michelle says Jillian has taught her so much about herself and so much about life and helped her to overcome so many obstacles.
“It’s a whole new chapter after this!” – Bob
Michelle says Bob is a beautiful person, who has also taught her a lot. She owes her life to Bob and Jillian.
“You’ve got a friend in both of us and we love you.” Awww, Bob!
Michelle and Shannan want them all to reflect on their time in Hawaii as it’s the end of their week in Hawaii. Well, just their people. Michelle is nowhere to be found.
Michelle says it’s their last night with them and they’ve enjoyed their time. It’s been great seeing them learning and growing and they’ve learnt from them and been inspired by them in turn.
Then they all get gifts too!
It’s a whale carved out of bone in the form of a necklace for Garry.. The whale represents family, the barbs represent accomplishment and the hook represents prosperity and Michelle wants him to have all of those things going into the future.
And Garry kisses Michelle on the lips, not the cheek. Mmmkay.
Kirsten’s is a swirly thing. It’s a fern leaf curled up, apparently. As the leaf uncurls it bursts into new life.
Shannan says Alison is beaming. She’s got a brand new energy. “Someone’s turned a light on inside your soul, man, because it’s beaming straight out of every part of your body.”
Shannan says that Alison was most affected by the hike up the mountain and Alison says it made her realise how she used to feel all the time.
Alison’s is a turtle! Which represents happiness, health and balance in nature.
Cosi says he’s no longer a morbidly obese Dad, he’s a fit and healthy young Dad to an 8 year old and about to be a new Dad to a brand new baby!
Cosi’s is… a cultural symbol of courage and strength. Looks like a leaf with ridges down the outside. Michelle says it’s perfect for him because he’s been courageous throughout the whole journey.
Cosi says it’s an honour to have someone of her caliber giving him that sort of compliment.
Sam’s is a fish hook shape, which symbolises strength, courage and safe travel over water.
It’s made from two different materials, which represents the coming together of two forces and unity.
Sam says they were told they’d come as one person but would leave as another and it’s true, he’s a different person. It’s been a great experience and it’s a shame it’s coming to an end.
They’ve had a great time, Michelle says, but they have to tell them one thing before leaving.
Tomorrow will be a super challenge between all the contestants.
So much for the jovial mood, thanks Michelle!
Cosi says the challenges are pretty tough ordinarily, but they’ve never had “super” before them.
Kirsten saw the one in last series and figures someone could get eliminated.
Tomorrow night, Ajay is in Hawaii!
From the mountains to the sea, the race will be on. At least one person stacks their bike, so it should be good times!
