Season 3, Episode 18: Brains vs Brawn – Do the Fatties have either?

Previously on The Biggest Loser, Steven became only the second person to quit The Biggest Loser Australia, running away from an opportunity to train with two of the biggest names in personal training in the entire world because he got a little bit homesick.
And Sam got unceremoniously yanked away from his beloved Blue Team and was forced to become part of Red.

Tonight on The Biggest Loser is Challenge night. Red and Blue battle it out for ultimate supremacy in… some weird game involving sandbags, conveyor belts and gameshow buzzers.

Would you like to know more?

Shannan knows Blue has some news for him, doesn’t know what it was but Garry’s been on The Walk.
Shannan asks where Sam is. I wonder if at first he thought he was hiding again?
They tell him Red Team took him. Shannan is visibly crushed. He says the energy in the room is very low.
Shannan asks them all how Sam’s doing and they tell him he’s not doing well.
Shannan recalls that Sam put his faith in him, running straight to him to be trained by Shannan. And Sam had then gone on to pick the rest of Blue.
Shannan thinks Sam is vulnerable. If Red lose, he might be the one to go.

Shannan wants them to turn their anger at the situation around and use it as motivation to win the weigh in.

Sam’s nervous for his first day as a Red, seeing how Michelle likes him as a Red.
Garry thinks it’ll be a good thing having Sam on the team.
“That colour looks good on you.” – Michelle
Michelle admits she’s quietly confident, now she’s plus one Sam.
Sam is still in a bit of shock because Blue had started to settle down.
Sam says he appreciated the warm welcome from Michelle and the rest of Red, but it’s still hard to be happy about it.
Michelle sympathises and says they’ll do the best they can to make him feel welcome.
“Sam did mention that he’s going to miss Shannan and that totally makes sense… but he will learn to love me!” I already do and I’m not on your team, Michelle!

Red and Blue head off to another mysterious location with no idea what’s going on.
It’s Ajay in a big shed!

No, I mean a big metal shed. Like a warehouse. Her outfit is actually a nice pink dress that is really quite flattering and un-shed-like.

Ajay says today’s challenge will be gruelling, punishing and a test of their endurance. They’re playing “Brains versus Brawn”, a quiz contest with a difference!

Cosi has a look at his team and figures there’s not a hell of a lot of brains on his team!
You picked ’em, mate!

One person from each team gets asked a series of questions. Get it right and you’re closer to success. Get it wrong and it will cost you heavily!
The rest of the team is the “brawn”. If the brain gets it wrong then a 10kg bag of sand falls onto a huge plate that is being held by the brawn.

There’s no prize today. Sort of. Whoever loses, their team incurs a 3kg weight penalty for the next weigh in.
So Red need it really badly, or they’ll get flogged by double digits again!

Red and Blue split up to decide who’ll be their elected brain.
Blue think maybe John should be, since he can’t be brawn he could be brain. John isn’t confident enough in his own ability to know things, so he’ll have to sit out altogether.
Debbie says she’s been a yoyo dieter since she was 18 and now she’s 40. She has the knowledge but has never used it properly. Alison meanwhile is saying she’s not confident in her calories. They end up deciding on Debbie to be the Brain.

John is angry about having to sit out. You’d think he’d be used to it by now.
Red now have to pick someone to sit out as well, so they choose Nicola.

Cosi chooses Nicole, as she’s the only one who has an IQ over 4.
In an aside she says she wouldn’t really have trusted anybody else because they’re all a bit clueless.

Both teams are nervous, etc. Need to win, better chance to win the weigh in.

The plates are about 20-30kg without any weight on it, apparently.
Sean’s bung foot may be an issue, Kirsten says. He can’t stand on it for long so they’re hoping Debbie will get a lot of questions right.
Sean says he’ll take every opportunity to take the weight off his heel.

Question 1: How many calories in a glass of water?
Answer: Zero!

Nicole’s stuck. She doesn’t know.
Both answer zero correctly, though.
Debbie’s quietly confident.

Question 2: How many calories in a medium, 45g box of movie popcorn?
Debbie answers 140, Nicole answers 150.
Answer: 215 calories.
Nicole is closest so she gets to press her button, lobbing a 10kg weight onto the Blue team’s plate.

Question 3: How many kilojoules in a calorie? (approx)
4.1 Nicole says, Debbie says 4.
Answer: 4.2
Nicole is closest again! Another 10kg bag for Blue.

Question: How many calories in a 500g large supreme pizza?
Answer: 1350 calories.
Debbie’s closest. Red gets a bag!

Cosi says the first bag is kind of okay though they were all bracing themselves beforehand.

Question: How much fat in 1 tablespoon of peanut butter?
Debbie answers 20g, Nicole answers 10g
Answer: 10g
Nicole’s grinning like the Cheshire Cat!

Blue is up to 4 bags at this point, Red has 3.

John is off on the sidelines thinking to himself he shouldn’t underestimate his ability ever again!

Question: How many calories in a 35g slice of white bread?
Debbie says 85, Nicole 100.
Answer: 90

Go Debbie!
Cosi’s getting a bit ticked. “How many calories in 10kg of sand, Nicole?” He’s joking though. In context it’s clear he’s not being a bastard about it.

Question: True or false, eating off a large plate will make you eat more?
Nicole goes true, Debbie goes false.
Answer: True

Would have thought that was obvious? More room on the plate!
Alison is feeling very sad for Debbie because it’s a hard position to be in. She’s urging Debbie on from where they’re carrying the plate. “We’re strong!” She says.
John says you could tell Debbie was getting upset for getting the questions wrong.
She’d spoken to the team and asked that they not hate her afterwards, she doesn’t know how she’ll go.
John thinks he would definitely got more questions right.

Question: Which is lower in calories? Cafe style chicken caesar salad (250g) or grilled fish + small serve of hot chips (100g of each)
Debbie went caesar, Nicole went fish and chips
Answer: Fish and chips.

Alison says if Sam had still been on the team they’d’ve done better because they could have sat their injured player (Sean) out.
Sam says it sounded easy at first but it was actually more difficult than they thought.

Question: How much fat in 100g of raw cashew nuts?
Sean is starting to struggle, so Alison hopes Debbie gets this one.
Debbie guessed 28, Nicole answered 30.
Answer: 49g

Ouch.

Blue now has 7 bags to Red’s 4.

Question: How many calories in a 50g bag of potato chips
Answer: 250 calories.
Debbie guessed 180, Nicole guessed 250.

Blue has a hell of a lot of bags on their plate now. Sean’s struggling more and more, getting frustrated with his injury. Cosi says it’s killing him.
Kirsten says it was hard standing next to him, watching him shake, hearing him moan and groan, shifting his weight, it was demoralising.
Sean says he’s having trouble breathing again, nauseous too.

Blue is up to 10 bags. Sean is worried that he’d collapse or otherwise lose grip of the ring, meaning his team might be at risk of injury.

Question: How much sugar in an 80g king size mars bar.
Debbie answered 125g, the answer was 49 which was closer to Nicole’s guess of 45g.

But wait a minute. It’s an 80g mars bar. And Debbie’s answer is that there’s 125g of sugar in it? Cosi is as mystified as me.
“Clap clap clap! You absolute tool! How could you do that? This is national TV and you have said there are 120 grams of sugar in an 80 gram Mars Bar. WHAT?!” – Cosi

Sean says he needs to tell his teammates that the situation is quite dire.
Kirsten wants to tell him to snap out of it, hold it, get on with it! But she can’t imagine how much pain he was in.

And on Sunday we find out the result. Yes, they couldn’t even be bothered fitting the challenge in to their half hour, while they waste an entire hour on rubbish like The Walk!

And in the US Jillian gets to the bottom of Carrianne’s issues.
Red Team pressure peaks as it looks like they might lose another weigh in.

And nothing is as it seems. And it seems like all the fatties are looking out the door of the weigh in room expecting someone to come in? But surely Black isn’t coming yet, they’d be a team of 3 against two teams of 6.
Maybe another secret team will be rocking up? Find out Sunday…
