Recap #7 – Sunday 11th Feb. – First weigh-in, seventy-fourth backstabbing.
Ahhh yes, the results of the walk. Alex has been set up to train with Jillian for a day. Can he hack it or is he going to cave under the pressure?
Who will lose a lot of weight in the first competitive weigh-in, and who will disappoint their teammates?
Read on to find out the answers to these questions and more!
First up, the end of the challenge is replayed, with the results being announced again. Surprisingly enough, the result was the same as it was on Friday, shock!
Damien explains that the Blues did think about going for the training session, but ended up deciding they needed a reward and opted for the dinner instead. Marty goes on to say that the Red team was quite pleased with that and couldn’t believe the Blues had passed up the chance at more training!
To the Blue team’s credit, they do ask plenty of questions about the food they ordered, such as how things are cooked and what’s in them and so on.
The restaurant has a thing where they give customers a taste test of certain things. The waittress brought them out a couple of plates full of spoons with a scallop and wasabi sauce on top of them. Most of the team turned them down, but Gerard had one to see what they were like. Michael expressed his concern that Gerard wasn’t thinking straight.
A short while later the cruel wait staff brought them out some desserts – putting a concoction with a dollop of ice cream in front of Gerard! One of his weaknesses, as he’s said before, is ice cream.
Shannan eventually wanders in to have a chat with his team at the restaurant and is pleased at their report of not having had anything unhealthy, just a fairly equivalent meal to what they would have had back at the mansion anyway.
Then we cross to the red team, all of whom seem to be enjoying their dragon boat training, with Michelle cheering them on from the wharf. She was very happy with them all getting out there to do some more training, though I’m not sure if they could actually have knocked back the training if they’d wanted to.
The next day is inspiration day! Words of encouragement from past contestants, in DVD form!
Jillian and Michelle bring in DVDs, one from Adro, one from Kristie, both previous red team members.
Adro congratulates them for making it onto the show and for making the decision to do something about their weight.
Alex was impressed by the messages, because it’s shown him that there really is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Greg said that it made him really feel like he could do it, because if Kristie can do it, with five kids, then of course he can make it!
Blue team’s motivators are Fiona and Harry. Fiona is looking tanned and fantastic!
Kelly tells us Bob had told them that Fiona was always saying it’s too hard and too much, and she pulled through, so everyone can do it.
We don’t really see much more than that. The clip of Harry we see is not very long.
Now, to the walk result, with Jillian training Alex only for the day. Jillian is pretty much pissed off with Courtney’s attitude towards Alex, pointing out that there’s no way to know who the weakest link is yet, we haven’t even had a weigh-in yet!
She then gets down to training Alex, and she’s actually very impressed with his strength and fitness already – he’s running 14km/h and they’ve not even really begun yet!
At one point she gets right up him to fire him up and asks if he’s getting angry, and “What do you care? You’re only the weakest link anyway!”
The training montage ends with Alex engulfing Jillian in a massive hug, with Alex doing a voiceover saying that he was very appreciative of all Jillian did for him. But will it be enough?
Meanwhile Michelle is off doing the last chance training with the rest of the Red team. Marty’s doing it tough, screaming out loud while on the resistance bikes. At one point he’s starting to scream like a female tennis player or one of those ridiculously overacting pornstars.
Afterwards the Red team head outside for some skipping as a change of pace. Most of the contestants do okay at this, but Marty took one small jump and immediately went down, saying he got an incredible pain just above his knee.
Medics are called yet again, who basically just said there’s probably nothing really wrong with it, just swelling up a bit, so he’ll have to rest it for a couple of hours – not what you want to hear during last chance training time!
To the Blues!
Shannan is nervous about his first last chance workout… not entirely sure why, he doesn’t have to get on the scales!
But he’s impressed with Jules and Michael’s workouts, they always put in a good effort, he says.
Gerard is putting in as much effort as he can, as he’s well aware that if they lose the weigh-in, he’ll be the one his team will want to get rid of.
Bob is very impressed by how well Gerard is doing, saying that he’s right back to where he was before his little hospital stay and Bob has many encouraging words for him. Gerard is stoked, at one point throwing his hands in the air while on the treadmill, in celebration of how well he’s doing.
Prior to the weigh-in, another mini-challenge, who could row the fastest 5 kilometres, and whichever team won would get to choose which Blue team member’s result wouldn’t be counted in the weigh-in, due to Red having one fewer on their team at this point. Not sure why this went ahead, since it’s percentage based anyway, but I guess they wanted to sort of compensate Red for having a team member quit on them.
Mel steps up as the contender for the Blue team, since she actually has a rowing background. After much umm and ahh work by the Red team, Marty is put forward for the Reds, despite his leg injury.
Mel starts out slow and steady, while Marty sets out slightly faster to try and get ahead and stay there. It stays that way for most of the race, with Mel slightly lagging behind, but not losing significant ground. But as the race went on, Mel came to realise she didn’t have the stamina she used to have and she ended up having nothing in reserve for the end of the race, so all Marty had to do was continue at the same pace to win.
It turned his whole body to jelly, but he made it! So Red will be allowed to choose which Blue team member to sit out, rather than have Blue choose for them.
And now… the weighing begins!
Nervousness is very high as they’re walking in and it’s plain to see on everyone’s face that they’re both looking forward to, and dreading, getting up on the scales for the first time since they started their journey.
Ajay reiterates the rules again, telling us that the elimination vulnerable team will be the one with the lowest percentage of weight lost, not merely raw numbers.
Courtney is first to step to the scales, as he has immunity and is thus not eligible for elimination. His weight will still count towards the Red teams total.
Courtney was worried that he’d lost only 1kg or something, because he couldn’t see any difference in his face, he tells us.
Courtney: 133.5kg A loss of 5.7kg
Munnalita: 119.4kg A loss of 7.9kg
Munnalita couldn’t believe that she would lose so much.
Greg: 138.7kg A loss of 10.1kg
Greg is apparently not a quitter and is there to stay for good, as he tells the camera for his kids’ viewing. I hope they’re not too young and think he’ll be stuck in the TV forever!
At this point Damien is expressing doubts about whether his team has actually done enough to win this thing.
Marty: 150.2kg A loss of 10.4kg
“Pretty soon I’ll be able to do this – *flexes* – with muscles!” – Marty
Pati was feeling quietly confident before stepping up on the scales, as she felt she’d done a lot of exercise.
Pati: 114.9kg A loss of 5.3kg
Alex is left till last, cruelly, in my opinion! Nevertheless, the big man steps up.
But wait, first Courtney has to stick his nose in, saying that the 5kg penalty was bullshit and if it wasn’t for Alex they wouldn’t have it and OH TEAM SPORTS ARE SO UNFAIR and so on. Harden the fuck up, as faux-Chopper would say!
Alex weighs… an ad break! Right after he says he was mentally wishing the scales would hurry up and reveal his weight and put him out of his misery. What about us, huh?
Alex: 144.6kg A loss of 10.6kg
Cue Munnalita saying she didn’t expect him to lose more than the other guys and Marty saying he expected to lose more than Alex.
Alex, from the scales, extols the virtues of his Red team and thanks them a lot for helping to push him to a great result.
Then we cut back to Courtney being a bitch, again, saying that Alex doesn’t work out as hard as the rest of them and when he does, he runs out of puff so much quicker… He’s the heaviest on your team you damn idiot! He almost doubled your result despite only being 11kg heavier!
You’re going to vote him out anyway, aren’t you? Die in a fire you twit!
And now the selection of who to drop from the Blue team. After much tossing up, the Red team decides to ask Damien to step out of the official figures for the weigh-in, making him the first from the Blue team to weigh-in.
Damien: 203.2kg A loss of 13.1kg!
Munnalita raves about how smart the Red team was feeling at this point, thinking there’s no way they could lose now! Ohhh, Munnalita, does you silliness know no bounds?
41.3kg is the total Blue will need between their remaining 6 members to win the weigh-in, which seems very doable next to the Red teams -50kg, -45kg adjusted, even without Damien’s contribution. It’s only a hair over 6.8kg per contestant and even with the girls unlikely to post much more than that, the guys should manage up around 10kg with ease. Things are looking grim for Red.
Michael: 155.6kg A loss of 9.6kg
Sam has been having problems with her leg, apparently, so they were worried she wouldn’t manage much of a weightloss.
Sam: 121kg A loss of 7kg, maintaining her track record of having an exact weight!
Immediately after she weighed in, a medic entered from the back of the weigh-in room to take Sam off for treatment, with Ajay telling the contestants (and us) that Sam needed to go see the medics and that Sam would explain why afterwards, but for now the weigh-in will continue.
Next up is Gerard… DUN DUN DUNNNNNN!
As expected, there’s talk from him about his concerns that he was going to let the team down due to his hospital stay and thus might lose them the weigh-in which would probably lead to him being voted out.
Gerard: 126.1kg A loss of 7.4kg
With which Gerard was unimpressed! Crazy talk! He lost more than the heavier Courtney lost! And Gerard had days off, blacked out and is much older… Poppycock, Gerard, you did great!
Jules: 120.2kg A loss of 6.3kg
11kg with only Kelly and Mel remaining!
Kelly is up next. Courtney’s predicting doom for Red, as usual.
Kelly: 112.7kg A loss of 4.4kg
Nothing special there and it leaves 6.6kg for Mel to somehow lose. As the smallest contestant, that’s a big ask!
Meanwhile Kelly is crushed and starts crying up there on the scales. Not entirely sure why, 4.4kg is quite a good result for her and she’ll only build on that from here.
Combined total so far: 34.7kg
Marty’s talking a big game now, thinking they’re a shoe-in now that Mel needs to put up a very big number for a girl.
Mel: 100.7kg A loss of 7.7kg
Blue wins! With probably the best ever figure for such a relatively small girl being posted by Mel, they deserve to be proud of their achievement.
Red is crushed. Again. Will they learn that this is what happens when you don’t support your teammates or will they just blame it all on their biggest loser, Alex?
Yeah, I’d be betting on that second one. The alliance members saying they don’t know who’ll be leaving is particularly obnoxious – yes you do. You’ve all had it in for Alex from day one and you’re still berating him when he’s the biggest loser on your team. Get your collective hands off it!
In the preview for tomorrow night’s episode we see Jillian blowing up at someone over the decision made in the elimination room, saying “You’ve just cost someone a place in the house..” but I assume there’s more to the statement than that, we’ll see.
Also, the next challenge is previewed – towing a plane by manpower alone! With Red being down two contestants that will only leave 5 a side to pull the plane, which should be interesting.
We also see Sam “returning from hospital”, with the now familiar – and ominous – “but for how long?” If she’s not back for good that would leave Red only one man down for the challenge, rather than two.
And lastly we see another person’s hands plunging beneath the flowers of The Walk’s pedestals. This wouldn’t be a problem, except that the hands are quite clearly black. Not merely brownish, black. Like Pati’s shade of black. So unless I miss my guess, Pati’s going to win immunity somehow?
Find out tomorrow who gets eliminated. If, for some reason, you don’t quite believe it will be Alex already…
